Wednesday, February 14 Roster Finalized The Blizzard roster for 2007 is set and the players, coaches and parents are looking forward to an exciting summer of baseball. Joining returners Frankie Varga (Lake Catholic), Jimmy Lyons (Lake Catholic) and Phil Navatsyk (Chardon) are Andrew Ross (Chardon) , Jake Stang (Berkshire), Clayton Burke (Trinity), Nate Debick (Chagrin Falls), Rodney Lewis (Mentor), John Colwill (Berkshire), Matt Snowberger (St. Ignatius), Ryan Begun (Mayfield) and Zac Campbell (Orange). We haven't been able to do anything yet except hit inside. That's gone very well and most of these boys will be good players on their high school teams. In the mean time, two plow trucks are currently stuck in about two feet of snow in the Navatsyk driveway. Hopefully, the global warming will kick in soon. Monday, March 19 Blizzard Players Excel At High School Tryouts Blizzard players have done very well at their respective tryouts for their high school baseball teams. A number of the boys will be playing for their high school JV teams and a couple may even get some varsity time. One of the highlights of the tryouts was Matt Snowberger making the St. Ignatius freshmen team where an army of kids were vying for positions on the team. Andrew Ross, Clayton Burke, Nate Debick, Rodney Lewis, and Zac Campbell will all be one of the top pitchers on their teams. Many of our guys are either catching or playing middle infield on their respective teams which means our defense up the middle should be good this summer. We'll add more information as it comes in. Remember fellas, "You don't walk off the island." Wednesday, May 9 LaMarca Brothers Plus Ryan Weed Added To Roster Ross and Jack LaMarca are coming home from Boulder City, Nevada and will play for the Blizzard beginning sometime in early to mid June. This will add some depth and pitching to the team. The LaMarca family has been with the Blizzard since the beginning. It will be good to see them again. In addition, Ryan Weed will be returning to the Blizzard. Ryan's defense and ability to eat up innings as a pitcher will also help this team greatly. We now have fifteen players, which is alot - but with our schedule, we'll need them all. Tuesday, May 22 Blizzard Opens Season With A Win The Blizzard opened the 2007 season with an 8-4 victory over Triple Play Baseball Academy. Ryan Weed went four solid innings for the win and Clayton Burke threw the final three innings for the save. Frankie Varga had a single, a double and four rbi. Jimmy Lyons had two doubles and two runs scored. Nate Debick had a big two run double and Phil Navatsyk walked three times, stole three bases and scored three runs out of the lead off slot. Ryan Begun also added a blistering double up the right center field alley. Blizzard pitchers walked three and struck out six. The defense was solid as Matt Snowberger and Nate Debick looked like they are going to be fun to watch on the left side of the infield. All in all it was a pretty good first game except for the fact that nine of the twenty-one Blizzard outs came in the form of strike outs. Chardon must put the ball in play more frequently in order to compete with the upper echelon teams. This team should only get better as the season progresses. Tonight's game was a good start. Friday, May 25 No Free Bases The importance of the free base statistic was on full display as Chardon defeated the Minotaurs in the first game of the GLBL Memorial Day Tournament by a score of 3-2. After giving up two quick runs in the top of the first on two hits and three walks, Rodney Lewis came on in relief of Zac Campbell with the bases loaded and no outs. Rodney then went seven shut out innings, giving up four hits and walking no one. He faced the minimum 21 batters as he picked off two runners at second, a third runner was caught stealing and another runner was doubled off of second to end the first inning. The Blizzard struggled at the plate against a decent Minotaur pitcher but they were able to eke out a few runs with a couple of stolen bases, a couple of timely hits and one critical Minotaur error. Nate Debick had two hits to lead the Blizzard "attack." Just the night before, coach Navatsyk was preaching about the "free base rule" - the team that gives up the least amount of free bases (walks, errors, stolen bases, extra bases on bad throws or missed cut off men, etc.) wins about 95% of the time. Tonight's game was a prime example of this rule. 2-0 with a couple of early morning games coming up the next two days. Let it snow!! Saturday, May 26 Error Free! The Blizzard played another error free, solid baseball game in defeating the Lake County Warhawks 9-0 for their second win in GLBL Memorial Day pool play. Andrew Ross, having not thrown in eight days, was not as sharp as he had been most of the spring with the Chardon varsity but he competed hard for five innings and kept a very good hitting Warhawks team off the scoreboard. Nate Debick came on and threw strikes in the final two innings to seal the win. Chardon scored two runs in the first and five in the second - all with two outs - to take a comfortable lead which they refused to give back. Jake Stang had a big two out, two run