Zach Miller Takes top honors at Rush Lake

BY Zach Miller

Rush City MN. I planned on fish still being shallow for the spawn and my game plan was to fish shallow all day. We started and I ran to my first spot and there was nobody around, which is a great thing to see if you think you know where the fish are.

After 2 hours of fishing my #1 spot and no fish in the live well I started to second guess my plan however, I was seeing fish shallow and some of the fish were over 3 lbs. I started to notice, that the fish were not only shallow but still on their beds. Due to the heavy cover around the beds and the bass’s unwillingness to chase lures or hit top water I was having a difficult time catching these fish and deciding upon a good technique. In addition, the beds were very spread out so fan casting my 4” Lake Fork Ring Worm (normal spawning bass lure) was not an efficient option.

While standing on the front of the BassCat trying to plan my attack I noticed a fish spook off a bed. I slowly drifted by the bed and noticed the fish still hanging close by in the weeds; the fish was not going any farther away as my boat drifted overhead. After I drifted 20 feet away from the bed I threw the ring worm back on that bed. Sure enough the bass was back and ready to eat.

I caught my first 3 pounder 3 hours into the day and I was onto them. For the remainder of the day I ran my trolling motor around the shallows spooking fish and marking there spots. Then I would return later and catch these fish off there beds.

Throughout the day I caught 18 keepers and I was able to upgrade. With 1.5 hours remaining, 5 fish and roughly 11 pounds in the live well I stuck a huge fish. The fish was able to drag me and my 6lb test fluorocarbon around my boat for 5 minutes. After I landed the fish it measured 21 inches long and I knew it was the kicker fish I needed to close the deal.
