Charleswood Broncos: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When does the season start?
A: Teams usually start practicing in mid-July with games starting in mid-August. Teams play up to 10 games per season.
Q: How often do the teams practice?
A: Practices are held 2 to 3 nights per week, for 1 to 2 hours (depending on the age and time of year)
Q: When are the games?
A. Teams play one game on the weekend, either on Saturday or Sunday.
Q. Do I have to purchase any equipment?
A. No! We supply all equipment. Players will be outfitted in May, prior to the spring training camp. You’ll only need to purchase cleats. Please see the News section to view the Bylaw on cleats. Cleats can be quite costly, so you'll want to make sure you get the right ones the first time. You’ll also want to have some sock tape to help hold the uniform and pads in place.
Q. Can I volunteer?
A. Absolutely! We are always in need of volunteers for various jobs. We require volunteers in the canteen during practices and games. As well, we need people to man the Barbeque at games. There are opportunities to volunteer to sell 50/50 tickets at Bomber games and to work Bingos at the Casino. Coaches, team Managers and Trainers are also volunteer positions. These are only some of the volunteer opportunities for you to consider. For information on volunteering you can call Cheryl Ginter @ 896-0723.
Q. My child plays hockey, will this interfere?
A. Many football players also play hockey. Depending on how far your child goes into the playoffs, there may be a short period of time for overlap with football and hockey tryouts. Our players have found this to be quite manageable.
Q. We go on holidays in July or August, what will happen?
A. We recognize that many families go away on vacation during the summer. All we ask is that you tell your caoch when you will be taking holidays so they can expect the absence, and that your child attends any practices and games before vacation and after vacation.
Q. My child is already 10 years old, is it too late to start playing?
A. It's never too late to start. We have many new players each year at every level.
Q. My child has never played before, are their camps to attend?
A. There are some camps available. This year the Rifles are holding their first camp. You can find information in our handout section. In May/June there is a Broncos/Raiders camp held at the Broncos field, as well most teams have a Spring Training camp (your coach will let you know about this). The Mini-U at U of M holds a football camp during the summer, as well they offer a weekend camp in May. You can find links for some of these camps in our Links section.
Q. Will my child get hurt?
A. Football is a contact sport, so there are no guarantees that your child will not get hurt. The kids are equipped with quality helmets and pads which reduces the possibility of injuries considerably. Having a child that is going into their 7th year of football, I can say from my experience that most injuries are minor.
Q. My child only weighs 50 lbs., can they play?
A. Definately! There is a spot spot on the field for any child who wants to play. Your coach does an assessment of all players and will choose the best spot for them to play.