single in the first and Phil Navatsyk followed with a two out, two run single in the second. Rodney Lewis singled and doubled. Nate Debick was on base three times via a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Phil Navatsyk scored three runs and set the tempo for the game with a 12 pitch at bat to start the game which culminated in a walk and two stolen bases. Matt Snowberger also singled and doubled. This was a very well played game in every respect. Sunday, May 27 Lights Out Defense!! The new look Chardon Blizzard took on the new look Central Ohio Sharks and came away with another shut out, error free defensive performance in picking up a 4-0 win and, most likely, the number one seed going into Monday's semi-finals of the GLBL Memorial Day tournament. The Sharks, coached by the former Gahanna Lions staff had five or six of the top Gahanna players plus a number of the other top players from the Columbus area. Clayton Burke was masterful in this one as he changed speeds effectively, walked only one hitter (in the first inning) and faced the minimum number of hitters over the last five and two thirds innings. Phil Navatsyk led off the game against what appeared to be the Sharks number one starter with a first pitch bomb over the left fielder's head for a double. He then went to third on a ground ball and scored when Nate Debick lined another double to left center. Phil also scored in the third and the fifth as Rodney Lewis and Nate Debick drove in two runs each to lead the Blizzard attack. Rodney stayed very hot as he singled and doubled but the story in this game was the pitching and defense. Jimmy Lyons (double and a run scored), Ryan Weed and Rodney Lewis played lights out defense in the outfield, getting great jumps, taking great angles and, basically, gobbling up anything hit in the air. The infield was just as efficient as they got to every ball, made every play and turned a nifty 4-6-3 double play in the fourth inning. Once Clayton Burke got the lead, he pounded the strike zone and made the hard hitting Sharks put the ball in play. He threw only 32 pitches over the final five innings. 3-0 and the number one seed: so far, so good. Now we need to finish the job. Monday, May 28 It's Supposed To Be Hard Well, Jimmy Dugan's words were proven true again. Baseball is a hard game and the Blizzard had made it look easy for the first four games of the year. Game 5 brought back the reality of how hard the game is and how important the little details are as Chardon lost their semi-final game of the GLBL Memorial Day Tournament to the Pittsburgh Elite 9-8 in extra innings. This game was lost early when mistakes doing the little things like not sliding to beat a force out on the bases, missing pick off signs, swinging at breaking balls out of the strike zone early in the count and giving several free bases via errors led to the Blizzard trailing 8-3 at the end of 4 1/2 innings. The good news is that the boys battled back and scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game. The potential game winning run was on third in the sixth and on second in the seventh but Chardon couldn't manage to get the key base hit to win the game. In the eighth, the tie was snapped when the lead off man for Pittsburgh hit a booming home run to right center (his second of the day). Although the lead off man reached base for the Blizzard in the bottom of the eighth, they were unable to score as the game ended on back to back strikeouts. This was a very exciting baseball game with each team pounding out eleven hits as Chardon jumped out to a 3-0 lead, gave the lead away and then battled back only to lose it in the eighth. Phil Navatsyk had two singles, a double, two runs scored and an rbi to lead the Chardon offense. Andrew Ross also had a single and a double and pitched three strong innings in relief of Ryan Weed who went the first five. John Colwill walked twice, scored two runs and had a big two out run scoring single in the bottom of the sixth. Eleven strikeouts by Blizzard hitters showed once again an area that the boys need to improve on. Seven base runners were stranded in scoring position and nine overall were left on base. Much of this can be directly attributed to not putting the ball in play often enough. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, only left three runners stranded as they took advantage of every opportunity presented to them. This was one that the coaches, players and parents definitely felt could have been won. It especially hurts because Pittsburgh went on to win the championship game with a relatively easy 7-2 victory. As Jimmy Dugan said, "It's supposed to be hard. The hard is what makes it great." Sunday, June 3 Blizzard Wins Weekend With The Canadians After feeling like they let the GLBL Memorial Day championship slip through their fingers, the Blizzard came back and won three hard fought games to take the round robin championship in the Weekend With The Canadians. The only blemish was a 4-1 rain shortened loss to the Ontario Phoenix which was redeemed by a 5-0 shutout win over them in the championship game. Canada sent two fine baseball teams with some great kids and parents for the four