Lady Chiefs End Season With Tough 1-0 Loss!

The Lady Chiefs, looking to avenge their earlier 2-1 Coaches Tournament loss to Clearview, again found themselves on the losing end of stick, falling to the Lady Pioneers 1-0 in an opening South Jersey Group 4 Tournament matchup.  The game was very tight with no room for error, but it was Clearview who capitalized on their one golden chance after drawing a penalty kick when one of their players was taken down inside the 18-yard line.  The Lady Chiefs kept on driving to the goal and never gave up, but the Lady Pioneers defense held strong and preserved their victory.  Cherokee finishes their season with an 8-8-1 record and bids farewell and much luck to their 13 senior players:  Amanda Addezzio, Bridgette Bartkowski, Ashley Graham, Tori Hunt, Kim Lane, Steph Litty, Becca Melvin, Chelsea McKenna, Bobbi Salter, Emily Schnepper, Rae Stengel, Susie Trezza and Chelsea Walker.  Please click on the underlined headline above for a link to game photos from the Courier Post online.

NJSIAA Group 4 South Brackets Posted

The Lady Chiefs have again qualified for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament. Sixteen teams from all over South Jersey will be competing in single-elimination games for the right to be named South Group 4 Sectional Champion and move on to compete against the North I, North II and Central Group 4 Sectional Champions in the State Public Championships.  The Lady Chiefs, ranked #13, have been placed in the so-called "Group of Death" along with fellow Olympic Conference foes Washington Township and 2-time Group 4 State Champion Lenape.  Cherokee is scheduled to play #4 ranked Clearview on Monday, November 2 which will be a rematch of their 1st round Coaches Tournament game two weeks ago.  Hopefully the Lady Chiefs will have Lady Luck on their side and they can avenge that earlier 2-1 loss!  Incidently, the Cherokee Boys Varsity team will be taking on the #1 ranked Clearview boys team at the same time and place...hopefully both teams will have cause for celebration on Monday.  LET'S GO CHIEFS!

Lady Chiefs Edge Haddon Township 1-0!

The Lady Chiefs traveled to the Recchino Field Complex to take on the Lady Hawks from Haddon Township in a non-league game.  While some of the players may have been happy at first to see the small size of the turf field (less running after playing a double overtime game the night before perhaps?!), they soon realized that the shorter field didn't play to their possession and passing strengths.  There was no shortage of end to end action in the game, especially with the possibility of every 6 kick making it way into the attacking end of the field!  Each team had their share of opportunities, but each keeper was up to the task at hand.  Coach Clapperton decided to mix things up for a bit and moved senior defender Kim Lane up to the midfield.  The move paid off as Lane one-timed a shot past Haddon Township's keeper off a nicely placed corner kick by senior midfielder Chelsea Walker with about 10 minutes left in the 1st half.  The Lady Chiefs played great defense throughout the second half, while still getting opportunities on net, but the Hawks' keeper was up to the task. Cherokee keepers Tori Hunt and Gina McCool were credited with 6 saves and the shutout.  Next up is a rematch with Clearview in a first round South Jersey Group 4 Tournament game on Monday afternoon.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Lady Chiefs Nip Camden Catholic in OT!

Cherokee took on a feisty Camden Catholic team on Thursday night at home.  Celebrating both Senior Night and Marlton Recreation Soccer Night, the Lady Chiefs didn't want to disappoint their fans.  While Cherokee dominated possession and shots on goal, the ball just couldn't find its way into the back of the net due to strong play by Camden Catholic's keeper.  The first half ended with a score of 0-0.  The second half found the Lady Chiefs still dominating in SOG, but it was the Lady Irish who found the back of the net midway through the half.  Cherokee didn't give up even as Catholic started packing in the defense, and their patience was rewarded as senior midfielder Ashley Graham rifled a shot into the net with a little over 8 minutes to play.  Try as they might, the Lady Chiefs could not get the ball past Catholic's keeper and regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.  With the fans urging Cherokee on (perhaps so they could get home to watch the Phillies play?!) and the mist rolling onto the field, the Lady Chiefs kept hustling, slipping and shooting until sophomore forward Emily Martinelli finally was able to squeeze one through with about a minute and a half left in the second overtime!  Next up on Friday is Haddon Township away.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Photos From Game at Eastern are Up!

Please join me in thanking both John and Sandy Trezza for all of their time and effort in taking, editing and putting all of these game photographs on a zip drive so that I can upload them to our picture website.  In lieu of Susie's season-ending injury I know it's been extremely difficult for them to come to games, let alone take and edit hundreds of photos.  Thank you both so very much!  Please click on the underlined headline above for a link to our photo site.

