Carmichaels falls into Char-Houston's trap
By Matt Shetler, For the Observer-Reporter

HOUSTON - For the Chartiers-Houston High School boys basketball team, the goal is simple: make the playoffs.
The Bucs got off to a good start on the way to that goal by finding the winning formula in their own tip-off tournament.

Chartiers-Houston won the tournament championship Tuesday night with a 67-31 victory over Carmichaels in the final.

'I know it's a cliché, but we have to take things one day at a time,' said Chartiers-Houston head coach Jerry Cypher. 'Having said that though, I'm very pleased, if not surprised at how well we've executed through two games.'

The senior-laden Bucs used their experience and dominated the title game from the opening tip. Using their trapping defense, solid point-guard play, and a distinct height advantage, the Bucs made things look easy.
'That's who we are,' said Cypher. 'We are a trapping team and we like to take advantage of our size inside. Our guards get after it and our big guys battle inside.'

While the Bucs have experience starting five seniors, just the opposite is true for the Mikes. Carmichaels lost four all-section players from last season's team, leaving veteran Carmichaels head coach Don Williams with a young and inexperienced team.

'We panicked once they started trapping and dug ourselves a big hole,' Williams said.

The Bucs (2-0) trapped effectively in the first half, forcing the Mikes into numerous turnovers that resulted in easy transition baskets. When the Bucs weren't scoring in transition, they had success in their half-court offense, often getting the ball to their big man Stanley Zavatski.

'I'm very happy for Stan,' said Cypher. 'He has improved so much from last season until now in all facets of his game. He is going to turn into an effective weapon for us.

Zavatski finished with 11 points, but was dominant on the glass as well, creating several second shot opportunities for the Bucs.

'We had no answer for him,' said Williams. 'We're a very small team and he pretty much had his way with us.'

Zavatski was one of four Bucs scoring in double figures. Forward Ryan Scott led all scorers with 18 points. Forward Josh Spyra had 11 and point guard Mark Jones chipped in 10.

Jonathen Krall led the Mikes (1-1) in scoring with 13 points.

Jones, a three year starter, not only scored in double figures, he also ran the Bucs' offense very effectively, creating easy shots for his teammates throughout the game.

'I can't say enough about Mark,' added Cypher. 'He does everything we need. Many people play the point guard position, but very few are true point guards and he is. I feel he is one of the best in the WPIAL.'

Bucs guard Scott McIlvane was named tournament's Most Valuable Player.

In the consolation game, Quigley Catholic defeated Jefferson Morgan 54-46.