team round robin that included the Lake County Warhawks as well. A special thanks goes out to Bill Bernay and the Warhawks who did a great job coordinating umpires and helping keep the Painesville Riverside field in playable condition. The weekend began with a great baseball game against the Canadian Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds are recognized by most people as one of the top (if not the top) amateur baseball clubs in eastern Canada. They came into the game having already played nineteen games with a record of 18-1. Just watching these guys warm up you could see that they were very talented, very well coached and played the game hard. In a game that could have gone either way, Chardon eked out an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to steal a 3-2 victory and set the tone for a weekend that was to be filled with one run ball games. Nate Debick started the sixth with a booming double and eventually scored on a tough play error by the Thunderbirds third baseman. Clayton Burke pitched his second great game in a row. He changed speeds and walked only one man in holding the hard hitting Thunderbirds to just two runs. Phil Navatsyk had two hits and an rbi and Rodney Lewis added an rbi single but pitching and defense were the keys to this win. The second game of the weekend saw the Blizzard lose to the Ontario Phoenix in a rain shortened 4-1 loss. This game was lost in the first inning when some free bases (error, walk and wild pitches) led to three Phoenix runs. Ontario threw a Jamie Moyer like leftie who kept the boys off balance and kept the ball in play. It seemed like everything hit by Chardon was right at someone. Two inning ending double plays stopped scoring threats and when the rains came after the top of the fifth, the Blizzard was stuck with the loss. Game three was another one run, extra inning nail biter against the Lake County Warhawks. Rodney Lewis came on and pitched five innings of scoreless relief to get the win by a score of 4-3. Both teams had multiple opportunities to win this game but it seemed that whenever either team needed their pitcher to make a pitch or their defense to make a play, it happened. Finally, in the top of the eighth, Jake Stang hit a booming double over the center fielder's head to score Zac Campbell who was running for Frankie Varga. This win qualified the boys for the championship game against the Phoenix who also had two one run wins over the Warhawks and Thunderbirds. The championship game was all Andrew Ross as he mowed down the Phoenix for the first five innings using mostly four seam fastballs but mixing in a cut fastball and a two seamer to face the minimum through the first five and lead the Blizzard to a 5-0 victory. A single to center in the sixth broke up the no hitter. After two were out in the seventh, Andrew gave up two more hits but the game ended as Nate Debick made a leaping catch on a soft line drive to third. Again, the Blizzard hit ball after ball right on the nose in this one but always right at somebody. The result was that Chardon needed the almost perfect performance by Andrew. Jake Stang had three base hits. Rodney Lewis added two hits and an rbi and Matt Snowberger singled and drove in two runs. As coach Navatsyk told both teams as they were lined up along the first and third base line before the game, no trophies were being given out but this one was for bragging rights. So now we get to strut for at least a couple of days. Thanks to the Thunderbirds and Phoenix for coming south and making this an enjoyable, competitive weekend of baseball. These are two first class organizations whose kids play the game the right way. Saturday, June 9 Too Much Blizzard Chardon traveled to Lake Catholic to take on the Cougars of the GLBL school division and, as might be expected, swept a doubleheader by scores of 12-3 and 14-6. The Cougars competed hard in both games but they were just overmatched. The Blizzard pounded out 34 hits in scoring 26 runs in the two games. Chardon jumped out to early 10-0 leads in both games. Rodney Lewis went the distance in the first game. Nate Debick threw four innings of no hit ball in the second game. Zac Campbell came on and threw two innings of relief and Jimmy Lyons finished the second game on the mound for the Blizzard. Jake Stang banged out four doubles on the day. Matt Snowberger added five hits plus a number of other guys had a multi-hit game in one or both of the games. Tomorrow's another story as Chardon has a doubleheader against Ohio Thunder Select from the Diamond League. The goal is win both and go into the state championship tournament on a roll. Monday, June 11 It's A Funny Game After jumping out to an early 7-1 lead and winning the first game of a doubleheader by a score of 7-2, the Blizzard looked poised and ready to sweep the Ohio Thunder Select. Andrew Ross, who has had nothing but success since late March, including a 4-0 record with a 2.67 e.r.a. for the Chardon varsity this spring, was pitching the nightcap. Accordingly, the Blizzard was expecting to score a few runs and let Andrew do the rest. However, you can never take the game of baseball for granted. The Thunder scored ten runs in