Thursday July 30th, 2009: Shuttleworth Park; Amsterdam, NY
The Canes and Knights would play each other on Thursday night in Amsterdam, NY. It would be a battle of Aces when Nate Novak would battle 2007 Cy-Young winner Adam Anderson. Anderson and Novak would retire both sides in order in the first inning. The Canes would get on the board in the 2nd when LeMorta and Solomon would draw back to back walks and RJ Laurin would get hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tom Morrison would single in 2 runs to give the Canes a 2-0 lead. The Canes would get another run when BJ Roberts would walk and move to third on a LeMorta single. LeMorta and Roberts would pull off a double steal to give the Canes a 3-0 lead. The Knights would get on the board in the 4th Dan Carney would walk, Joe Demarco would reach on a fielders choice. Carney would later score on a Adam Anderson single. The Canes would get that run back in the 5th when Nate Novak would start the inning off with a solo shot to left field. BJ Roberts would follow it up with a single and score on an Eric Solomon double. The Knights would threaten in the 6th when Demarco would single and Harris would walk. Anderson would ground into a fielder’s choice moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Novak would buckle down and strike out the next 2 batters to retire the side. The Canes would score 2 more runs in the sixth for some insurance when the Knights would make the move to Leo Preamiu. This would be the first time this season Preamiu would see the hill. The Canes would reach on back to back errors. O’brien would score on a Panza double and later score on a Brian Hoffman Sac Fly. Novak would go out to finish the game in the top of the 7th. Novak would K the first 2 batters and then walk Burnetter. Burnetter would move al the way to third on 2 defensive indifference steals. Burnetter would end up scoring when Novak would strike out his 3rd batter of the inning but the ball would get away and Carney would reach first. Novak would get the next batter to ground out for the “fourth” out of the inning and the win.The win would lock up first place for the Canes and a first round bye that the Canes have been waiting for after 5 season.
