The Cape Elizabeth Little League 9-10 year-old softball team swept the state tournament in Auburn, edging Calais 8-7 in the championship game played on August 2. 

To qualify for the state tournament, the fourteen-player squad first had to win the District Six tournament in early July. 

They started with a 12-7 victory over Falmouth, led by the pitching of Mary Perkins and some terrific outfield defense by Livia Chandler on June 30.  They dominated Portland North, 9-1, in their second game the next day, with Anna Goldstein going the distance, and then hung on for a tight 12-10 victory against a tough Yarmouth team on July 8 to advance to the winner’s bracket final. 

The Capers then turned in a "lights out" performance, scoring a 10-0 victory over the host team, South Portland National, on July 13.  Anna Goldstein allowed only two hits in earning the shut-out.  The same two teams then met again in the finals on July 17, where Cape captured the district championship by a score of 11-5, paced by the pitching of Mollie Thibodeau. 

In the round-robin state tournament in Auburn, the Capers won five games in five days against the champions of the other Maine districts to qualify for the championship game.  In game one, Anna Goldstein pitched Cape to a hard-fought 4-1 victory over Calais.  Cape scored three runs in the first, aided by a 2-RBI single from Elise Flathers, and then hung on with excellent pitching and defense, including a nice catch in left field by Alicia Davis to end a threat. 

In game two, Mary Perkins pitched well, striking our nine, while the Cape offense lit up Hermon with numerous extra base hits (including booming triples by Mary Perkins and Sydney Wight, and long doubles by Mollie Thibodeau, Katie Rabasca, and Emma O’Rourke) to produce a 12-2 victory in four innings.  Haley Bauman made the defensive play of the game by snaring Hermon's hardest hit ball in right field. 

In game three, Mollie Thibodeau pitched six excellent innings against host Auburn before she had to be lifted by rule with the game tied 3-3 at the end of regulation.  Her catcher, Elise Flathers, helped keep the game close by throwing out two runners attempting to steal third.  Anna Goldstein came on to pitch a shut-out top of the seventh.  Then Cape's younger players took over offensively, with Livia Chandler drawing a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the seventh, pinch runner Michaela Pinette stealing second, and Brooke Riddle ending it in dramatic "walk-off" fashion with a sharp game-winning single to center field. 

In game four, Cape earned a convincing 17-1 victory over Camden-Rockport.  The offense was firing on all cylinders again, with the biggest blast coming on Emma O'Rourke’s triple into the left field gap.  Anna Goldstein launched a long double, Elise Flathers went 3-for-3, and Alicia Davis laid down the prettiest bunt single of the tournament to spark the Cape offense.  Strong pitching from Anna Goldstein and Sydney Wight, plus solid team defense, kept Camden-Rockport at bay in their four at bats. 

In game five, Cape continued its run by defeating Wells-Ogunquit, 14-4.  Despite trailing 4-3 going into the sixth inning, the Capers exploded for eleven runs in their final at bat.  Right fielder Samantha Altznauer started the winning rally with a single; after a fly ball out, the next twelve batters reached base, pounding out eleven hits.  Mary Perkins went six innings for the win, allowing only two hits and striking out twelve, and she also collected 3 RBI at the plate.  Sydney Wight went 4-for-4, with two extra base hits and 4 RBI; Anna Goldstein had three hits; and Brooke Riddle was 2-for-2. 

In the championship, Cape (5-0) faced Calais (3-2) in a rematch of the opening game.  Calais took a surprising 6-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, with its first six hitters all scoring, then stretched its lead to 7-2 after two innings.  The Cape comeback began with a 3-run fourth inning rally sparked by Aubrey O'Meara (a gritty 9-pitch at bat to earn a walk, followed by a stolen base), Alicia Davis (walk and stolen base), and Michaela Pinette (RBI single, stolen base, and scored on a wild pitch).  Cape then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Anna Goldstein led off with an opposite field double and scored on a long triple to center field by Sydney Wight.  After Mary Perkins reached on an infield error and stole second, Emma O'Rourke produced an infield grounder that allowed both base runners to score with the tying and go-ahead runs in a display of aggressive base running.  Winning pitcher Mollie Thibodeau, who struck out six opposing hitters, completed the victory with a scoreless top of the sixth and recorded the final out by snaring a line drive up the middle. 

Following the big win, the entire team and their families and supporters enjoyed a joyful fire department escort into town! Cape finished the tournament season with a perfect 11-0 record. 

Manager Scott Perkins and Coaches Joe Guerette and Steve Rabasca did a terrific job guiding the girls to victory.  The participants were:  Brooke Riddle (OF), Mary Perkins (P/SS), Elise Flathers (C), Anna Goldstein (P/1B), Livia Chandler (OF), Michaela Pinette (OF), Alicia Davis (OF), Samantha Altznauer (OF), Aubrey O’Meara (OF/2B), Haley Bauman (OF), Katie Rabasca (OF/2B), Emma O’Rourke (3B), Mollie Thibodeau (P/ 1B/ SS), and Sydney Wight (2B), who replaced original team member Megan Hallowell (OF) part way through the District Six Tournament.
