INFERNO Brings Home the Silver!!
On Sunday, the 6th of May, CJVA 16 Red INFERNO took a trip up to Downstate Athletic Center in Peekskill, New York for the 16 Club #3 Regional Championships. The team took the court against Performance 16 White and came off a slow start of 1-8 to rally back and steal the set 25-23. The second set went point for point and switched leads three times until Inferno took the second set 25-22. Second in pool play was Downstate’s highly ranked 16 Red Squad. Downstate started off tough and held a five-point lead midway through the match until Inferno fought back. With the first set on the line at 23-19 Inferno, Downstate managed to capitalize off serve reception errors and forced our defense to spread thin. Downstate beat Inferno 25-23 giving Downstate 16 red some breathing room. Rather than backing down from a challenge Inferno lit up the court the second set going on a 15-1 run against Downstate lighting them up and beating them down 25-12. The final set with Downstate on edge, Inferno came out strong once more to a 12-4 lead and managed to seal the victory at 15-7. The third match came against NYC Juniors; Inferno had problems terminating the ball and with a clean and powerful NYC team taking both sets 25-16, 25-16, 16 Inferno edged out of pool play in second place by 0.002% in points/set. The first round of play-offs 16 Red Inferno played Impact 16-1. The girls battled back and forth point-for-point until Inferno stole the first set 25-22. The second set Impact 16-1 lead by two points until 15-17, when Inferno sided-out and took the set 25-20. The Semi-final match proved to be a test to Inferno’s mental toughness and ability to take down a much larger opponent. The NYC Starlings were the top-ranked team at the tournament coming in a full 10 places higher than 16 Red Inferno. They were also the only undefeated team the entire day losing only one set to a tough Essex 16 White team in the playoffs. Inferno took out NYC Starlings 25-19, 25-18. In the finals Inferno faced-off against the #1 team from their own pool: NYC Juniors. NYC Juniors had just been too strong for a 16 Inferno team. Serve reception errors and inability to terminate against a tough NYC team ended up being the cause for the loss in two straight sets. 16 Red Inferno came into the tournament at the overall 11th-ranked team and managed to take silver at a tough GEVA competition. Congratulations to: Becca Hill, Angela Aceti, Erin Ciarocca, Auburn Donurama, Rita Fang, Devin Russo, Jenn Kozyra, Lauren Besecker, Kim Schupner, Paige Smith & Rachel Mahalow for a great showing.
14 Black Venom Bound for Nationals!!!
The 14 Black Venom secured an American Division bid to the USA Volleyball Junior National Championship in Columbus, Ohio and took home a third place trophy in last weekend's GEVA Regional Championship. It all played out during a very long day at Downstate Athletic Center in Peekskill, NY on Saturday, April 28th. Venom took first place in pool play, starting strong against Central Jersey Heat and beating them in two straight (25-18, 25-19). Next they battled AVVC, but lost in the tie breaker (20-25, 25-20, 5-15). In their third contest, Venom came up with a big win against Downstate Red, taking them down in two (25-19, 25-23), and securing their playoff spot. In the first round of double elimination playoffs, Venom squared off against 7th ranked Aviator Black and won in two straight (25-20, 25-20). Sporttime proved a tougher match, and Venom dropped their first set 19-25, but rallied back and took the second game and tiebreaker (25-19, 15-6) to advance. Still undefeated in double elimination play, Venom finally went head-to-head with the 2nd ranked Hurricanes - a team they had not played all season. Both teams were awesome, with Venom taking the first set 25-22. The Hurricanes rallied back and delivered Venom's first loss of the playoffs, taking game two and the tiebreaker (22-25, 10-15). The Venom's last game of the day (well, night at this point) was against 1st ranked Downstate Black. The girls played tough into their eleventh hour of competition and won the first game (25-18), were narrowly defeated (23-25) in the second, but fell in the tie breaker (11-15), netting them third place overall in the GEVA Regional Championship. Congratulations to our CJVA 14 Black Venom team of Mackenzie Bruzzio, Sarah Jennison, Meagan Kern, Sophie Kerschner, Claire McGuire, Victoria Muttin, Lauren Novotny, Maria Pansari (awarded All-Tournament Team), Katie Weger, and Jordan Williams for their exceptional performance and best of luck at the Junior National Championship this summer!
