1985 Pioneers are 1st playoff team
The 1985 Pioneers became the first team in school history to make the MHSAA playoffs. They finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and a JPC championship. They scored 281 points and allowed just 34. The Pioneers were defeated by Traverse City St. Francis 27-7 in blizzard conditions which dropped 15 inches of snow to the ground. Members of the team were Eddie Hubel, Ben Ripley, Ron Johnston, John Punches, Rob Blackmore, Brad Lynch, Craig Leis, Kirk DesJardins, Clay Oldt, James Dunlop, Loren Cole, Jack Hofweber, Eric Simon, Jamie Hurst, Mike Bay, Scott Moore, Chris Tracy, Adam Bosek, Don Johnston, Chris Squires, Chris Grossnickle, Lee Woody, Rick Urquhart, Bruce Garchow, Ralph Hamilton, Steve Haring, Cliff Wellman, and Ben Douman. Coaches were Greg McMillan, head coach and Kelly Luplow, asst. coach. Trainer was Kap Paesens. 1951 Pioneers Finish With 5-1-2 record The Pioneers were rated 5th in the area. They tied the area champions (St.Louis) 19-19. Members of the team were: Nyle Haggart, Jack Gibis, Bill Seiter, Andy Irwin, Dick Woodworth, Ray Lucy, Rich Smith, Walt Wilson, Floyd Longstreth, Mike Dwyer, Blair Seiter, A.J. Doherty, Mark Krienke, Dick Nivison, Hal Irwin, Bill Ulrich, Irwin Ruby, Jay Kinsey, George Pulcifer, Dick Graham, Jim Bader, and Ted Hoersch. Coaches were Bill Seitz and Don Richardson. Quarterback, Rich Smith, was named MVP by his teammates and halfback, Dick Woodworth, was elected honorary captain and received a football with his name inscribed on it. 1952 Pioneers Win 14 Consecutive Games After winning 14 straight games, the "52" Pioneers lost to Gladwin on the final play of the game in the last game of the season. In their 14th win against Houghton Lake, George Graham returned an interception 102 yards for a touchdown. Members of this outstanding Clare team were: Nyle Haggart, Fred Haggart, Ted Hoersch, Jim Chandanais, Philip VanEvery, Mike Dwyer, Jim Bader, George Graham, Jim Mayer, Joe Humphrey, Kyle Hanley, Bill Ulrich, Irv Ruby, George Pulcifer, Glen Hales, Dick Garthe, Ken McConnell, Jim Duncan, Bob Seiter, Norris Bay, Oscar Rulapaugh, Dick Fancon, Mark Ruark. Pioneer 54 Grid Team Called "Great" This was the headlines of the Clare Sentinel after the Pioneers claimed a co-championship in their first year in the Mid-Michigan B Conference. They were rated 3rd in the Saginaw News All Area rankings. The starting lineup was Center Fancon, Guards Hanley and Armentrout, Tackles Garthe and Fred Haggart, ends Miller and Robinette, and backs Brown, Rulapaugh, Humphrey, and Kinsey. Their average weight was 182 pounds (in uniform) according to the article. The defensive side of the ball averaged 196 pounds and held their opponents to only 19 points on the year. They scored 117 points. Other players on the team besides those mentioned were: Joe Crawford, Ed White, Tom VanHoose, Elvis Denton, Pat Pudvay, Chuck Ruby, Larry Seiter, Charley Zeiter, Jay Lehr, Gerald Armentrout, Chris Smith, Bill Siel, Joe Humphrey, and Bob Murdoch. Coaches were George Perry and Don Richardson and the manager was Ronald Dull. Wonder who the queen candidates and the court were in "54"? The attendants were: Marilyn Brown 9th grade, Lois Pudvay 10th grade, and Phylis Bolin 11th grade. The candidates were: Nancy Randall, Bonnie Stanley, and Gloria Milholin. 