the first two innings with a couple of long home runs sandwiched around a number of "seeing eye" base hits plus a few uncharacteristic walks. The final result was a 14-5 pasting and a split of the doubleheader. In the first game, the first three hitters in the lineup (Phil Navatsyk, Matt Snowberger and Nate Debick) had two hits each in their first two at bats, one of which was a ringing double by Nate Debick. All six of these hits resulted in runs and Clayton Burke pitched six strong innings to make the thirteen hit Blizzard barrage stand up. Jake Stang drove in two more runs as he continues to be in a "zone" at the plate and Andrew Ross added a single and a double. Ryan Weed also singled and doubled. The second game got away early but Chardon kept battling back. Ryan Weed threw 5 1/3 innings of solid relief to keep the game within reach. On a number of occasions it looked like the boys might make a real run at closing the gap but numerous line drives hit right at people plus a few great defensive plays by the Thunder prevented any comeback effort by the Blizzard. Papa Varga went yard in this one over the 305 mark down the left field line. Clayton Burke hit a booming double and Phil Navatsyk singled and drove in two runs. But it was too little, too late as the hole was just too deep to climb out. This was a great day for baseball played by two very competitive teams on a beautiful sunny day at Walsh Jesuit high school. Thanks to the Thunder for hosting us and for providing hot dogs and drinks between games. Next up is the USSSA State Championship in Bowling Green. We open with the Ohio Heat, a great baseball team from Cincinnati whom some consider to be one of the top teams in the country. We'll have our work cut out for us. Friday, June 15 Blizzard Drops Opener In State Tourney For the first time since 2002, the Blizzard lost its first game in pool play in the USSSA State Championship tournament. The boys from Chardon are now in danger of not making it out of pool play for the first time since that same year. Facing a highly touted Ohio Heat team from Cincinnati, Chardon managed only one hit in a 5-0 loss. Andrew Ross deserved a better fate as he competed hard and worked his way out of several jams in holding the Heat to three runs through five innings. However, the failure of the Blizzard to hit the ball hard resulted in absolutely no pressure being put on the Heat. Phil Navatsyk walked twice and had the only Blizzard hit but even that ball was not hit very hard. There's no doubt that Chardon is in the toughest pool in the tournament with the revamped Ohio Hornets and Solon Patriots waiting in the wings. We've got to win the next two and keep the scores low in order to have any hope of getting out of pool play. Today's game is against the Hornets at BGSU's varsity stadium. It should be fun. Saturday, June 16 Still Alive The Blizzard kept their state championship hopes alive with a 5-2 win over a very good Ohio Hornets baseball team at beautiful Stellar Field in Bowling Green. Clayton Burke had another tremendous game as he changed speeds, made the Hornets put the ball in play and walked no one. Chardon fell behind 1-0 but finally scored their first runs of the tournament in the fourth inning when Jimmy Lyons walked to turn the lineup over, went to second on a balk, to third on a ground ball out and scored on a Matt Snowberger single. Matt then scored on a Nate Debick double and the whole complexion of the game changed. From that point on, it was the Blizzard exerting the pressure on offense and Clayton Burke making pitches with the Blizzard making all of the plays on defense. Nate Debick and Matt Snowberger continued to shine on the left side of the infield. Phil Navatsyk continued to play errorless ball at second base and Rodney Lewis made a great catch of a foul ball pop up at first base. Ross LaMarca played right field and made a couple of solid plays. Jimmy Lyons and Ryan Weed continued to do what they've done all season - catch everything in sight. Everyone contributed to this win as Chardon used pinch runners off the bench and every player seemed to be focused on every pitch. In the mean time, the Solon Patriots beat the Ohio Heat and now everyone in the pool is 1-1. Big game today against the Patriots. Saturday, June 16 Run Ruled The more you watch baseball, the more you come across a phrase used to explain certain happenings that are unique to the game. That phrase was heard repeatedly from umpires, other coaches watching the game and, finally, by coach Navatsyk himself in trying to explain a 9-1 run rule loss to the Solon Patriots which eliminated the Blizzard from the USSSA State Championship Tournament. "That's baseball" is all that you can sometimes say. Thursday, June 21 Chardon Rolls Over Bulldogs The Chardon Blizzard played their first home game of the year and run ruled the Geauga/Solon Bulldogs by a score of 12-2. Jack LaMarca threw four solid innings for the win and Clayton Burke came on and pitched a scoreless fifth inning. Jack also walked twice, doubled and scored three runs. Ryan Begun and Rodney Lewis hit back to back triples in a five run third inning. Everyone played in this one as the Bulldogs (a