Chris "Waterboy" Spence help Frankford win Semi
Spence comes up
plenty big for Frankford
By Joe Mason
Times Sports Editor
Chris Spence listened to all the critics.
During his freshman year at Frankford High School, Spence thought about going out for the Pioneers football team.
At the time, though, he was 5-feet-6 and 145 pounds a factor that made him decide to keep playing for his neighborhood football team, the Frankford Chargers.
When sophomore year rolled around, he figured hed again stick with the Chargers. But Spence changed his mind. He decided to just try out with the "big boys."
"I came out and right away I got put with the running backs . . . they were a lot bigger than me," said Spence, now a junior. "I was nervous, real nervous, but I just played football, the same thing I was doing my whole life.
"Then in the first practice I got hit pretty hard, and then all the nervous went away," Spence recalled. "They were bigger and all, but I like hitting. Im really glad I decided to play for the high school team."
Size certainly hasnt been a problem for Spence. He might give up some height and be a few pounds lighter than his opponents, but hes been a huge asset to the Pioneers defense.
Spence is now in his second year as a starter. Last year, when the Pioneers won the Public League championship, he lined up at outside linebacker. This year hes in the thick of things, playing middle linebacker.
He also chips in on the Pioneers wing-T offense.
"Christopher is our leader on defense and he does anything he can to help the offense," Frankford coach Mike Capriotti said. "Hes our guy . . . hes been doing it on defense for two years now, and hes been doing a great job on offense. He does whatever we need, and thats why hes such a special player."
Just two years ago, he enjoyed that distinction with the Chargers. He didnt think his rise in stature in the Public League would happen so quickly.
Spence got his first taste of high school football in dramatic fashion. In his first game, the Pioneers visited Strath Haven for a Friday night contest. In the 2005 opener, Spence started the game on the bench, but opened the second half as a linebacker.
"I got out there and was real pumped and real nervous," Spence recalled of the 24-0 loss. "There were a lot of people there, a huge stadium, and we were playing a really good team and it was under the lights. It was a great way to begin my career.
"I think that game helped me because I got to play in that environment, and if I did it then, I could do it any time," he continued. "That prepared me for everything."
Right now, Spence and his teammates are preparing to defend their Public League crown.
The Pioneers defeated Murrell Dobbins Tech, 32-6, on Nov. 11 to advance to the Public League title tilt for the second year in a row.
The Pioneers were without the services of starting running backs Nate Johnson and Calvin Spires, who were nursing injuries, so Spence handled the running duties.
He rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown, and also picked off a pair of passes on defense.
Frankford also got a strong day from quarterback Andreas Hudson, who threw for 157 yards and three touchdowns.
Frankford will face George Washington in the Public League championship game on Saturday. The game will be played at Northeast High School; kickoff is at 2 p.m.
Though Spence is starting to do a little of everything for the Pioneers, things havent changed much. Hes just trying to go out and take care of business. He also has to make sure his teammates do the same.
As the starting middle linebacker, its his job to recognize offensive formations and make the calls for the Pioneer defense. Spence also knows he cant call the defensive alignments that he likes; its his job to have the defenders in the right schemes.
"I like to blitz . . . I love to go in and get the quarterback," said Spence, who has five sacks on the year. "But I cant do that every play. I really only go when I see an opening or think I can help. If I cant, I just stay home.
"Calling the plays is fun, and it means a lot that the coaches trust me to do it," he said. "It definitely helps that I learned a lot while playing outside (linebacker) last year. I got to watch and learn for a year, and now this year I try to use what Ive learned to help the defense."
It also has helped him on offense. If Spence had the chance to be a featured back, it seems likely hed do pretty well. Hes quick, strong, and he never shies away from contact.
But Spence has no problem with being the blocking back.
"Honestly, I dont care about getting yards. I think Id rather be the fullback or the wingback . . . you know, the guy who does the work but doesnt get the touchdowns or yards," said Spence, who had rushed for just 76 yards on the year prior to his breakout day against Dobbins last week. "I like hitting, thats my favorite part about the game. If I can hit someone and we score a touchdown, thats just as good as scoring it myself."
Its an interesting attitude, especially when you consider that this lead blocker is a guy once deemed too small for high school football.
"I think people underestimate me, a lot like they underestimated our team this year," Spence said. "Now were getting the recognition, but in the beginning of the year, people said we were too small. Were a lot smaller than we were last year when we won, but were tough, man.
