And Then There Were 2! Indians Win to Advance To Face Providence Christian!
Game 1 in the Semi Finals Recap: The Indians took on the visting George Walton Academy Bulldogs in a best of 3 series. Chris Smith took the hill for the Indians. Through 2 innings, the game remained scoreless, but in the top of the 3rd, the Indian defense committed 2 errors which led to 3 runs off of 1 hit for the Bulldogs as they jumped out on top, 3-0. In the bottom of the third inning, Charlton's bat's started to heat up. Jacob Baxter singled with 2 outs and scored on a RBI double by LJ Talley. Drew Gowen followed with a single to score Talley cutting the deficit to 3-2 after 3 innings. No more runs were scored for a few innings as the pitching and defense of both teams kept the hits and runs to a minimum. But, in the 6th inning, the defensive woes for Charlton reared its ugly head again. Charlton committed 3 more errors and add to that walked 2 batters in the inning and allowed GWA to score 6 more runs, to increase their lead to 9-2. Charlton couldn't get the bats heated up again and would lose game 1, 10-2.
Game 2 Recap: Looking to stay alive in the series, Charlton took the field as the visiting team in Game 2 in a must win situation if they wanted to continue the run to the state championship game. Scott Beasley took the mound for the Indians. This game was a flip-flop of game 1. This time it was GWA committing the errors and Charlton taking advantage. Jacob Baxter reached base on an error and later scored on an RBI groundout by LJ Talley to give the Indians a quick 1-0 lead in the first. GWA tied it up in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring 1 run on 2 hits. The socreboard didn't change until the top of the 4th inning. Chris Smith led off with a single. Josh Crosby reached base on a fielder's choice. Scott Birchall followed with a single bringing up Richard Dasher. Dasher hit a single of his own, plating Crosby and Birchall, putting Charlton back on top and this time to stay. Will Gowen reached base on a defensive error by GWA. Dasher, on third now, scored on passed ball, making it 4-1 Charlton. Baxter walked and after a line out, Ryan Young earned a base on balls. W. Gowen scored on a passed ball during Young's at-bat. Drew Gowen hit a RBI double to score Baxter and Young. Smith was hit by a pitch and stole 2nd base. Crosby singled to drive in Gowen and Smith, increasing the score to 9-1 after 3 1/2 innings. Beasley surrendered a 2 run home run in the 6th, but other than that was pretty much in cruise control. Beasley scattered 6 hits throughout the game, striking out 10 Bulldog batters en route to the victory in Game 2. Final score, 9-3!
Game 3 Recap: Game 3 was the final and deciding game in the semi final round. Charlton won the coin toss and elected to be the home team. Jesse King took the mound for the Indians for his first action since hurting his hand way back in game 2 of the season. He surrendered 2 hits in the first and still would have gotten out of the inning had it not been for a costly error by the Indian defense allowing GWA to jump out to a 2-0 early lead. It wasn't until the bottom of the 2nd inning when Charlton started their attack. After 2 quick outs, Richard Dasher singled and King was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Jacob Baxter doubled to tie the game at 2, scoring Dasher and King. In the 3rd, King started to fatigue, surrendering 2 runs, giving GWA a 4-2 lead. Chris Smith came in the game in relief, 1 day after throwing 97 pitches. Tonight was a different story for Smith, his off speed pitches were working as intended and he kept the Bulldogs bats off balance the rest of the game only allowing 2 hits while striking out 4 and giving the Charlton offense a chance to battle back into the game. The Indians wasted no time, LJ Talley singled to lead off the 3rd inning. Ryan Young reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Drew Gowen singled to load the bases. Smith grounded back to the pitcher for a fielders choice as Talley was forced out at the plate. Josh Crosby and Scott Birchall earned back to back, bases loaded walks to score Young and Gowen, tieing the game at 4 heading into the 4th inning and with the momentum in the home team's dugout. Smith and the Charlton defense made quick work of the Bulldog attack, recording a 1-2-3 inning. Picking up where they left off last inning, Charlton's offense continued to do damage. King walked to start the 4th and stole second. A pinch runner came in for King but was quickly picked off thanks to careless baserunning. Baxter hit a 1-out single and after the second out was recorded, reached 3rd on a single by Young. Gowen singled, scoring Baxter and Young was able to score as well on an error on the play, giving Charlton the first lead of the game at 6-4. Charlton added 1 more run in the 5th. Crosby was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored on a RBI single by Dasher. In the 6th, the Indians added one more insurance run. Talley doubled followed by a walk and hit batter to Young and Gowen which loaded the bases. Talley scored on a passed ball to end the scoring threat and Charlton led 8-4 going into the final inning. Charlton's players, coaches, and fans sensed the meaning of this inning and with each strike thrown and each out recorded, the emotions grew stronger and stronger, louder and louder. After 2 quick outs recorded via fyl outs, the lead off Bulldog batter doubled, just delaying the inevitable. The next batter grounded out to Smith to end the game, sending your home town, Charlton County Indians baseball team to the State Championship Series! Final Score, 8-4!