combination of last year's Josh's Jays and Solon Bulldogs) were just overmatched. Friday, June 22 Nice Win Playing without shortstop, Matt Snowberger, and first baseman, Clayton Burke, the Blizzard more than held their own in a 10-8 victory over the Lions Baseball Club 16's team. This game was a low scoring, pretty well pitched affair with Chardon on the short end of a 4-3 score going into the seventh inning. The Blizzard then erupted for seven runs on two walks, a single, a sac fly and five consecutive hits, two of which were doubles. It turned out that all of the runs were needed as three errors in the bottom of the seventh by guys playing out of position opened the door for four runs in a never say die comeback effort by the Lions. The Lions had the tying run on first when a hard ground ball to short ended the game. It took a while for Chardon's bats to get going in this one as the Lions' pitchers were a little quicker and had a little more command than alot of what we've seen so far this year. The Blizzard threw three different pitchers. Nate Debick picked up the win by allowing one earned run in the final two innings. Zac Campbell had a big two run single and Jake Stang added two more base hits as he continued his torrid hitting. Nate Debick had a single, a double and two runs scored. Phil Navatsyk added two rbi's and Rodney Lewis scored twice and drove in a run. All in all, this was a good team win against a well coached, quality program that always pays attention to the little details. Sunday, June 24 14 Wins The Blizzard got their fourteenth win of the season with an 8-2 victory over Lions Baseball Club. Although, the Blizzard played all right, they left ten men on base, a number of whom were on third with less than two outs and did not score. Six strikeouts by Chardon hitters plus the inability to elevate the ball over a drawn in infield kept the game close until the seventh when the Blizzard put three runs on the board to turn a 5-1 lead into an 8-1 lead. Our old friend Mitchell Herringshaw had three hits for the Lions, one of which was a booming triple to lead off the bottom of the first. Mitchell also made a number of very good plays at shortsop which kept Chardon from blowing this one wide open. Due to some injuries, the Lions were playing a little short handed but they hung tough for the whole game. Nate Debick banged out four consecutive singles, Ross LaMarca hit two booming doubles, Jack LaMarca had two hits and Phil Navatsyk had a screaming double to left center. Zac Campbell had another big two run double in the seventh to give Chardon some breathing room. Clayton Burke worked five innings without his best stuff but he competed hard and threw first pitch strikes to get the win. Rodney Lewis threw the final two innings to pick up a save. Next up are the Lions Club 16's who will probably be looking to get even after last week's loss. Monday, June 25 Nowhere To Run, Nowhere To Hide Well, the Blizzard made another trip to the den of the Lions Baseball Club for a rematch against the 16 year olds. Unfortunately, Chardon was like a gazelle on the Serengeti being tracked by a very hungry pride of lions. The result was a feast for the lions which didn't stop until every last piece of meat had been picked from the bones. In fact, they may have eaten some of the bones as well. After giving up three runs on two hits in the first inning, pitching behind in the count on almost every hitter for the entire game, booting almost every type of routine play that you could imagine, striking out seven times in five innings and managing to only hit the ball hard once in the entire game, Chardon left the Lions' den truly humbled and embarrassed by a score of 25-0. That's right, three touchdowns, a field goal and one two point conversion. One of the things that the coaches have tried to instill in our players is to never make fun of the other team or another player because there is always someone out there who is better than you. Tonight was probably a more vivid illustration of this life lesson than anyone really needed. The good news is that, unlike the gazelle, we get to play again on Wednesday. Thursday, June 28 Slumping? The Chardon Blizzard's record fell to 14-7 on Wednesday night with a 6-1 loss to the Ohio Hornets. For the second straight game, Chardon failed to hit the ball hard and to put it in play consistently. The question now is whether the team is in a slump or is it just the old baseball adage that good pitching beats good hitting coming into play. Facing the 6'5" Mr. Holland, who pitched varsity for Cuyahoga Falls high school as a freshmen, the boys managed only two hits and struck out ten times. Holland (who's been shaving since he was 10, or so it seems) was sharper than we've ever seen him as he had his off speed pitch around the plate to go along with his normally very good fast ball. This is a bad combination if you're a hitter. He walked no one. Saturday, June 30 Like Pulling Teeth All of a sudden watching the Blizzard offense is like a trip to the dentist's office. For the third time this week Chardon faced a big (6'3") right handed number one pitcher and for the second time they were shut out. In a game in