Charlton, Columbia Tie 48-48 in Wild Shootout
In a game that featured over 1000 yards of total offense Charlton Co. and Lake City(FL) Columbia matched each other play for play in a shootout that resulted in a 48-48 tie in the Border Wars Classic played at Chris Gilman Stadium. The Tigers struck quickly on their opening possession hitting a quick pass and the talented receiver out ran the Indian defense to paydirt for a 7-0 Tiger lead. With 3:53 left in the 1st quarter the Indians got a 53 yard scoring strike from Chris Milton to Ronald Eldell. The try for two failed and the Tribe trailed 7-6. With 2:40 left in the quarter talented Columbia RB Tiger Powell sprinted 64 yards for a score. The 2nd quarter was full of points as Columbia scored on a 19 yard TD pass and returned a fumble 66 yards for a score as Columbia took a 27-6 lead. With 6:20 left in the half Kesean Peterson stepped in front of a Tiger pass and sprinted 75 yards to cut the deficit to 27-12. Columbia would answer back with a 42 yard scoring strike and then got a safety when a high snap on a punt was recovered by Milton in the end zone to make it 36-12 and things weren't looking real good for the Tribe. But Charlton drove down and with 57 seconds left Milton found Peterson in the end zone from 15 yards out. Milton ran in the 2-pt. conversion to make it 36-20. But Columbia wasn't finished yet as they drove quickly and got a 22 yard FG with 1 second left in the half as the Tigers took a 39-20 lead into the locker room. Charlton took the opening kickoff of the 2nd half and drove down to score on a Tre Hamilton 5 yard run to make it 39-26 in favor of the Tigers. After a defensive stop by the Tribe, the Indians got back on the board when Milton hit Hamilton from 10 yards out. Milton ran in the 2-pt. try and all of a sudden it was 39-34 after 3 quarters. At the 11:28 mark of the 4th quarter Milton scooted up the middle for 32 yards and remarkably Charlton took a 42-39 lead after Hamilton ran in the PAT. The Tigers were not fazed though as it only took them one minute to regain the lead when they got a 55 yard run from Tiger Powell, a University of South Florida commitment to make it 46-42 in favor of Columbia. With 4:07 left in the game and the Tribe backed up to their goal line backup QB Timothy Wescott, in for an injured Milton, was tackled in the end zone giving the Tigers another safety making it 48-42. Once again the never say die Indians showed their pride holding Lake City and getting the ball back. With Milton back on the field got a 44 yard pass to Ronald Eldell to put the ball inside the 10 yard line. After three plays and the ball on the 5 yard line and 16 seconds remaining Milton hit Peterson in the end zone to tie the game at 48 all. But the action wasn't quite finished. After a short kickoff and return the Tiger QB scrambled deep into Indian territory setting up a 40 yard FG attempt on the last play of the game. Fortunately for the Tribe the kick was off it's mark and both teams settled for an amazing 48-48 tie. Offensively for the Tribe Milton tossed 4 TD passes for the 2nd week in a row while adding one on the ground and 2 2-pt. conversions. Milton completed 29-44 passes for an amazing 392 yards(3rd most in school history) and added 59 yards rushing. Kesean Peterson led the receiving corps with 8 catches for 95 yards followed by Ronald Eldell(3-112), Tre Hamilton(7-69), Donovan Bolden(7-69), and Tim Hamlette(4-47). Defensively in addition to Peterson's interception for a TD, the Tribe got fumble recoveries from Timothy Wescott and Ravi Patel while Frederick Lambert recorded a QB sack.
