The C&H TIDES land in 3rd place on the '09 Thanksgiving Shootout NIT in Mesa, AZ

Tournament Day One

The C&H Tides opened the tournament with a tough loss to the Halos 8-0. The loss did not discourage the players as they regrouped for the second game. They found themselves behind against Team Sol 4-0 early but the Tides showed their resiliency by tying it at 4 in the bottom of the 5th. Team Sol went ahead and posted a three spot and took the lead again 7-4 in the top half of the 6th. The Tides turned around and scored four runs themselves to take the lead and complete the win 8-7 with a bases loaded walk. So after the first day of the Tournament the Tides were 1-1.

Tournamnt Day Two

On Saturday, the Tides defeated the Chandler D-Backs and were put in the "win and you’re in... lose and you are out" situation against the AZ Cobras. They pulled out a victory 8-7 though the Cobras, with a late surge, tied it at seven in the top of the 7th. The Tides pulled out the win again with a walk off sacrifice fly. The C&H Tides cut it close a few times but ended the four game round robin with 3-1 record earning a playoff game on Sunday. Not bad for players who had just met for the first time the day before and; therefore, had never played together.

Tournament Day Three

With a 3-1 record the Tides were ranked 5th and landed a 9am start against the 4th ranked Chargers in single elimination play on Sunday. The Tides jumped out to an early lead and held on to take out the Chargers 7-2.

Riding a four game winning streak, the Tides were poised to face the number one seeded Halos, who had posted a 4-0 start.  After the Halos had gotten a seven runs early, the Tides put up a seven run inning of their own. They did this against a Halos team who had merely allowed only 3 total runs throughout the four game round robin. The undefeated Halos were able to out slug the Tides and C&H lost 14-7. The Halos went on to win the tournament by remaining undefeated.

In the end, the Tides had a successful tournament by finishing third overall in a field of 15 teams. So, after six games in sunny Mesa, Arizona, the Tides flew out with 4-2 record and suffering both losses at the hands of the Halos. The Halos are a local team compiled of players from Desert Ridge High in Mesa, AZ. The Desert Ridge Jaguars are a powerhouse and posted a 25-5-1 record and won the State Championship in the 5AII Division in the spring of ‘09. This is the highest Division of athletic competition in the State of Arizona.

Now the C&H Tides look to take that momentum toward to their next tournament with a goal to improve on their Arizona tournament finish. They will indeed strive to achieve their goal.