Charlton Advances to Final Four
Last night, mother nature was the story early, delaying the start of the series between Charlton and Schley, but in the end, the only story was The Indians still standing as the last public school remaining in the GHSA playoffs. In game 1, Chris Smith took the hill for the Indians. The Wildcats from Schley scrapped out a run in the first thanks to a defensive error by Charlton. The Indians bats started slow and before you know it, they were trailing 3-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Since the defense gave up 3 unearned runs, the bats needed to heat up in order to keep the game close. Brad Baxter hit a one out single that seemed to spark the offense. Jacob Baxter followed with a single of his own. LJ Talley drove in both runs with a 2 RBI double, bringing Charlton to within 1 run of tying the game. Drew Gowen walked and Chris Smith singled to score Talley and tie the game at 3. Ryan Young singled to push Gowen across the plate, giving Charlton the 4-3 lead, and they never looked back. Young scored on an RBI single off the bat of Richard Dasher to end the scoring in the third. The defense settled down and Smith found his groove, allowing 3 hits and 0 runs the rest of the way. Charlton came to bat in the 4th, clinging to a 5-3 lead. J. Baxter walked to lead things off and after a flyout, stole second base. Gowen again walked to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Smith hit a 3-run homerun just to the right of centerfield, increasing the lead to 8-3. Young reached on an error and later scored on a stolen base attempt. Charlton came to bat in the 5th, up comfortabley at this point, but looking to add more runs. Dasher singled to begin the inning and after 2 quick outs, Talley hit a 2-run home run over the centerfield fence to extend the Indians lead to 11-3. Smith and the defense, sealed the deal giving game 1 to Charlton.
Game 2 started with Scott Beasley taking the mound for the Indians looking to complete the sweep of the Wildcats. Beasley was almost masterful in his performance, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 13 batters. Again, Charlton waited until the 3rd inning to get the bats going. Beasley walked and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball. Talley reached base on an error. Then with 2 outs, Smith singled to score Beasley, giving Charlton a 1-0 lead. Then, Ryan Young stepped in and on a 3-2 count with 2 outs and runners at 2nd and 3rd, Young sent a towering shot deep over the left field fence, making the score 4-0 in favor of Charlton. In the 4th, Charlton added 2 more runs as Scott Birchall walked to lead things off and Dasher singled. Beasley hit a 2 RBI double to right center giving Charlton a bigger cushion, now up 6-0. Young walked and later scored in the 5th inning, scoring Charlton's last run of the evening, putting the game in the hands of Beasley and the Indian defense. They were up to the challenge minus a hiccup. Charlton allowed Schely to score their lone run of the game in the 6th on a defensive error. Beasley struck out the side in the 7th to complete the sweep. Final Score, 7-1!

Charlton Sweeps Brookstone, Advances to Elite 8!
Today was game 2 in the second round series against Brookstone Cougars. Scott Beasley took the hill for the Indians. Because of the state playoff rules, Charlton was the visiting team and batted first. In the first, LJ Talley walked with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. Chris Smith doubled, scoring Talley, giving the Indians the early 1-0 lead. As it would turn out, that would be the only run scored in the game. The pitching and defense of both teams kept the game scoreless the rest of the way. Neither team committed an error and the walks by both team's pitchers were at a minimum. Charlton stranded 5 runners in scoring position and Brookstone stranded 3 throughout the game. Each time either team mounted a threat, pitching and defense came through to put a halt without surrendering a run. Beasley pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits. Smith came in for the 7th inning, and after walking the 2nd batter he faced, induced 2 consecutive groundouts to complete the sweep and earn the save. Final Score, 1-0!