which they outhit their opponent and played almost errorless baseball, the inability to get a timely hit plus an incredible fourteen strikeouts resulted in ten men being left on base and a 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Elite. This is a game that probably should have been won. Andrew Ross pitched very well and Chardon had plenty of scoring opportunities. The first inning was the story of the game. The Blizzard had runners on second and third with one out and failed to put the ball in play. Pittsburgh had runners on second and third with two out and fisted a bloop single to short left center just out of reach of the shortstop. The result was a 2-0 lead. As it turned out, this was all the Elite needed. This might have been the easiest of the four pool games. However, you won't win many games averaging two strikeouts an inning. Tomorrow brings a double header against what are probably the two best 15 year old teams in northeast Ohio - the Lake Erie Bulldogs and PB Baseball. We've got to keep battling and compete on every pitch. Monday, July 2 Another Bulldog Beat Down And Then A Much Needed Win The names and faces may change but the results always seem to be the same when the Blizzard plays the Lake Erie Bulldogs - a big time beat down. This time it was 16-0. Enough about that game. The good news is that the boys showed a great deal of character by coming back and winning the nightcap against a very solid PB Baseball team by the score of 8-7. After struggling to score any runs in the last four games and after having alot of weaknesses exposed in the Bulldog game, PB Baseball jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and it looked like it might be more of the same. It would have been very easy for the guys at this point to have said what in the world are we doing spending ten hours in Akron on a beautiful Sunday in July. Instead, they battled back, scored two in the bottom of the first and six in the second to take an 8-2 lead. They then hung on against a fast and furious PB comeback late in the game. The game ended with a controversial call at home plate and then a medium deep fly ball to center. With one out and the tying run on second base, PB's hitter lined a single to center and Jimmy Lyons made a perfect one hop throw to Papa Varga that beat the runner by several feet. It appeared that Papa did not catch it cleanly. When the umpire asked to see the ball, somehow out of a big cloud of dust and a pile of bodies, Papa raised it in the air and the runner was called out. Then, with runners on second and third, the next hitter flew to center field and the much needed victory was in the hopper. In the famous words of Jackie Gleason: "How sweet it is." Jake Stang had three hits in this one and he reached base on an error when he hit a shot at the PB third baseman. Phil Navatsyk added two hits and two walks to bring his tournament totals to 6 for 8 with two walks. Almost everyone else in the Blizzard lineup had at least one hit and everyone contributed in one way or another to the win. Ross LaMarca started the game and got it to the fifth inning by throwing strikes and making PB put it in play. Ryan Weed came on and got the save by throwing some strikes in critical situations. Our guys who haven't pitched much over the years are finding out that it's alot harder than some people make it look - especially when the pressure is on. This tournament can still be salvaged with wins on Monday and Tuesday. That would help erase the taste of the shutouts in the first two games - or at least cover it up with an Altoid. Let it snow!!! Tuesday, July 3 Freebie The Blizzard walked five batters in the first inning, gave up five runs on two hits and, in the process, gift wrapped an 8-3 victory for the Northern Ohio Hurricanes. In the mean time Northern Ohio gave away nothing. The main highlights in this one were a Ross LaMarca homerun to right center and two line drive doubles - one by Ross and one by, who else, Jake Stang. Rodney Lewis did a great job in relief by coming in, throwing strikes and keeping the game within reach but there's no way that you can spot a team like the Hurricanes five runs and expect to win. Back to the drawing board. Wednesday, July 4 Loss In Freedom Finale The Blizzard lost their Freedom Classic Finale to the Lake County Warhawks by a score of 7-5. Chardon used this game as an opportunity to make sure that some players who had not seen alot of playing time got on the field and to make sure that different pitchers got some work in. The Blizzard held a 5-4 lead going into the sixth inning but were unable to hold it when they gave up some free bases and then a couple of hits. The free base statistic has been a consistent negative for Chardon lately. As usually happens, the team that gave up the fewest free bases (walks, errors, steals, wild pitches to advance runners, etc.) won the game. Wednesday, July 18 Blizzard Loses 2 Of 3 The Blizzard lost two out of three games to two of the top teams in the Diamond League but very easily could have won all three. Chardon held leads late in all three games. They lost one in the top of the seventh and the other loss came in the bottom of the sixth. |