1955 team "lightweight, but fast and scrappy" This was the first sentence previewing the Pioneers in the Clare Sentinel in the fall of 1955. Graduating 18 off last years conference champions but returning a speedy pair of "pony" halfbacks (Larry Seiter and Chuck Ruby) and a transfer from Ohio (Keith Merrillat). Others returning are Clark Kinsey, Nard Robinette, Larry Pulcifer, Jim Dwyer. Dick Beery at end, Carlyle Garthe at tackle, Jim Nivison at center all fill in from last years JV team. Single game tickets are $.60 for adults and $.30 for students. All-American Nard Robinette playing for Colorado A&M Frosh. Nard Robinette, 1956 graduate of Clare High School, who was the first, and only, football player to named as an All-American is doing an outstanding job representing his hometown and state on the Colorado A&M Freshman football team. Nard had 3 touchdowns in their game against Colorado University, which the Rams won 31-7. The following was what a couple of the Colorado Newspapers had to say about the game: FORT COLLIINS COLORADOAN: "Robinette, a Clare Michigan product gave indication of developing into an outstanding receiver." DENVER POST: "End, Nard Robinette of Clare, Michigan, who caught both of Bolman's pay off tosses and who recovered a fumbled punt in the C.U. end zone for another touchdown, must have thought it was an early Christmas." Nov. 29, 1956 1957 Pioneers Conference Champions The 1957 Clare Pioneers won the Mid-Michigan B Conference Championship with 4 wins and 1 loss and finished the season 6-1 overall. In the Pioneers seven scheduled games they scored 152 points and gave up 75. They averaged 234 yards rushing per game. They were 22 of 66 passing for 406 yards. Tom Garver and Dick Roe accounted for 1088 of the total yards gained on the ground. Garver, who broke his leg in the Shepherd game, gained 464 yards in five games. Roe finished out the year with 624 yards in seven games. Other seniors on this championship team were: Jack Smith, Lou Bolle, Dan McNerney, John Miller, Craig Jackson, Larry Gillis, Eddie Mayer, Ron Drake, Pat Crawford, and Richard Davenport. Returning for the 58 season were: Deb Nolan, Bill Merrilat, John Zinser, Bill Zinser, J.J. Seiter, Rex Robinette, Lanny Haring, Gerry Lloyd, and Vern Hart. Dick Roe Selected to the 1957 Saginaw News All Area Team In what was labeled one of the best area talent in years, the Saginaw News selected Dick Roe, halfback, to their All-Area Class B football team. As stated in the article, "Roe, a light-stepping broken field wizard" is teamed with Hank Pety of Mt. Pleasant and Ithaca's Jack McWilliams. Jim Sternberg of Bad Axe was selected as the QB. Four others were given mention on the team. They were: Pat Crawford-second team end, and honorable mentions Lou Bolle-guard, Larry Gillis-center, and Deb Nolan-quarterback. On the Class C-D team was Harrison center Frank Sprague. Coaches praised the 235 pound Sprague calling him "just about the whole Harrison team". 1970 Pioneers Close with 6-3 record The 1970 Pioneers closed out their season with a 35-6 win over Bay City All Saints. Senior, Bernie McNerney, closed out his career with 4 of the five touchdowns scored. Junior tailback, Al West, rushed for 176 yards. The defense was led by Dan Manee, Bob Ridderman, and Al Montney. Members of the "70" team were: Seniors: Marty Schlafley, Arlie Schepperley, Bernie McNerney, Mike Gallagher, Bob Ridderman, Dan Manee, Russ West, Jeff Smith, Greg Gibson, and Dan Campbell. Juniors: Al West, Doug Lake, Dave Schepperley, Roger Shafer, Sam Smith, Greg Kelley, Mark Lodes, Kip Wood, Ken Sheredy, Rich Rodgers, Bob Lozen, Bob Love, Greg Murphy, Steve Dysinger, Mark Murton, Dave Smith, Dan Guiette, Tim Lapham, Al Montney, Greg Witbeck, Chuck Stuckert, Mark Sheredy, Bruce Hales, Randy Burns, and Doug Carey.
