State Cup Notes

Riptide - congratulations on your games this weekend...You have put yourself in a position to play for the state championship.  As the number three seed - you know that those other two teams thought that you would be an easy win for them.  Coach Craig and I always tell you to never under estimate your opponents - right!  Bad news moving forward - you are now on everyones radar - finish this journey and become state champions - and teams will be looking to play you to prove how good they are!  But I am getting ahead of myself....

Our fate is still dependant on the out come of the Hockessin and Kirkwood game Thursday but I like our chances. The game on Saturday was a treat to watch - it is too bad somebody had to lose - but as we have discussed - a 1 - 0 loss is better than a 2 - 0 etc because of the tie breakers - which if KSC beats HSC on Thursday - we will be working through to see who moves on.The way I see it now - as soon as HSC scores a goal - we are in.If it is a tie - we are in.If KSC wins by 3 goals or more we are in.If HSC wins - we are in...The only thing I can see as an issue is if KSC wins 1 - 0 or 2 - 0.  Then I think the tie breakers are involved and we may even have a playoff game.I will tell all of you I am so proud of you this weekend - I know that playing time has been a challenge for some of you, and while our policy is always to develop players and give everyone as much opportunity as possible - we have always said that this tournament woudl be treated a bit differently,  I assure you that we will get back to our traditional program in the MSSL tournament memorial day weekend. As I have said leading up to State Cup - every single one of you has made a great contribution to the progress, that you should not measure your contribution to this effort by the minutes you play in this tournament but the final results of your team.Regardless of the out come on Thursday - you should all feel proud of yourself and your team mates, You have come a long way in four short years - but please remember, the journey is not over yet! Hopefully we will see you at Kirkwood Thursday night for the game...

Journal Work Due for Hockessin game

Players - something a little different for this homework.

Because we did so many different things in the Hockessin game here is what I want to know from your journal.

I still want to know what you feel you did well and what you think you need to work on.

But I also want to know how did moving people around and changing our formation affect you if at all.   Was it easy?  Were you confused?  Did it make your speed of play faster?  Slower?  Let me know..   Due Saturday at State Cup.

Thanks

Meet the Trainer
gc

Georgie Crowley Georgie comes to us from England: A member of the West Ham Ladies FC  In addition to playing in Europe, Georgia also has a National Diploma in Sports Fitness and Development, A level 2 Coaching License, Level 1 Coaching License for Disabled Footballers, Level Two license for treatment & management of injuries, and Level 1 certification in Sports Leadership.

Age: 19Hometown: Harlow, England

Licenses: Level 2, Level 2 - Treatment and management of injuries, Level 1 - Sports Leadership, and Level 1 - Coaching Disabled Footballers

Favorite Team: Arsenal Favorite Player: Rachel Yankey (Arsenal Ladies FC), Freddie Ljungberg (Seattle Sounders FC)  Best Soccer Moment: I was the first female to play amongst the men after the FA passed the rule allowing it.  It was in my hometown where we played a charity match for the Tsunami cause.  That is also the game I was scouted for by Arsenal Ladies FC. What do you hope to bring to the Diablo’s players: I want to share my experiences I have had and help them learn through them.  Also, now with the WPS in place there is something for the girls to strive towards as a goal in soccer and I hope to help them on that journey. What is your coaching philosophy: I enjoying making the game fun but also an educational experience.  I want players to want to come to practice because they enjoy it, but also because they are getting a lot of knowledge from what I am teaching them. What is your pre-game routine:  Night before a game: I like to get my mind focused on the game by relaxing and playing the game in my head, and if possible sit in a Jacuzzi for a little bit and help loosen up my muscles.  For dinner, I would usually eat a chicken and pasta dish and drink lots of water. Game day: For breakfast I have a slice of toast, a banana, and an energy drink.  Then in the changing rooms prior to kick off all the player would pass around Jelly Babies and Jaffa Cakes as they are a good energy source to help us keep going on the field.  Afterwards, I drink lots of water to replenish the fluids lost during the game.

State Cup Draw
Riptide, I went to the DYSA meeting last night to watch the state cup draw...  Looks like we only have three teams in our age group going for state cup..   Hockessin Lady Hawks, Kirkwood Blue Ice, and the CDSA Riptide....      Because our age group has the wild card - two of us will be going... unfortunately one of the three teams will not be able to go.  We need to work as hard as we can over the next 6 weeks to make sure that we are not the team that is not attending....  I'm not going to say "good luck" because I fell that if you believe in your self, work hard and hustle you will make your good luck and you will be successful - so “believe you can do it”, make sure we work as hard as we can as a team to reach our goal...  we push each other to be better, encourage each other, make each other better players – make Riptide the best team in our age group in the state!  Give it 100% and regardless of the final score – you will all be winners…  Coach Craig and I know that you can do…  Coach Mark

Weather Alert - Practice Plan for this week
In an effort to give everyone enough lead time I want us to follow the current plan – if it is in fact raining all day we will then move our practice from Wednesday night to Friday night…We will keep the start time at 6pm and run until about 8pm…   The plan for Friday is to use the same field at Schutte Park that we are normally work on during our Saturday morning sessions  (I think it is  #5)  by the Pitts Center.… If by some miracle we all wake up tomorrow and the sun is shinning we can stick with the original practice schedule of tomorrow night at Schutte Park on the lower field (#1) behind the softball fields

Again - if it rains like it did today – we are practicing on Friday….

