Chargers Baseball Academy: About Us

Joel Mishler

Academy Directors

Charger co-director and co-founder Joel Mishler has been involved with coaching, scouting, and giving lessons for 29 years.  He served as the Glen Oaks Community College head baseball coach for 10 years where he won over 300 games and took his 2000 team to the World Series and a third place finish in NJCAA Div. II.  During his tenure at Glen Oaks he coached 9 players that went on to play professional baseball and over 60 players that played at four-year universities and colleges.  He served as an Associate Scout for the Baltimore Orioles from 1996 through 2005 and is currently an associate scout with the Florida Marlins and the head varsity baseball coach at Westview High School.

Ben Bailey

Co-director Ben Bailey graduated from Westview High School where he played his high school baseball for coach Orv Yoder.  From Westview, Bailey spent one year at Western Michigan University and one year pitching at Glen Oaks Community College, where he played for head coach Joel Mishler.  After the 95’ season at Glen Oaks, Bailey was drafted in the tenth round of the major league baseball draft by the Cincinnati Reds.  Bailey moved quickly through the professional ranks and made it all the way to AAA Indianapolis by the end of the 1996 season.  At the end of that season, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers in the Ruben Sierra deal.  During the 1997 season Bailey had season ending elbow surgery which eventually ended his career after a two and a half year come-back bid.  After working in the automotive industry for approximately 10 years, Ben began getting back into the game he loves through coaching in the high school ranks, and then joining the Indiana Chargers organization in its inaugural season of 2007.  Ben has been giving private lessons and working camps over the past 15 years while helping out at Glen Oaks, in professional baseball, and as a private instructor with individuals in the immediate area.

In 4 short years in operating the Indiana Chargers Baseball Club, Mishler and Bailey have helped 35 players go on to play baseball at the college level!
