CCL History
In the mid 1960’s several men in the county decided that a youth recreational football program was needed to produce knowledgeable players to feed into area High School Football programs.
At that time, ages were set and school boundaries were established.

Not to be outdone by the men, several ladies in the county decided there was a need for a recreational cheerleading program. Chesterfield Cheerleading League was formed as a division of Chesterfield Quarterback League and governed by the rules and regulations of CQL.

For several years cheerleaders just cheered at football games. During the early 1970’s, additional elementary schools were built in the county due to the increased population and each school formed an athletic association. At that time CCL wanted to expand its program to include a yearly competition between the Northern and Southern Cheerleading Squads, and to have Instructional Camps for the cheerleaders. Since CQL had no rules for these things and CCL could see that rules governing safety and participation were needed, CCL decided that it needed to form an independent organization.

From that beginning with 7 or 8 Associations participating in our camps and competitions, we have grown to 32 member Associations in 2006. We added a program for basketball cheerleaders in the late 1980’s along with a program for flag aged cheerleaders. Our camps held the first week-end in August of each year have approx. 600 cheerleaders participating. We also hold a “mini” camp on the last Saturday of July for flag cheerleaders.

In 2005, seventy-two cheering squads from within the county (and Powhatan) participated in the CCL Spectacular. Each year we hold a Flag Exposition so the young ladies participating in that age group will have the opportunity to Sparkle and Shine. We do not have competition at that age because we feel there will be many years for competitions as they get older.

We are very proud of the fact that participation in CCL is the least expensive of all the sports leagues in the county. We generate funds for our programs from entry and spectator fees at our Spectacular.
The League provides all the insurance for the cheerleaders.
We also award $4,000.00 in scholarships each year to county high school seniors who have participated in the league as a youth.

These volunteers do every thing from driving the cheerleaders to practices and games to washing uniforms if needed. They deserve a big Thank You for their devotion to the youth of our county. The following is a great summary of why these sponsors and coaches “do what they do”. The time we give to benefit the youth of our county Can not be measured in terms of wages, but Can be rewarding when you witness the Development of Character.
