Description of new programs for 2007-2008

Everybody will be practicing together on Wednesday nights.

Ice Hawks = POWHA travel team - this team will have at least 10 POWHA games (5 of them away games), the end of the year POWHA tournament (3 to 4 games) plus several additional games like last year (Bob, Capitals, anybody else we can find). This rec level team is limited to 25 people all of whom must firmly commit to traveling for the away games. There are no tryouts for the team, priority, if we have too many people wanting to play, will be given to those who have been to the POWHA tournament in the past.

Raptors = Eagles = NOWHO local game only teams - these two teams are equal in strength and you'll be assigned one of the teams after the beginning of the season. These teams will be playing 10 to 12 local games plus the NOWHO tournament (2 or 3 games). It looks like the Eagles and Raptors will have their own separate coaches for games. Again, if we can find other teams who will play us like we did last year this number of games will increase. More hockey is more better.

There's a local tournament sponsored by NOWHO in November. Quite frankly I have no idea how we'll handle the teams for that, we'll have to talk about it at the party.

In January there is a big tournament held in Windsor Ontario that some of the Ice Hawks have gone to in the past. This year there's a tournament in Chicago next weekend that some Ice Hawks are going to. If you're motivated to get people together for a tournament to play more games you can always do so.

If you're trying to decide between playing for POWHA or NOWHO or both:

1) if you want to play around 30 games of hockey - play both. But remember the team will need you showing up to the away games.

2) if traveling is a big pain and you don't want to spend that much time or money on hockey or aren't too sure of your skills - play on one of the NOWHO teams - you'll still get quite a few games to enjoy. Plus you may find that you love it so much you want to join the POWHA team next year.

3) if you'd rather just play POWHA - that's fine too

Meh... Columbus Bandits score more than Ice Hawks

Despite some really sweet saves by Goalie Tina Vrabec, the Hawks were beaten by the Bandits last night. Megan Kettrick scored the first Hawks goal in the 1st period which was folled by Karen Lingas' goal in the 2nd. The Bandits had 29 shots on goal to our 21. I'm trying to think of some clever banter to describe the game, but overall... meh. So, uh, the Bandits were a fun team to play, the refs kinda seemed out of it, Amy Loftus' truck wouldn't start after the game, Starbucks on Lee closes at 10 but Caribou Coffee on Coventry is open until 11:00, cookies are good. That is all.

Ice Hawks unable to score against Mentor

The Hawks lost 1 to zip on Saturday night against the Mentor Ice Demons. The Hawks spent so long in the Demons' zone sometimes that Goalie Tina became hypnotized by the shiny rink lights. We out skated 'em, we out shot 'em, but we still lost to 'em. Because of our inability to put the little puck into the goal, the Hawks lost. The puck bounced off the Demons' posts, it skittered sideways like a cockroach when shot, tip ins became tip outs. All in all, there were more groans of disbelief on the Hawk's bench than there were on the Soviet's bench in the 1980 Olympics. On the upside, this wasn't a league game :)

Hawks tie Bandits

Score was 4 to 4. WE'RE STILL IN FIRST PLACE IN POWHA. Wow, who saw that coming? Betsy scored 2 goals and had an assist. Eve and Megan scored the other two goals. The refs sucked out loud but the Hawks played an awesome game with Coach Jesse commenting "we did have better puck movement than usual when we were in their zone". And what is more satisfying than a good puck movement?

no goalies injured during rematch with BOB

Sure the Hawks lost 5 to 2, but Tina wasn't injured. BOB was the team we were playing when new goalie Laura got broken, therefore no breakage of current goalie - very good thing. Again, the ref sucked out loud which seems to be a recurring theme. The Hawks were short handed and tired but still played a great game.

Hot, hot, hot, stu-uffff

Ice Hawks - 4 Stingers - 1
The Ice Hawks were fast and furious last night at Ice Land. Goalie Tina had few shots taken at her as the D kept heavy pressure on the Stingers. The O totally rocked last night with 4 of the 6 players scoring goals. Maria, finally losing her hockey virginity, hit a beautiful high shot into the Stinger's goal. Everyone kept up the intensity the entire game even tho exhaustion was squashing nearly everyone by the start of the third period. In a not so astonishing turn of events, those who were so mobile on the ice yesterday are pretty immobile today. Well, at least I am. The Hawks are fired up and ready to take on Mentor on Saturday. If the Ice Hawks can generate this much energy at the tournament we're sure to kick some butt.

Betsy Plays Goal !

Stingers - 6   Ice Hawks 4
Betsy stepped up and played goal in the absence of our primary goalie Laura (who we broke in the second game of the season) and backup goalie Tina (who was out of town with a small human glued to her). Betsy did a great job, catching several pucks in the air. Sadly, the Stingers won but the Hawks put up an awesome fight with lots of shots on goal but sadly the going into the goal part, not so much.

Hawks lose to BOB

The Ice Hawks played a great game against BOB Ohio on Saturday night. The teams were closely matched in skill level and the Hawks really hustled. Big bummer of the game was that Goalie Laura injured her knee. Tina put on Laura's pads and did a great job as replacement goalie. Big kudos to the Defense who made a great effort to keep the puck away from Tina. Shout out to Betsy who made her offensive debut as a wing and did a great job. Laura says the doctor told her that either she badly sprained her knee or tore some ligaments. She's on crutches, has to stay off the knee for a few days and has an orthopedist appointment this week. Knees, so important for movement yet not designed all that well.

Ice Hawks vs Fangs - coach's comments

Ice Hawks vs. Dayton Fangs at Cleveland Heights

The first game of the season will be on Saturday, September 23 at 8:30 P.M. The Ice Hawks are hoping to come out strong this season, their roster strengthened by the addition of new players. While the Ice Hawks' original goal for this season was to be mediocre by '07, they are now cautiously optimistic that they may end up a kinda decent hockey team.

Go Hawks!

Ice Hawks Beat Fangs! Much Rejoicing

In their first game of the season the Ice Hawks beat the Dayton Fangs 1 to 0. The lone goal was scored by new defenseman Amy Loftus. This win puts the team ahead of their last year's total wins and signals the emergence of a new, invigorated and shooting hockey team. Go Hawks!
