Clover Hill pounded out 16 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of 14 walks by a trio of Bridgewater pitchers in a seven-inning shutout win Friday at Buck Bowman Park.
The Bucks also got a nearly flawless effort from lefty starter Justin Wood, who tossed six scoreless frames to pick up the win and move to 1-0.
Wood, who struck eight, walked one and allowed just one hit, was the beneficiary of the suddenly rejuvenated Bucks' bats, which had managed just a combined 11 hits — all singles — in back-to-back losses to start the season.
Drew Easter opened the bottom of the first by drawing a walk from Reds' lefty Scott Hearn. Easter then stole second and scored on a single from Christian Simmers. Addison Bowman followed with a walk, before Shane Banks slammed a Hearn offering over the left field fence for a 4-0 Clover Hill lead. One out later, Grant French doubled to right center and scored when Bridgewater shortstop Ryan McAlister made a wild throw to first on a ground ball from J.R. Rohrbough.
The Bucks added three more runs in the second, when Simmers reached on an infield single and Addison Bowman singled to center. Banks RBI single plated Simmers, with Bowman scoring when Hearn misplayed a ground ball back to the mound from Aaron Lough. French followed with a RBI groundout for a 8-0 edge.
After a scoreless third tossed by reliever Tim Kennedy, the Bucks furthered the blowout by scoring eight runs in the fourth.
The big inning included a sacrifice fly from Banks, a two-run double from Dustin Bowman and bases-loaded walks to Aaron Martin, Simmers, Addison Bowman and John Sinclair.
The 16 runs were more than enough for Wood. After a one-out walk to Daniel Batman in the top of the first, he retired the next 12 batters, until Tyler McFarland reached on an error with one out in the fifth. Wood, however, fanned Pat Shiflet and got Jason Krech to ground out to third to end the inning.
T.J. Frazier opened the sixth with a sharp single to right to break up the no-hitter, with Wood getting three more quick outs to keep the Reds off the scoreboard.
Wood was replaced by former Harrisonburg High lefty Mike Minnis, making his Bucks' debut, to start the seventh. Minnis walked one and allowed a single to McFarland, but struck out Brendan Chernay and got Krech to line softly to third top end the game, which was stopped after seven frames because of the RBCL's 10-run slaugther rule.
Banks was 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs, while Simmers went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, three runs and two walks to lead the Bucks at the plate.
Clover Hill plays at Elkton Sunday.