Charlton Wins Rain Shortened Game 1
Tonight the 2nd round of the GHSA Baseball playoffs began. Charlton hosted the visting Cougars from Brookstone in what was supposed to be a double header. Unfortunately Mother Nature did not cooperate, sending much needed rain towards Indian Field. Chris Smith took the hill for the Indians. In the first, the Cougars lead off reached with a bloop single but was picked off by Smith. After a flyout, Smith walked the next batter for his only base on balls on the night, but Drew Gowen showed why there on 9 players on the field, getting Smith's back and throwing out the Cougar baserunner as he tried to steal second, ending the inning and the Cougar threat. The Indians didn't do any damage in their half of the first either. Smith and the Indian defense sat down the side in order in the second as Smith recorded 2 strikeouts in the inning and a routine grounder to Richard Dasher at 3rd base. Ryan Young started the bottom of the 2nd with a walk and stole second base. Josh Crosby singled, putting runners at first and 3rd. After a come backer to the pitcher for one out, Scott Birchall walked to load the bases. Brad Baxter singled in Young to give Charlton a 1-0 lead but Crosby was caught at 3rd after making to big of a turn around the bag. Clinging to a 1-0 lead, Charlton's defense and pitching saved them again in the 3rd. After recording 2 quick outs on infield groundouts, the Brookstone offense had back to back base hits and after a wild pitch by Smith advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd, Smith buckled down and recorded his 3rd strikeout of the game at a very important turning point in the game. Charlton wasn't able to increase its lead in the 3rd. Brookstone went down in order in the 4th. Dasher doubled to lead off the bottom of the 4th followed by a walk to Birchall. B. Baxter hit an infield single to deep short, loading the bases. After a strikeout, LJ Talley singled scoring Dasher and Birchall. Talley later scored on a wild pitch. Heading into the 5th, the Indians had a 4-0 lead but the clouds were rolling in. Again, the Cougars went down in order in the 5th, keeping the momentum in the Indians dugout wher it belonged. Crosby and Dasher hit back to back singles with one out, putting runners at first and 3rd base. Birchall hit an RBI fielders choice, scoring Crosby ending the scoring for Charlton. The storms were moving even closer in the 6th but Brookstone was unable to do more than 1 single in the inning. Jacob Baxter reached base on an error to lead off the 6th inning. Talley reached base as well on a fielder's choice error and after a walk to the on base machine, Drew Gowen loaded the bases, Smith came to the plate looking to take advantage of the situation. Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Baxter about the same time as a lightning bolt was seen in the area. When the play stopped, the teams were ordered to the dugout for the minimum 30 minute lightning delay. They would never resume play, calling the game because of the storm, but they had played enough innings to make it official. The Indian defense played error free tonight, minimizing any threat the Cougars might have had. Final Score: 6-0!

Indians Sweep Baconton Charter to Advance to Round 2!
Charlton baseball began it's GHSA playoff season tonight at home against the visiting Blazers from Baconton Charter. The Indians were looking to advance passed the first round for the first time in school history. Chris Smith took the mound for the Indians in game 1. In the first, the Blazers took advantage of the only error for the game by Charlton's defense and was able to push across 1 unearned run to take the early 1-0 lead. Charlton picked up where it left off last week, scoring 5 runs in the first inning. Jacob Baxter led off with a double to the fence and later scored on a wild pitch. 4 walks, 1 hit batter and 3 errors by Baconton led to Charlton scoring 4 more in the inning. Smith and the stingy Indian defense, held the Blazers to the 1 lone run thanks to the 2 double plays on the night and the 7 K's by Smith. Charlton added 2 more runs in the 3rd. Richard Dasher hit a 1 out single and scored on Jacob Baxter's 2nd double of the night. Baxter scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 7-1 after 3. Charlton continued it's production, adding 3 more runs in the 4th. Ryan Young hit a solo home run over the left field fence. Josh Crosby reached base on an error and scored on the throw to second trying to get Scott Birchall on a steal attempt. Birchall advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored thanks to a sacrifice fly by Dasher. Ryan Turner pitched a scoreless 5th. The Indians headed into the bottom of the 5th, needing 1 run to end the game due to the mercy rule. Baxter and Talley walked and Baconton chose to walk Gowen intentionally to load the bases with no outs. Smith hit a single down the line in left to score Baxter and end the game. Final Score, 11-1!