"Size doesnt matter; I think Ive proved that a little," he added. "Im still trying to get bigger, but we do a lot with our size. Size is an excuse, and we dont use excuses here."

Chargers Alumnus gain yards and scholarships his senior year at Frankford High School
The former Chargers running back is gaining yards as well as scholarship at Frankford H.S. Calvin got his start on the 65lbs football team.
An in-Spires-ing leader for Frankford
Oct 21, 2006
By TED SILARY silaryt@phillynews.com
CALVIN SPIRES jumped up quickly after being stopped for no gain and displayed some not-happy body language.
Then, some words came streaming out of his mouth and they sounded pretty much like a growl.
When you're a top-quality veteran on a team with designs on claiming another Public League football championship, performing after the ball is snapped is not nearly enough.
You have to lead, and sometimes that means snapping out on your teammates.
"I lost it," Spires said. "I know I got out of control a little.
"The first time I got the ball, my linemen blocked for me nice. But then they eased up, and it was like they were taking them for a joke. I had to let them know. On every play, you have to play your hardest.
"Coach Cap [Mike Capriotti] always tells me that on this team, I'm like his oldest son and the other players are my little brothers. "
So, yeah, Spires did some reaming. Then eventually got to rejoice.
In a Public League Red Division game played on a muddy field and filled with odd occurrences - an ejection was reversed 2 1/2 minutes after it happened; two members of the chain crew were removed for incompetence and horsing around - Spires and Frankford managed to handle visiting Murrell Dobbins Tech, 38-25.
The 6-foot, 190-pound senior, who lines up at the time-honored glamour position in the Pioneers' offense, left halfback, carried 13 times for 150 and two touchdowns.
His second score, a 20-yarder, was followed by a conversion run from quarterback Andreas Hudson and created some distance with 10 minutes, 6 seconds remaining after the pesky Mustangs had kept hanging around and hanging around some more.
This was the classic sandwich game. Frankford last week rocked most folks' preseason Pub favorite, George Washington, 28-13, while next week brings a Friday night visit to another archrival, Northeast.
Spires doesn't want to hear such drivel, honestly.
"We should have been competitive from the start," he said. "You take things light, you get in trouble.
"We talked at halftime about all the mistakes we made, and how we were playing around, and how we couldn't continue that. Second half, much better. We were holding our blocks and making good penetration down the field. "
Frankford immediately lit up the scoreboard as Ervin Goodson caught the kickoff and zoomed 80 yards to a score. Other touchdowns aside from Spires' went to fullback Nate Johnson (13-76) on a 1-yard run and to Warren Tinsley on a 5-yard flip from Hudson.
The Pioneers' line featured center Alexander Ortiz, guards James Quiles and William Mount, tackles William Ray and William Austin (geez, are there enough guys named William?) and Tinsley and J.C. Montgomery at the ends. (Montgomery was the guy whose ejection was wiped out at halftime after ref Tom McClain said there had been a mistake in the reporting of numbers after back-to-back personal fouls. )
Dobbins was led by Melvin Smith, who carried 19 times for 97 yards and a TD. Eric Wiley and quarterback Wesley Brown also posted rushing scores and Brown whipped a 35-yard TD pass to Darrell "Butta" Brown (no relation).
Although the playing surface was OK in spots, significant puddles also were sprinkled around and Spires said: "This was the worst mud I ever played in. I had to remember to lift my knees higher. You didn't do that, you didn't get good traction. I found that out early. "
Spires, who lives near Lesher and Orthodox, is an A-B student with an eye on business or youth counseling. He's about to start accepting SAT-preparation help from Frankford teachers who want to see him realize his dream of playing Division I football. Temple and Rutgers have been in touch, and they no doubt love his physical nature.
"I like to make blocks for the fullback and I like to run a lot, too," he said. "From the first time I went out for the Frankford Chargers' 65-pounders, my coach, Rasheed Muhammad [later a Pioneers assistant], put me at running back, because he said I had good speed.
"I like a lot of hitting. And when you're a running back, you expect that. When guys come at me, hey, I go at them. I just don't let them hit me. I deliver the blows, too. "
And sometimes, he scorches teammates' ears with a salty message.
All in the life of a captain. *

Frankford Yellowjackets
Most football fans in the Philadelphia area have heard of the Frankford Yellow Jackets and some even know that the team won an NFL championship, "...back in the 30's or something." That, unfortunately, that's about the extent of common knowledge regarding this ball club, and it's a real shame. Far too few people are aware of the fascinating story of this organization that was once both a dominant force on the gridiron and a vital part of the community
