Summer Team Events

NSC Chargers summer tournament schedule:

Crossfire Select Cup

Sky River Tournament (*** GU18 bracket was CANCELLED ***)

Aug 25 – 28 @ Fairfield Park, Monroe

Summer Training Camp (Academy) FINAL Dates:

  • Aug 1 - 5
  • Aug 8 - 12

Looking like AM sessions will work better for our players.  Players will be combining with other teams during these sessions. We did not have enough number of players to schedule a "team" session.

Players are encouraged to do both sessions if you are free but most definitely consider at least one session this summer.

Player Personal Goals for 2010 Season

Players should be thinking about 2 personal SOCCER GOALS they will commit to working hard to achieve this season.  Your goals will be measurable and have some estimated time of completion.  Goals will be due this summer (date TDA), submitted to coach on written paper or sent in email.

As select soccer players, it is important that you set goals for yourself that help to motivate you to improve and become better soccer players.  Think about the areas in soccer where you may need the most improvement or perhaps some skill you always wanted to learn... then get after it!  Don't just write it down and forget about it (ie do nothing); commit yourself to really attaining your sports goals thru hard work and dedication AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED BY BECOMING A BETTER ALL-AROUND SOCCER PLAYER!

Player Tips for Soccer Tryouts

Here's some ideas that will help players improve their showing at soccer tryouts (use this for both select and HS team tryouts):

Practice Technique and Comfort on the Ball
MOST IMPORTANT: weeks of preparation (before tryouts) on the ball, passing/receiving, dribbling, juggling, shooting, all pay off huge the day of tryouts. CLOSE BALL CONTROL, or lack of it, is one of the two things easiest to observe in a tryout. Practice at home or spring training sessions playing 3v3 and 4v4 to cone goals.

Work on Your Athleticism
PACE is only one part of athleticism. AGILITY and BALANCE are also easy to observe. Besides good running and stopping technique, work on CHANGE OF DIRECTION with and without the ball.

Arrive Early and Get Touches in Early
Most players first 100 touches are not their best (think about our 1 hour warm up sessions before games), yet many players come to tryouts and don't get 100 touches on the ball before the start (or sometimes even by the end). Come early with a partner and get at least 30 minutes of ball work. Also be sure to allow sufficient time for your warmup/stretch routine, nothing worst than a muscle strain right at tryouts.

Play with Vigor and Influence the Game
Most tryouts start with small-sided games, like 4v4 or 5v5 to PUGG goals, and may work up to 11 v 11 to goals with GKs. Most of the evaluation and decision may be made in the small-sided phase. Play vigorously, give 110%, don't hold back, and try to win and use as many balls as possible to have as great an impact on the game (eg the 4v4 session) as possible. For defenders, this means winning balls and then attacking out of the back by overlapping forward of their pass or running with the ball. Midfielders and strikers too should win and use as many balls as possible. IMPORTANT: staying involved in the attack does not mean always taking on opponent 1v1, but to always provide instant and continuing support for the passes.

Communicate in the Games
Players who give instructions and help other players with verbal and visual cues stand out as leaders. IMPORTANT: good communication makes a player stand out in a positive way to the evauators, silent players may appear to be out of the game mentally.

Ask Questions and Show you had Fun
Players should feel ok to ask questions to ensure that they understand what's going to happen at both the tryout and during any follow-on tryouts, etc. Feel free to express to coaches you had a good time and want to play for the team (especially with HS team tryouts).