In game 2, Charlton would be the visting team. Scott Beasley took the hill for Charlton. Jacob Baxter walked to start the game and Talley followed reaching base on an error, moving Baxter to third. Baxter scored on a wild pitch to give Charlton a 1-0 lead. Talley scored on a RBI groundout by Ryan Young to add to the early lead. Baconton tied the game at 2 in the 1st and that would be all they would score. Charlton's errorless defense and 12 combined strikeouts by Indians pitching kept the runs to a minimum. With the game tied after 1 inning, Birchall walked to lead off the 2nd inning and quickly stole second. After a groundout and walk to Beasley put runners at 1st and third with 1 out. An error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt allowed Birchall to score the go ahead and what turned out to be the winning run. Baxter hit his 3rd double of the night, scoring Beasley. Then with 2 outs, Gowen was hit by a pitch for the 3rd time tonight and Smith singled to score Baxter. Ryan Young hit a 2 RBI double to score Gowen and Smith, given Charlton a 8-2 lead. Charlton added 2 more runs in the 3rd from a 2 out single by Baxter, an RBI single by Talley and an RBI double by Gowen. The Indians continued scoring in the 4th, adding 5 more runs. CHARLTON INDIANS- REGION 2A CHAMPS IN 2012
The Indians completed a remarkable regular season tonight by defeating the Irwin County Indians for the Region 2A championship! The win gives Charlton an unbelievable 15-0 record in region play for the season and catapults them into the GHSA playoffs which will begin next week.
Chris Smith, 7-0 in region play on the mound, took the hill for Charlton looking to stake his claim on the Region Pitcher of the Year Award. In the first, Irwin went down in order. Charlton came to bat and if there was any doubt on anyone's mind before the game if Charlton would complete the dream season undefeated, the doubt was put to rest on the second pitch of the game. Jacob Baxter sent the pitch over the fence in left center to give Charlton a quick 1-0 lead. That run would turn out to be all they would need on the night however, the offense felt the spark from Baxter's bat, and continued the hitting fury, amassing 6 runs in the first. LJ Talley doubled followed by Drew Gowen's hit by pitch. Chris Smith singled in Talley. After a flyout and a sac bunt put runners at 2nd and 3rd, Richard Dasher hit a 2 RBI single, giving Charlton a 4-0 lead. Scott Birchall doubled to put runners again at 2nd and 3rd. Scott Beasley singled in 2 more runs to push Charlton's lead out to 6-0 after the first inning. In the 2nd, Irwin had 2 hits which put runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out but Smith induced an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to ruin the scoring threat. No more scoring or threats occurred until Charlton's half of the 3rd inning. Ryan Young and Josh Crosby hit back to back singled to start the inning. Dasher grounded out but drove in his 3rd run in the game. After back to back hit batters to Birchall and Beasley loaded the bases, Crosby scored on a passed ball. Baxter singled to score Birchall. Talley did his job as well, hitting a sac fly to right field to score Beasley. Gowen hit a sinking line drive to left field, driving in Baxter and stretching it to a double. Good pitching by Smith and outstanding, error free defense held up all game as Irwin was only able to send 16 batters to the plate, one more than the minimum for the game. Charlton added it's final run in the 4th. Ryan Turner walked and scored later in the inning thanks to a RBI single by Talley. Irwin went down in order in the 5th to seal the deal. Indians Sweep Wilcox, Make GHSA Playoffs Two Years In A Row!
Tonight the Indians had a lot riding on the games played at Indian Field. They had an undefeated Region season on the line, a chance to make the state playoffs for the 2nd year in a row and a chance to play for the Region 2A championsip. The Wilcox Patriots from Region 2B stood in thier way. Chris Smith took the mound in Game 1 trying to improve his region record as a starting pitcher to 7-0. In the first, Wilcox didn't mount a threat so Charlton came to bat ready to take an early lead. LJ Talley walked with 1-out and quickly stole 2nd base. Smith came to the plate with 2 outs and doubled to right field to score Talley, giving Charlton the 1-0 lead after one inning. An error by Charlton's defense and a walk put Patriot runners at 2nd and 3rd as they threatened to tie it up. Smith and the Indians defense, buckled down and ended the threat. There wasn't much action until Charlton's turn at bat in the bottom of the third. Jacob Baxter led off with a walk. After a fly out, Baxter stole second. Drew Gowen doubled but Baxter was tagging so he wasn't able to score. Smith drove in Baxter, putting runners at the corners. A balk by Wilcox's pitcher allowed Gowen to walk home, pushing Charlton's lead to 3-0. Scott Birchall led of the 4th with a base hit and Ryan Turner reached base thanks to a defensive miscue. Birchall scored on a wild pitch allowing pinch runner Brandon Dell to advance to third base. Baxter walked and stole second for the 2nd time in the game. Talley hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right, scoring Dell and advancing Baxter to 3rd base. Gowen walked and stole second base, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd. Smith hit a sac fly of his own, scoring Baxter, giving Charlton a 7-0 lead after 4 innings. Ryan Turner took over on the mound to start the 5th inning, and promptly retired the Patriot batters in order, bringing Charlton's offense back to the plate. Baxter drew his 3rd walk on the night, this time with 2 outs already. Talley doubled with 2 outs to add to the run total. After 5 innings, Charlton had an 8-0 lead. Wilcox would score an unearned run in the 6th thanks to 2 errors by the Indians defense. Ryan Young walked and later scored thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Josh Crosby pushing the lead to 9-1, going into the 7th and final inning. Turner again retired the side in order to preserve the win. Final Score: 9-1!