Minutemaids Exact Revenge on Lady Chiefs!

The Lady Chiefs were hoping to go 2-0 against Washington Township on the season, but the Minutemaids had other plans.  Cherokee Senior midfielder Rae Stengel scored in the 4th minute of the opening half, but Township got the equalizer 6 minutes later.  The Lady Chiefs were issued a red card midway through the first half which left them a player down for the remainder of the game.  The Minutemaids scored the eventual game-winner with 7 minutes left in the first half, but the Lady Chiefs didn't back down. Even with 10 players on the field, Cherokee continued battling and making runs in the second half with 17 shots on goal during the game.  Unfortunately, Township's goal keeper was up to the task and the game ended 2-1 in favor of the Minutemaids.  Three games scheduled for next week:  Tuesday at Seneca, Thursday at home vs Camden Catholic, and Friday at Haddon Township.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Wednesday, October 21
Lady Chiefs Rout Winslow Township!

The Lady Chiefs, still smarting from last year's 2-0 loss to Winslow, put their noses to the grindstone and defeated the Lady Eagles 7-0 on Monday afternoon.  Senior defender Steph Litty started the spree with a goal in the 4th minute of action.  Litty notched her second goal of the game a few minutes later and the rout was on.  Senior midfielder Chelsea Walker, senior forward Becca Melvin, and sophomore midfielder Kim Nale also tallied goals to extend the lead to 5 at the end of the first half.  The second half saw a little more action than the goals scored by senior midfielder Chelsea McKenna and sophomore forward Vickie Nong...senior defender Bobbi Salter was physically attacked by 2 Winslow players!  Apparently one of the Winslow players was angered that Bobbi stole the ball from her earlier in the game and there was quite a bit of back and forth jostling going around!  The Winslow player finally lost her cool and attacked Bobbi, and before anyone realized it another Winslow player had joined in.  The 3 players involved were removed from the game by the refs and play continued on.  The Lady Chiefs remained calm, cool and collected and finished off with the 7-0 victory.  The refs agreed that Bobbi had only tried to defend herself, which thankfully will make her available for Wednesday's game against Washington Township!  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Lady Chiefs Lose in Sloppy Coaches Tournament Opener!

CoachesTourney_09
The Lady Chief's opening round game of the South Jersey Coaches Association Tournament had to be played in some inclement conditions on Friday.  The 2 teams fought it out in a rainy, sloppy battle that unfortunately ended 2-1 in favor of the Clearview Lady Pioneers.  Cherokee scored early off a goal by senior striker Bridgette Bartkowski after some post-corner kick scrambling in front of the net.  After much back and forth action Clearview got the equalizer, sending the game into halftime tied at 1-1.  The second half saw plenty of great defense along with missed opportunities on offense as the wind and rain picked up.  The Lady Chiefs dominated play for long periods of the half, but it was Clearview who finally struck the game-winner late in the game.  To their credit Cherokee never gave up, but the Lady Chiefs will need to find a way to get those balls in the net where they belong!  Next up are home games on Monday against Winslow and Wednesday against Washington Township.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Lady Chiefs Invited to Coaches Tournament

The South Jersey Coaches Association annually sponsors the prestigious Coaches Tournament, in which the top 16 Boys and Girls teams are selected based on weekly polls voted on by a committee of member coaches and area newspaper reporters.  The girls' voters gave the Lady Chiefs a No. 9 seed despite their Oct. 10 cutoff record of 4-5-1.  The voters no doubt saw that Cherokee had defeated No. 4 seed Washington Township, tied No. 7 seed Shawnee, and suffered all of its losses to teams seeded higher.  The Lady Chiefs are scheduled to play No. 8 seed Clearview on Friday, Oct. 16, 2:00pm at Clearview.  Here's hoping the weather holds up as the Lady Chiefs look to improve on last year's semi-finalist finish.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Saturday, October 17
Lady Chiefs Victorious Over Cherry Hill East!

The Lady Chiefs again proved victorious in their Olympic American Conference rematch with the Cougars of Cherry Hill East.  Sophomore striker Emily Martinelli struck early in the 1st half giving Cherokee the early 1-0 lead.  East fought back and scored the equalizer late in the half after a scrum in front of the net.  Senior striker Bridgette Bartkowski notched the game winner 4 minutes into the second half on a cross by midfielder Chelsea Walker.  Cherokee's lead would hold up through the remainder of the game, and the Lady Chiefs were able to scramble off to the Student Council Volleyball Tournament with their heads held high!

Lady Chiefs Edged by Lady Vikings 1-0!

