Thursday, October 25Staph Infections
Dear Members:
Please see the below information regarding staph infections among young adults and in particular, among athletes. Pay close attention to items five and eight that discuss the need to keep equipment dry and clean. It's very important for players to open their bags and dry each piece of equipment after a practice or a game instead of leaving the equipment bag in the garage wet. Please stress to your players the importance of drying their equipment and breaking old habits of just putting the bag away full of wet gear. Also, shower shoes or some type of foot protection should be worn in the locker rooms and when taking showers at the rinks. A very common way for this infection to spread is via cuts on the bottom of the feet. Avoiding direct contact with the floor is one way to avoid transmitting the infection.
Please take the time to read this letter and to go over it with your children. Thank you.
MRSA infections are staphylococcal (staph) infections that do not respond to the more commonly used antibiotics. Staph is bacteria, which are commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. They are one of the most common causes of skin infections in the United States, most of which are minor. Staph bacteria, including MRSA, can cause skin infections that may look like a pimple or boil and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage. Staph infections are transmitted most frequently by direct skin-to-skin contact.
Practicing good hygiene is the best means of prevention or catching MRSA staph, cold, strep, and other contagious infections. Steps that each student athlete should take include:
1. Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
2. Keeping cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed.
3. Avoiding contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
4. Avoiding the sharing of personal equipment (i.e. chin straps, shin pads, or any other athletic equipment).
5. Using a disinfectant to keep all personal equipment clean and dry after every use.
6. Avoiding the sharing of personal items such as towels, bed linens, clothes, soap or razors.
7. Using a barrier (i.e. clothing or a towel) between your bare skin and shared equipment found in gyms and exercise rooms.
8. Wiping surfaces of equipment before and after use.
Parents should assess skin regularly for any lesions, and notify your health care provider for any suspicious wounds.

The Chesapeake Bay Chiefs are very pleased and excited to announce Craig Laughlin as the Pee Wee Travel Team Head Coach for the 2007-08 season!!
Craig was a talented right-winger who played over 500 NHL games in the 1980s. The Toronto native was chosen 162nd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1977 after a solid freshman year at Clarkson College. He returned to play his last three years with the school where his jersey #22 is now retired. He then scored 32 goals for the AHL's Nova Scotia Voyageurs in 1980-81. He split the next season between the Vees and the Habs but was traded to Washington along with Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, and Doug Jarvis. Laughlin's strong two-way play and productive work on the power play contributed to the Caps' emergence as solid NHL club in the '80s. He topped the 20-goal mark three times and often worked on the same line with Bob Carpenter and Alan Haworth. Laughlin tallied 110 goals while wearing a Capitals sweater. Overall, he scored 136 goals and 341 points with the Canadians, Capitals and Los Angeles Kings before finishing up his hockey career with Landshut in the German League.
Craig has been the television color analyst for Washington Capitals telecasts on Comcast SportsNet since 1990, where he currently is paired with Joe Beninati. He also participates in many Capitals Alumni activities and is involved in charity work in the Washington, DC area. He also owns and operates the Network Hockey Development Program where he coaches and helps aspiring hockey players to develop their skills and advance their careers in hockey.
The Chiefs welcome Craig back to Chesapeake and look forward not only to a great season, but his continued relationship with our Club!

Letter from the club president
A Letter from the Club President
Dear Players and Parents,
The Chesapeake Bay Chiefs organization wants to thank you for another year of supporting kids who love the sport of hockey. Through the good and bad shifts, wins and losses, it’s dedicated and loving families that make each season possible -- not only by paying the bills for hockey fees, getting your kids to practices and games, but by cheering, encouraging and praising your sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters. We hope you have enjoyed watching your children play this great game this past season.Though the 2006-07 season has just come to an end, it’s time to begin planning for next season.
We had a successful year this past year. Two of our six travel teams qualified for the CBHL playoffs and one of our teams was crowned CBHL playoff champs! In addition, all of our other teams were very competitive and had winning seasons. Several of those teams just missed the playoffs by a point or two. Our teams were also successful outside of the CBHL. Our teams brought home banners and many championship or runner-up trophies were added to our trophy cases at Piney! We are all proud of our players for their achievements.
As part of a group of volunteers, we have worked hard to provide you and your children with the best experience possible both on and off the ice and along with that have tried to maintain our fees at an affordable level. One of our goals for this season was to attract younger players to our club to continue to grow and promote this sport in our local area. One way we did this was to lower the costs drastically ($700) for Mites and Squirts in order to make it more affordable for the players just starting out. Our fees for Mites and Squirts at the travel level are the lowest in the area and we hope to attract and retain these young and future stars. Our fees for the older age groups were increased just slightly ($25) to account for the CBHL Jamboree and the increase in ice time cost. We’ve increased our on-ice practice slots to a full one-hour and have included full ice practices for every team (running about every third practice). In addition, our Coaching Director, Mark Krushat embarked on an objective to recruit and select independent and talented coaches. I believe he has achieved that goal as we look forward to another year with an outstanding group of stronger and qualified coaches.
The club is nothing without the dedication and commitment of its players, coaches, and especially - - its families. I encourage you to stay involved with the club and volunteer to help wherever you can. Even if it’s running the clock one game, opening the penalty box door, collecting quarters for goals, or becoming a Team Manager. Your help is needed and welcomed! In addition, you may want to volunteer to be on one of our committees to help with fundraisers and various events throughout the year. We need your help to continue to make this club stronger and we need your ideas throughout the year.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing you all at the rink and to a great 2007-08 season! GO CHIEFS!
