Perfection!!!
2002TrophyCloseup
The 2002 Spring Season started with some major obstacles to overcome before even hitting the field. One, how do you replace Stefani, Jannette, Julie, Heather, Don, and Mike? And two, how long will it take to gel? Even in 2000, we only added 4 newbies to the roster...we were talking at least 6 for this spring. Calls were made and we remedied obstacle one with the additions of Kevin, Susan, Shannon, Diane, Russ, and a "full-time" Ashley. The talks and emails with Kevin pretty much went like..."Who do ya want?"..."the pitcher...an outfielder"..."if you get one, you get the other"..."ok, lets do it"... Now the task at hand was to get the "meshing" happening. As it turned out, the schedule worked out to our benefit as we had some "cake" games the first 3 weeks to get the bonding going. We breezed through the Life Savers and Hambillies and then annihilated Too Deep in week 3. The 6-0 start helped the transition period along, but the real "clicking" was happening after the games at the Pub. The group was bigger and the laughs were certainly harder. By the time the old rivals came up in the schedule, the 2 teams that merged was now one. As each rival came up on the schedule, they were set back down with solid, consistent defense and timely hitting. The Posse, Dirt Monkeys, Wild Dogs---here they came, down they went. Tim joined us for a couple of those weeks and didn't the Pub outings get even more livelier with Tim "in-da-howse"??? And Tim, the "E-I-E-I-O" poke at my Terps was not that funny. But, did we not get to know Shannon just that much better? Funny how a couple of hours can make people the best of friends---at least for a few singles or was it the twenty? Double Deez, Barbie, and a 12-n-oh start right from the blocks---we were rolling. "Heavy D" and the also undefeated RSIS team were up next for first place and the battle of the unbeatens and well, they were humbled in the end. A couple forfeits from Mixed Nuts and only the annoying Seahorses and their "4-corners" approach to playing the game stood in the way of an undefeated season...they truly are the "SLOW" in slow pitch softball. With perhaps a little bit of knowing that the league championship was already ours, we played their type of ball and they gave us the best scare of the season in that first game. But when it all kicked in, we proceeded to kick their a$$ and just take the whole damn thing without a single blemish in the loss column... 18 and zippy and LEAGUE CHAMPIONS...

Top seed and undefeated. The others were gunning for us, the Dogs, the Butt Monkeys---they wanted revenge. And I was bitter being in Frisco to miss it all. Tim and Deb joined the tourney team and though it was the road less travelled, 2 games and 4 wins, no one can take away the fact that we put ourselves in the position to benefit from the other's mishaps. Let 'em b1tch, they should've done better in all their other games to get a higher seed. KLong got to pitch to the Monkeys---see ya. Wild Dogs---you weren't going to get Deb this time around, plan better next time. And here came those damn Seahorses again for yet another championship. Apparently, you guys didn't stress it too much. Although I heard that John felt a little bit of "love" at home. Tim "aced" in the championship and threw the shutout. I am really digging this pitching rotation thing...and then there was Sooz warming in the bullpen. How satisfying can that be?!?! And in the July heat, we were crowned TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS...there was certainly no reason to break up the 2002 Trophy Set. Congrats, wire-to-wire perfection, 22 and 0. It can't be done any better...

Off-the-field news started with Lisa's engagement announcement...need we relive Keith's embarassing moment---yeah, yeah, which one... We can definitely get a bat mounted for you too, Lisa. Heather gave birth to a baby boy on August 9th. And lastly, we said our goodbyes to Glen, our fearless, yet dangerous field general. It's great that we sent him off with this undefeated season. It was only fitting that his last year end as his first season in 99 started...perfect. And speaking of points to ponder...ironically, the last time we lost a game was in the 2001 spring tournament to a team led by the merry quartet of Kevin, Shannon, Diane, and a hobbling Susan. And look at us all now, a merry band of many. With all of the success this season and the many moments of side splitting laughter, we should pay a little tribute, blow-a-little-sunshine, like we did with those high school superlatives:

**Cutest Couple: Mark and Shari (although Ashley and the umpire was a close second)
**Most Likely to Miss the Target at the Baseball Dunk Tank: Keith (High and to the right)
**Most Likely to Break the Target: Glen (then it would bounce off and hit a few other people in their cars)
**Most Likely to Pose for a Picture as She Hit the Target: Susan (Vogue, vogue)
**Most Likely to Pirouette and Nail the Target: Shari (...the spin, the throw, money)
**Most Likely to Give You Grief While Sitting in the Tank: Diane ("What, you want a piece of me?")
**Most Likely to "Ooomph" The Target Down: Monica (better yet, MOANica)
**Most Likely to "Work" You Into Paying More for those 3 Balls: Shannon ("No more single's please.")
**Most Likely to Have A Date for the Prom: Lisa (Benefits of being engaged...)
**Most Likely to Have Travelled Across State Lines to Get to the Prom: Tim (Hitching on Delta or American)
**Most Likely to Not Go to the Prom: Russ (Hasn't been to the Pub yet)
**Most Likely to Not Go to the Prom due to Soccer Practice: Stef
**Most Likely to Have Forgotten about the Prom: Kevin (especially if its on a Sunday)
**Most Likely to Have All The Old Teachers Chaperoning Going Gah-Gah: Ashley (What inning is it...again?)
**Most Likely to Go With You, Leave with You but Go Play Elsewhere: Deb (the Dogs doubleheader, need I say more?)
**Most Likely to Show Off a New Dance at the Prom: Mark ("Right here blue"...hop, hop)
**Most Likely to Make Fun of Mark: John
**Most Likely to Approach all the Gals at the Prom: John ("Did you play ever play with Barbie?")
**And Most Likely to Make a Baseball Dunk and Prom Happen and then Write All About It: Me

Great Season...