The Lady Chiefs traveled to Eastern High School on Thursday to take on the Lady Vikings, hoping to avenge their 2-0 home loss back on September 16.  While Cherokee appeared to have the better of the play in early first-half action, it was the Lady Vikings who got on the scoreboard with a tap-in off a nicely placed corner kick with 15 minutes left on the clock.  The Lady Chiefs came out with all cylinders firing in the second half, but Eastern was up to the task, thwarting Cherokee's attempts for the equalizer.  Play got a little "chippy" and at times it appeared the referees were content to let the girls play on so as not to interrupt the flow of the game.  Though the Lady Chiefs kept battling, they couldn't put one in the net, and the game ended with a 1-0 loss.  On a sad note, it appears that senior standout midfielder Susie Trezza reinjured her ACL with 5 minutes left to go in the game.  Susie has been a valuable member of the Lady Chiefs Varsity team for 4 years, and after ACL repair surgery last November, had worked and trained vigorously all off-season to be ready for her senior year.  On behalf of the Lady Chiefs we all wish her well!  Record stands at 4-5-1.  Next up is Cherry Hill East at home on Wednesday.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Friday, October 9
Lady Chiefs hold on to defeat Bishop Eustace 3-2!

After a tense start to the game where it appeared that Bishop Eustace's physicality would take a toll on the Lady Chiefs, Cherokee got it in gear when they realized how far out on the line Eustace's keeper played.  Senior forward Becca Melvin got the Chiefs on the board first after dribbling around the keeper and knocking in a score midway through the first half.  Late in the half, senior midfielder Chelsea Walker served up a corner kick that was kicked out by Eustace and retrieved by Walker who crossed it to sophomore midfielder Kim Nale.  Nale headed it in for the Lady Chiefs second goal of the half.  Senior forward Bridgette Bartkowski notched her third goal of the season midway through the second half for a 3-0 Cherokee lead.  With about 8 minutes left in the game the Lady Chiefs pulled their starters and Bishop Eustace revved their engines, scoring 2 goals within a 4 minute span.  The Lady Chiefs hung in there and played tough, holding on for the 3-2 victory.  Record stands at 4-4-1...next up is the rematch with the Eastern Lady Vikings on Thursday.

Sunday, October 4
Lady Chiefs Shut Out by Lenape 3-0!

In what seems to be a pattern that's held for the past 4 seasons, the Lady Chiefs were blanked by Lenape 3-0 in their Olympic American game rematch.  I can't confirm it, but if memory serves me correctly it appears that Cherokee has been taking Lenape to overtime in their first league game of the season, followed by a "caca" loss in the league rematch.  This is usually followed by 1-2 very close games in the post-season, but the Lady Chiefs have yet to solve the Lady Indians puzzle.  Adversity is known to make one stronger and here's hoping the Lady Chiefs will put all the pieces together and forage through!  Next up is Bishop Eustace on Tuesday night.  GO LADY CHIEFS!  Click on the underlined headline above for game photos.

Sunday, October 4
Cherokee, Shawnee fit to be tied!

The Lady Chiefs came out with a vengeance, scoring less than 4 minutes into the game.  Sophomore striker Emily Martinelli served up a perfect crossing ball that found senior midfielder Ashley Graham open in front of the Shawnee goal for a 1-0 lead.  Unfortunately the equalizer came 21 minutes later after a clearing header off a Shawnee corner kick caromed into the net for an own goal to tie up the score.  The second half saw the Lady Renegades playing everyone behind the ball and packing in the defense, with the Lady Chiefs still having some chances, but not being able to take advantage of them due to some stellar saves by Shawnee's goalkeeper.  Cherokee dominated most of the overtime periods with several shots on goal and corner kicks, but Shawnee's keep was up to the task and thwarted any chance of an OT win.  Click on the underlined headline above to see photos from the game.  The Philadelphia Inquirer also reported on the game, the article and accompanying photos can be found at this link:  http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/high_school/new_jersey/20090930_Buonacuores_saves_gives_Shawnee_a_tie.html.  The Burlington County Times also featured an article on the game:  http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/news_details/article/343/2009/october/01/shawnee-cherokee-fit-to-be-tied.html.

Lady Chiefs Blank Minutemaids 3-0!

Cherokee’s third straight shutout was a 3-0 win at Washington Township on Saturday morning.  Senior goalie Tori Hunt provided the morale booster with an incredible save early in the first half which provided the spark the Lady Chiefs needed to overtake the #8 ranked Minutemaids.  Senior Bridgette Bartkowski scored what would be the eventual game-winner in the first half, while junior Shelby Schneeweis and sophomore Emily Martinelli provided two insurance goals in the second.  Tori Hunt and junior Gina McCool were credited with 3 saves apiece.  The Lady Chiefs will attempt to make it 4 in a row when they take on the 6-1 Shawnee Renegades at home on Wednesday.

