WE WIN!!! 2009 AAA State Champions UNDEFEATED Central Dauphin Rams

Lance Johnson had the winning block, Taylor Gaston: career high 18 kills vs. PH

Multi Sports Complex State College, PA May 30th 2009- The Central Dauphin Rams captured the program's first STATE TITLE on Saturday by out lasting #1 in the state North Allegheny Tigers 3-2 (15-13 in the 5th) in the semi finals before downing #2 in the state Penn Hills 3-2 (15-13 in the 5th).

Here is a recap on the weekend for the STATE CHAMPION RAMS:
Pool Play Friday
Freedom 3-0
Latrobe 2-1
Penn Hills 2-1
3-0 in Match play, 1st in Pool

The Rams won all three matches in pool play but not before some tense moments in the opening match vs. Freedom, the D11 champs.  CD won game one going way but the Patriots came out strong and hung with the Rams until the very last points of the deciding game two.  CD pulled ahead by one when a huge hit from the Freedom OH was dug by Taylor Gaston (Sr, OH) who then terminated the set from Connor Ecklund (Sr, S) to give the Rams the match.

CD then rolled Latrobe in the first two games to gain another match win setting up a showdown with #2 in the state Penn Hills who was also 2-0 after the first two rounds.

The Rams dominated Penn Hills at every turn of the pool play winning the first two games to gain the #1 seed to the semi finals on Saturday.

Semi Finals Saturday
CD over North Allegheny 3-2

The North Allegeheny semi final clash at states will live in my memory as on the best matches I have ever been involved with.  We won game one going away and had a game point in game two that saw a Gaston block fall just out before the Tigers won the game to tie the match at 1-1.  NA then went on dominate game three 25-13 and it was looking bleak for the Rams.  However for first time all season CD rolled its lined up to try to match what NA was doing and it proved successful as the Rams survived game 4 25-20 setting up a classic show down for the 5th game and the right to play for the title.

Many thanks to assistant Coach Paul Kilmer who hit it right on the nose with setting the line up for the deciding game, we ended up the same match up as game 4 and that knowledge carried the Rams to the victory.  A double contact by the Tigers at 14-13 gave the Rams the match for the ages.  "All I could think about was it was going to be ashame that some one had to lose this match" said Coach JB after it was over.  "I knew NA was going to be our nightmare match up because they are just like us, very balanced and they almost ended our season".

State Finals Saturday
CD over Penn Hills 3-2

What a match.  The 5th game is what everyone was talking about tonight at our reception.  We were down 11-13 when Aaron Kerschener (Jr, OH) went back to serve.  His aggressive float serve took Penn Hills out of their O allowing the Rams to run off three straight points to reach match point at 14-13.  Aaron's state title winning serve was a tough one and Penn Hills ran a shoot to their out side hitter, #9 Sparks that Lance Johnson (Jr, MB) was ready for.  Lance stuck up his big paw to send the ball back into the PH side of the court and the ball deflected off of a PH defender over their bench to give the Rams the STATE TITLE.

#13 from Penn Hills was dominated against CD, running 27+ kills against the Rams and he was one rotation from coming back to the front row when the Rams got the final point of the match.

"After things settled down I checked the stats today and Taylor Gaston (Sr, OH) had a career high 18 kills in the state final" said Coach JB.  "That is a testimate to the players on our team this year that picked the final weekend to play their best ball of the season, we needed it to win for sure".

The Rams complete the season as the undefeated Mid Penn, District Three, and AAA State Champions!!!  29-0 on the season for the perfect Rams as they complete the perfect season at State College as the State Champions.