In Game 2, Charlton would be the visiting team because of Region Crossover game rules. Scott Beasley took the hill for the Indians, just needing one more win to make the playoffs. Charlton waited until the 2nd inning before the bats heated up, and heat up they did. They sent 15 batters to the plate before the top of the 2nd ended, scoring 11 runs! Smith led of with a single followed by an RBI double by Young. A stolen base and hit batter by Young and Crosby respectively, put runners on the corners. Beasley helped his cause by hitting a sac fly to right, scoring Young putting the Indians up 2-0. Richard Dasher reached base on an error, scoring Crosby. Then with 2 outs, the hitting storm began. Baxter singled in Dasher. Talley singled, driving in Baxter. Gowen followed with a walk. Smith hit a 2 RBI double and advanced to 3rd on a passed ball. Young continued the onslaught, singling in Smith. Crosby was next with another base hit. Beasley singled in Young and an error on the play allowed Crosby to score as well. Dasher had the last single of the inning, scoring Beasley, putting Charlton's lead at an unsurmountable, 11-0 heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning. Wilcox tried to make a comeback, hitting back to back doubles to score 2 runs but that was all they could muster on the evening thanks to Beasley's pitching and an error free game of defense by the Indians. In the 4th, Charlton scored 2 more runs. Crosby doubled to lead things off and Beasley singled him home. Baxter hit his 3rd single of the game, scoring Beasley and Charlton's final run of the evening. Beasley retired the side in order in the 5th to complete the sweep and qualify Charlton for the GHSA playoffs. Final Score: 13-2!

Indians Notch Another Win, Add 1 More To The Total Wins Record
Tonight the Indians travelled to Ludowici to take on the Blue Tide from Long County in a non-region game that was rained out yesterday and re-scheduled for today. LJ Talley took the hill for Charlton. The started great for the Charlton offense. The first 2 batters of the game drew walks, Jacob Baxter and LJ Talley then Drew Gowen singled in Baxter. It looked like the Indians would score a lot more in the first, but a pop out and an inning ending double play ended Charlton's threat of a big inning. Long County threatened to at least tie the game in the first as they had runners at 1st and 3rd with one out, but a strikeout by Talley and a groundout kept the Indians lead at 1-0. Charlton couldn't produce anything in the 2nd, going down in order. The Blue Tide never mounted another threat to score as Talley (2 IP), Scott Beasley (1 IP), Chris Smith (1 IP), and Ryan Turner (1 IP), combined to pitch a 2 hit shutout. Heading into thier turn at bat in the 3rd inning, the Indians were clinging to a 1-0 lead. J. Baxter led off with a double to the bottom of the fence in left field. Talley singled and stole 2nd base. Gowen reached bases on an error but the runners weren't able to advance on the play which loaded the bases with no outs. Chris Smith hit a drive to left center, one hopping the fence, scoring 2 runs and putting runners at 2nd and 3rd. Ryan Young walked to again load the bases. Josh Crosby earned a RBI walk to keep the bases loaded. Richard Dasher followed with a RBI single and Brad Baxter singled, knocking in 2 more runs. Ryan Turner walked to once again load the bases. Jacob Baxter singled in 2 runs. Then with 1 out, Gowen walked to load the bases one more time. Smith walked in another run. 2 strikeouts with the bases loaded ended the threat of even more runs. After 3, Charlton led, 10-0. No more runs were scored until the 5th, when Scott Birchall led off with a single. A 1-out walk to Dylan Turner and a hit by pitch to Brandon Dell loaded the bases yet again for the Indians. Beasley walked to push in a run. J. Come on out to Indian Field and root on your home town team next week! The Indians will be competing for the Region Championship and need all the support they can get. Monday is a double header, so 2 games for the price of one, I don't think it gets any better than that.