Saturday, September 26
Lady Chiefs Defeat Cherry Hill East 2-0!

The Lady Chiefs added another "W" to their win column by defeating the Cougars of Cherry Hill East 2-0 on Thursday afternoon.  Senior forward Bridgette Bartkowski notched the Lady Chief's first goal with a beautiful header that got by the East goalkeeper's outstretched hands.  In the second half junior midfielder Shelby Schneeweis scored off a beautiful pass from senior midfielder Susie Trezza.  Cherokee's midfielders controlled the play down the center of the field while the defense was tenacious, helping goalies Tori Hunt and Gina McCool to preserve the shutout.  The Lady Chiefs will try to make it 3 in a row as they travel to Sewell to take on the Washington Township Minutemaids on Saturday morning in their third road game of the week.  GO LADY CHIEFS!  Photos from the game can be accessed by clicking on the underlined headline above.

Lady Chiefs Overwhelm Pennsauken 7-0!

The Lady Chiefs notched their first win of the season in convincing fashion at Pennsauken on Tuesday afternoon.  Junior midfielder Shelby Schneenweis had a hat trick while sophomore forward Emily Martinelli added a pair.  Senior forward Becca Melvin and senior midfielder Chelsea Walker also scored.  Next up for Cherokee on Thursday afternoon are the Lady Cougars of Cherry Hill East.  Great win, girls...let's keep the momentum going!

Tuesday, September 22
Lady Chiefs Lose to Eastern 2-0!

The Lady Chiefs had their opportunities, but couldn't overcome the stalwart defense of the Lady Vikings and succombed to their rivals 2-0 on Wednesday night.  Facing what is arguably one of the toughest opening schedules in all of South Jersey Girls Soccer (#1 Paul Vi, #2 Lenape and #4 Eastern), the Lady Chiefs now stand at 0-3.  Cherokee will look to rebound this week with away games at Pennsauken, Cherry Hill East and Washington Township.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Top-Ranked Lenape Nips Lady Chiefs In OT!

Much to everyone's disappointment the Lenape Indians squeezed by their division rival Lady Chiefs, winning 2-1 in overtime in an Olympic Conference American Division match on Monday afternoon at Lenape.  After battling through a scoreless first half, the Indians were first on the board with a goal 5 minutes into the second half.  Senior midfielder Chelsea Walker answered for Cherokee 5 minutes later with an assist by senior defender Steph Litty.  Unfortunately Lenape scored 8 minutes into overtime to end the game on golden goal, but the Lady Chiefs should be proud of their hard work and great effort.  Next up on Wednesday night, 7:00pm at Cherokee's turf stadium:  Eastern's Lady Vikings.  GO LADY CHIEFS!

Lady Chiefs Suffer Loss in Home Opener

The Lady Chiefs hosted the #2-ranked Paul VI Eagles on their new turf field on a dreary and wet Friday afternoon.  The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead.  Midway through the first half sophomore midfielder Kim Nale headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Chelsea Walker to knot up the score.  The teams kept battling, but the score remained tied through the end of the first half.  The Eagles scored another goal early in the second half, but unfortunately this time did not lose their momentum and went on to score 2 additional goals for the 4-1 victory.  The Lady Chiefs will look to bounce back as they take on the 2-time defending state champion Lenape Indians on Monday and the Eastern Lady Vikings on Wednesday.

CHS Soccer Booster Club Link

The Cherokee Soccer Booster Club (CSBC) was formed quite a few years ago to support the girls and boys soccer program on all levels. Their primary goal is to raise funds to provide scholarships for graduating seniors that will help offset some first-year college costs.

The CSBC has scheduled a "Meet the Coaches Night" on Thursday, September 10th @ 7:00 PM in the North HS cafeteria. At least one parent or guardian is asked to attend. Each coach will address the parents and tell us what you can expect from them, the program, and the parents. Club officers will explain the purpose of the booster club and their plans for the year.

The cost of the booster club is $35 per player. The money helps offset operating expenses that include senior night, year-end banquet costs including trophies and awards, and the senior scholarships.  Seniors who have played a minimum of 3 years for Cherokee Soccer, have been members in good standing of the CSBC during that time, and who have also participated in 2 fundraisers each year while also maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5 are eligible to receive a scholarship when they graduate.

For further information on the Cherokee Soccer Booster Club, please click on the underlined article headline.  Make sure to check the link for the upcoming 3v3 tournament fundraiser.
