SOME BASIC INFO FOR 9TH GRADE PLAYERS & PARENTS
1. THE SEASON......begins on about February 23rd with conditioning for all players and work with Pitchers & Catchers. We like to use this time to get our player's arms and legs in shape and to evaluate and train our pitchers and our catchers.
Cuts will be made sometime the week of March 9th. We generally keep between 14 to 16 players.

2. EQUIPMENT....each player should come to practice with a glove and proper clothing. This means athletic shorts, sweats or baseball pants, gym shoes and a baseball cap. Players should wear a cup, and catchers should bring their own equipment(if they have it). Players do not need to buy their own bat, but should bring one if they have one available; even if it is a couple of years old.

3. PRACTICES....until the weather clears, we will practice inside. However, when we can go outside, we will. If the weather is dry and above 40, we may go outside...so players should be prepared with cool weather and warm weather clothing. We try to let players know whether we will go inside or outside by the day before.

4. PRACTICE TIMES....We would love to have a set practice time right after school. However, when we begin practicing in February, both girls and boys basketball are still playing and practicing and we must work around their schedule. Plus we compete for gym time with softball, track, the band, the play, volleyball and cheerleading. Quite often, this means a fluctuating schedule, and it means a late schedule

We try to practice 6 days per week, but may practice less due to gym availability. The LATEST time that I generally set for Freshmen is from 8:30 to 10:00 PM.

5.   PRACTICE ATTENDANCE....is mandatory. Prior to cuts being made, an unexcused absence can affect your ability to make the team. After cuts have been made, an unexcused absences can result in punishment, suspension or removal from the team. There are understandable absences (illness, family emergencies, make-up tests due to illness, attending Winter sports practices, school award ceremonies, etc.) If your son needs a physical to play baseball, please do that BEFORE the season so he doesn't miss practice.

Missing practice to take driving classes or a driving test, going to a UD game or other sporting event, going on vacation, or missing because of detention are not excused absences. Further, choosing to take part in other activities (in-season intramurals, play, a school club, etc.)ARE NOT excused absences.

If this policy seems harsh, please understand that we sometimes have more than 30 players trying out for 15 spots. It isn't fair to a player who comes to EVERY practice to have a player who has missed several practices take a spot ahead of him. Also, it is important to us to know that a player is very committed to our team and will be able to put it ahead of other activities for a couple of months. While I don't believe baseball is more important than any other activity, it is a TEAM sport and we need our players to dedicate themselves to their teammates; this means learning everything they can, improving themselves, and becoming a part of the team.

6.   UNIFORMS....Players will need to purchase a red mock turtleneck, a Carroll Baseball hat, a red baseball belt, and red socks. The mock turtlenecks should be available at the Carroll bookstore. The belts and socks can be found at any sporting good store. Hats will NOT be sold through the bookstore, so that we can keep them as CARROLL BASEBALL HATS ONLY. We want all of our players to have primarily BLACK baseball spikes. If your freshman player already has shoes of another color, you don't have to purchase new shoes, but please be prepared to have black shoes for upcoming seasons.

7.   DRESS/BEHAVIOR...No earrings or jewelry are allowed during games, so all earrings and jewelry needs to be removed before practices also. Unless you are a catcher, baseball hats are to be worn with the bills facing forward. We wear our hats with the bills curved, as the hats are made; They are not to be flattened. All coaches, teachers, umpires and other adults are to be addressed respectfully. No facial hair is allowed and hair needs to be short and neatly trimmed.

8.   OTHER SPORTS....I'm a firm believer that high school athletes should play as many sports as they want to play. While it is certainly the right of every athlete and his parents to make joint decisions about what sports they will and won't play, please don't ever let a coach tell you to give up other sports and limit yourself to just one. If you enjoy participating in more than one sport, please do!

9.   SUMMER BASEBALL....We love to have our Freshmen play on our Summer Baseball team. The summer season is a great time to improve your skills, get more experience and gain playing time. Our summer team will play 20 to 25 games, plus a tournament or two. Coach Sheets and his staff come to a lot of the summer games; it's a great chance to see the younger players. If you don't play summer ball at all, or play somewhere else, it will be impossible for us to see you or work with you. We don't require anyone to play for Carroll, but we certainly suggest it.

While the above rules and policies may seem strict, please understand that I am easy to talk to and my coaches and I are always ready to sit down privately with our players to discuss whatever they might need to talk about, baseball related or not.

GOOD LUCK AND WE'LL SEE YOU IN THE SPRING

HERE ARE SOME CARROLL BASEBALL RULES THAT ARE GOOD TO LEARN EARLY:

1. Always be early.
2. Be at every practice and game.
3. When a coach/adult/teacher is talking, all players must stop talking.
4. Hustle. NEVER walk during a game or practice.
5. Our batting cages are for WORK only. You can laugh and enjoy yourself, but when you are in the cage, you are there to hone your skills. Goofing off in the batting cage will cause everyone to run GREAT DISTANCES!
6. Come properly equipped. Be prepared for inside/outside practices and bring appropriate warm clothing for outside. If you don't have LONG SLEEVES or a sweatshirt, and long pants when we go outside in 40 degree weather, you won't be allowed to practice.
7. Wear a hat.
8. Put your name on your glove. It's a valuable piece of leather.
9. Don't be the first to leave; clean up the field/gym first, then you can go.
10. No one is bigger than the team. The best player's job is to lead by example, and the worst player's job is to work so hard that he "pushes" everyone ahead of him to be better.
11. All players will be treated fairly.