Sunday Game - 4_5_09
Riptide – congratulations on a very nice 5 – 2 victory today..  Coach Craig and I were pleased with the progress on communication and possession.I though we saw better ball movement today and I like some of the aggressive play from out side the 18.  Your support for each other particularly in the second half was awesome!  We will continue to work on possession in combination with attacking the goal and efficient (and effective) Communication, but I also want to go back and revisit our defensive shape a bit – Coach Craig and I feel like we lost our shape and became a bit undisciplined at a few critical points and it lead directly to one goal and almost cost us a second one.    The most impressive thing to me was how you bounced back from the two to one deficit – and when you tied the game at half I really felt confident that you would be able to get the win..  You really looked like you wanted to win at the half – more important – I think you really believed in yourselves… Keep working harder each practice – are biggest test are yet to come in a few short weeks…  See you Wednesday….

This morning’s training is still on – and we have some additional good news. We will have Georgia back today but joining her for today’s session is Stuart Gore. Stuart’s soccer career has had him playing in the UK, Spain, and the US  Here are a few details about Stuart, a very busy young man…. He has a UEFA B Coaching License. He is a former youth player with the famed FA National School of Excellence at Lilleshall UKIn The UK Stuart also played on the youth team for Leeds United, a pro club in the UK. Stuart attended and played at Cumberland University ( NAIA )

YPSL Info (email from 3/07/09)
Parents  / Coaches:I have talked to some of you at one time or another about the opportunity to participate in the YPSL this summer.  I have talked to some coaches around the state about the idea of pulling players from around the state together to participate in the league.  Unfortunately it will directly conflict with ODP so it would be very very difficult (not too mention expensive) to do if you are in the ODP program.I have had children play in both the ODP and YPSL program and each has great merit, and areas that they are less developed.   Below is info regarding the opportunity:  And information on what it is cost and thoughts.  Please let me know if you are interested. What is the YPSL OpportunityThe Youth Premier Soccer League is a high quality regional league, providing top-level competition for elite players across the north-eastern United States.Multiple games are played over competition weekends at central venues through the summer. This format enables more playing opportunities per weekend, without expensive tournament costs. The league offers top quality soccer through the summer season, supporting player development within genuinely regional competition, while minimizing travel and accommodation costs. The concept of the YPSL is to provide the best possible opportunity for high level competition without prohibitive financial or time barriers, and giving players and parents a better scheduled weekend of soccer. In 2009, the league will have two conferences, the North Atlantic Conference covering New England and upstate New York, and the Mid-Atlantic Conference covering Metro-New York to Virginia. The YPSL is sanctioned by US Club Soccer, which - through its 'id2' program - provides standout players the chance to be identified and given further development opportunities at the national level. Unlike ODP, parents do not have to assume the expense of multiple costly tryout camps to ensure their players are seen by id2 scouts. id2 identifies players regardless of their affiliation, and in their own environment as they compete with their club teams. The YPSL runs from mid-June to the last weekend of July so as not to clash with clubs' spring seasons, while offer players continued development opportunities during the summer. Program Includes Player Uniforms / training 2 nights a week / 4 regional tournaments / play a 5th tournament on august 1-2 if you make playoffs. Total Cost is $550 for the entire program The two options of payment are as follows, one lump sum that covers the whole season or a payment plan that is explained below. 1st Payment = $100 (non-refundable) with acceptance to the program 2nd Payment = $150 to be paid no later than March 15th3rd Payment = $150 to be paid no later than April 15th4th Payment = $150 to be paid no later than May 15th Locations for tournaments are not finalized but the dates of the game weekends are as follows:Weekend         Date1          June 27-28    2          July 11-12     3          July 18-19    4          July 25-26    5          August 1-2   Finals Weekend  (must qualify for finals) In a perfect world practices would be held someplace central – I.E. Newark / Middletown / Kirkwood areas for everyone’s convenience.Spaces will be limited and I am not sure how the selection process will go – lets see if there is enough interest in the program first. Here is the link to the web site:  http://www.youthpremiersoccerleague.com

The Lakeshore u-12 AA girls won their semi-final game 2-1 against Gatineau at Sunnybrook Park Saturday morning in Dollard. Chronicle, Eric Carrier Lakeshore u-12 AA girls perfect so far Squad one of several playing for titles Michael Piasetzki The Lac St. Louis Youth League’s A and AA inter-city soccer playoffs will come to a conclusion this Saturday with finals on different levels taking place in Dorval, Ile Bizard and Lachine.

