Fall 2002 - A Quiet Championship...
The Fall 2002 season had a lot of ups and downs. Off the field, much of the season was focused on the safety of the whole metro area as the sniper duo compromised a lot of our day-to-day living. The rain then played a major part of delaying the season well into Thanksgiving week and even then, it was 4 weeks since the last time we had set foot on the field. It proved to be a test of our patience and anxiety to finish the season out.
With the departure of Glen and Lisa, the team set out to stack the roster with even more talent. We added Ray Flores and Jeff Suttell, with Jeff Ford and Dave Levins on an on-call basis. On the female side, we welcomed Jennifer Dameron, Mindy Nash, Deb Snyder and Joy Satterfield. Again, we had to go through another "get-to-know-you" period, but the dug-out bantering did not miss a beat. On the field, we suffered the first loss "blemish" in over 40 games as the team was swept by an inspired Seahorses team on that memoriam day of 9/11. The "lull" lasted one more week as the Monkeys got some sort of payback in splitting the doubleheader to avenge the spring's sweep during the season and in the tourney. The ship was then "righted" as we pounced and pounded on the opponents to come, to include RSIS and the rematch with the Smashers. How good was it to see Tim back in action!?!?! Get off me ball!!!
That proved to be our last day in the field as the rains came in on consecutive Wednesdays to follow; pushing the season back into November. The make-up opponents proved to be unwilling to play the season out and forfeited the remaining games. With that, we laid claim to a share of the league championship with the Monkeys. Oh how, the Seahorses losses hurt! Nonetheless, we moved past the losses, built the unity, and started a new streak. Fifteen and three ain't so bad...not when it comes with a trophy. Congratulations to all!!!
