Broadway scored four times in the second inning and took advantage of the Bucks' slow-starting bats to pick up a 7-4 win Sunday at Buck Bowman Park.
The Bruins (1-0) pounded out 12 hits and held Clover Hill to just four singles in the contest.
Broadway's Tyler Orndorff led off the game with a double to right, but Bucks' starter Kevin Chandler got a line drive back to the mound from Nick Barnes, a strikeout of Clint DeHaven and a pop out from cleanup hitter Jay Barnes to keep the Bruins scoreless.
After Broadway starter Daniel Hawkins worked out a pair of walks, but struck out the side, in the bottom of the first, the Bruins struck in the second.
P.J. Hinson stroked a one-out single and Brett Goodloe walked, before Chandler fanned Lee Van Lear for the second out. Following a walk to No. 9 hitter Dustin Phillips, Chanlder surrendered a grand slam to Orndorff for a 4-0 Bruins lead.
The Bucks trimmed the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second, when Grant French and Dustin Bowman walked to open the frame, and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Chris Cofer. Aaron Martin's groundout to second then plated a run for the Bucks.
Broadway added another run in the third, when Brett Howell walked with one out and later scored on a two-out single to right from Goodloe.
Chandler worked out of a two-on jam in the top of the fourth, allowing the Bucks to rally in the bottom of the inning.
Hawkins issued a one-out walk to Dustin Bowman, before Cofer's fielder's choice provided the second out. After a walk to Martin, Hawkins was relieved by Ben Hendrickson, who hit Drew Easter and walked Christian Simmers to force in one run. Hendrickson then plunked Addison Bowman to plate another run and cut the lead to 5-3. Shane Banks, however, struck out, allowing the Bruins to maintain their two-run advantage.
Clover Hill trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the sixth, when Martin singled (for the Bucks' first hit of the night), moved to third on a single from Easter and scored on a single from Simmers.
The Bruins then upped the lead to three runs in the seventh off CH reliever Chase Hutchinson, who yielded consecutive singles to DeHaven, Jay Barnes and Howell (RBI) to open the frame, followed by a run-scoring groundout from Hinson.
Clover Hill got two runners on in the eighth, on two-out walks to Easter and Simmers, but Hendrickson induced Addison Bowman to ground out to end the threat.
In the ninth, Hendrickson retired the Bucks in order, ending with a strikeout of French, to close out the victory.
Hendrickson (5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 7 K) picked up the win in relief of Hawkins (3.2 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 7 BB, 4 K ). Orndorff went 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Bruins at the plate.
Chandler (5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 5 K) took the loss. Hutchinson (3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K) and Justin Hill (1 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 2 K) pitched in relief for Clover Hill. Simmers went 1-for-1 with a RBI and four walks, while Martin was 1-for-3 with a walk, a RBI and two runs scored to pace the Bucks at the plate.
Clover Hill next faces Bridgewater (0-2) Friday at Buck Bowman.