For some clubs that have qualified to play for titles, the successful run in the playoffs have come as a second blessing, salvaging what was perhaps not such a sweet regular season. For others, a trip to the championship match is a mere continuation to what has been a splendid campaign from start to finish.

Several teams definitely fit into the latter category, including the Lakeshore under-12 AA girls’ side, which along with the Lakeshore u-13 AA girls and u-18 AA boys went undefeated during the regular season. For the u-12 AA girls though, what made this season so special – it finished with a 14-0 record, giving up only two goals while scoring 49 and has qualified to play in Saturday’s final against Pierrefonds in Dorval– was the fact it was the second consecutive season it had run the table without losing a match. It was the only undefeated team in the Lac St. Louis region in all age categories last season.

“This is a committed group,” said Lakeshore u-12 AA girls’ assistant coach Christian de Saint-Rome. “There is talent among them as well, and they’ve been working hard for a long time, playing in many outside tournaments. Some have been around for the past five years. When you have dedication combined with talent, the results are going to be positive.”

Speaking of tournaments, one member of the Lakeshore u-12 AA girls’ side found herself in France recently, away from her Lakeshore teammates, representing her country instead. Isabella Corbeil was one of three girls on an all-boys’ Canadian squad that finished 20th at the Danone Nations Cup, a World Cup style tournament held in Paris that draws many of the finest u-12 players from around the globe.

“I think our team played really well but could have done better if we weren't in such a strong pool with Russia and France,” said Corbeil, a Hudson resident who is one of four out-of-region players on the Lakeshore squad. “Personally, I learned to play really fast, to be quicker to shoot and not to wait for the ball.”

Besides Corbeil and her Lakeshore teammates, another squad that has qualified to play in for the title this Saturday is the boys’u-14 A Notre Dame de l’Île Perrot (NDIP) side, which faces St. Laurent in Lachine.

“Ours is a young club with a brief intercity history,” said Notre Dame de l’Île Perrot head coach Neil Sellors. “When we entered the league we quickly found out who the big clubs were and what we up against. Some clubs have as many as five times as many kids playing soccer than NDIP. They are usually the powerhouses of the league, but we have shown that any club can win.”

Important Training Notes (email from 2/9/09)
Good evening parents – below is an update on training and our upcoming schedule. Training:            I like the way coach Mario is working with the girls – they are getting a great opportunity to see how a few simple touches can drastically improve their technical ability.            If they only spend 15 to 30 minutes a day at home working on these movements you will see drastic improvement in their ability and speed of play.            Coach Mario’s preparation and training sessions have been very good, and the effort in the gym by the girls is good. ResponsibilityOne thing that I need to make you aware of and that I am going to ask for your understanding on is the following.  Every practice I tell the girls to wear their red practice jersey’s and I notify them when they need to bring journals, or what homework is due.  I constantly send out e-mail reminders and even post it on the web. Yet every practice we will have a few players who show up not wearing a practice jersey or who have forgotten their home work/Journals. Up until now I have not taken any action and let them slide.   From this point forward – any player who does not come dressed accordingly or forgets homework/journal – they will be required to stay after practice and run.   No excuses.  If for some reason a player does not have their red practice jersey – it is easy to get a new red T –shirt. Schedule            I will confirm our scrimmage on Wednesday for Saturday morning.  Weather looks ok right now the rain is out of the forecast.  It will be chilly so make sure they all dress warm – red uniforms.            We will not have training Saturday night – A very Happy Valentines everyone            We have to reschedule the 2/21 scrimmage due to conflicts – but we will have foot skills training in the morning – I will post  time and location on the web site by end of day next Monday 2/16.            We have the YMS tournament on 2/28  - We will not have in-door training that day unless the tournament is cancelled.  Have a great week everyone and thanks for your help… Coach Mark

Tonights Training (email 1/24/09)
First I’d like to say how proud I am of the girls tonight… They are as tough as they are dedicated…  When we pulled together at the end of the short session – I told them that tonight was a good life lesson – not just for soccer…They will have challenges in sports, in school, and in life – it is important not to just give up – it is important to look to make the best of every situation and that is exactly what they did today! Most of the girls received there journals tonight with 2 pages of nutritional information and a page of dress and behavior requirements. It is important that the girls look it over – Coach Mario will be talking about them next week.  I expect that everyone will be familiar with them.  If you did not pick them up tonight at practice – please reach out to a team mate for a copy during the week. See you Saturday… Coach Mark

We have a home and home scrimmage session set up with SCCA (a club form PA).

The first game will be in Dover on Saturday January 17 – I am hoping to get Del State Turf or possibly Wesley’s Turf if available – start time will be 11:30 am and end at 1:00pm.  The second half of the home and home will be at there facility on February 14th again at 11:30am and ending at 1:00pm.

I am currently talking to Coach Pat from NJ about a play day with his U12 girls for late January or some time in February – they should be a very stiff challenge for us.

More to follow in a few days…..

WINTER TRAINING UPDATE_01_06_09 at 10:18 pm
