Home of the Johnstown Warriors.....

War Memorial Arena

The Cambria County War Memorial Arena, opened in 1940, has been the lifelong home of the Johnstown Warriors.  With a seating capacity of 4,050, the arena has served home to the Blue-Birds, Jets, Red Wings, and Chiefs professional minor-league teams.  The arena has become a landmark throughout the hockey community, as Hollywood featured the War Memorial in the 1978 film Slap Shot; a cult classic starring Paul Newman.  Today, the arena is the home of the Johnstown Chiefs of the East Coast Hockey League, a minor league affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Boston Bruins along with the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters and Providence Bruins.

Along with hockey, the War Memorial hosts other events such as the Harlem Globtrotters, World Wrestling Entertainment, and concerts from such likes as Def Leppard, Kid Rock, 3 Doors Down and Matchbox 20.  The arena has just undergone a major renovation project costing $8 million that was completed in 2003.  A new ice plant and boiler system were installed prior the 2001-2002 season. Other items in the project include roof repairs, new arena sound and lighting, new dasher boards and glass, new seating, luxury boxes, addition of storage and office space, and repairs to the concourse, restrooms and concession stands.
