Varsity Ice Hockey

Sponsored by Christian Brothers Academy of Albany, NY.
Mr. James Schlegel is the principal of the grade 6-12 all-male school

Hockey coach Blaine Drescher is CBA's new Athletic Director. Drescher recently received a Masters of Science degree in Sports Management from SUNY Cortland where he was student assistant coach on the hockey team under head coach Joe Baldarotta. He has also held a number of other coaching positions, including assistant varsity baseball and hockey coach at CBA and for North Colonie Youth Baseball league. In addition to taking on the responsibilities of Athletic Director, Drescher will serve as head coach for the CBA varsity hockey team. While a student at CBA, Drescher played varsity soccer, hockey and baseball. His name sits on top of the Brothers’ all time leader board for points and assists in hockey. Having the opportunity to play for CBA coach Dave Doemel and to intern last year under Doemel's leadership as a part of the Sports Management curriculum for his Masters degree, Drescher says he was inspired to strive for the same level of dedication and passion that Coach Doemel has in order to make CBA the best it can be.

Swanteck delivers

Christian Brothers Academy hockey player Zach Swanteck forced overtime on a goal with 7.7 seconds left in a 3-3 tie with Shenendehowa last Friday, and provided the game-winner the next night with 2:10 to go in a 1-0 triumph against LaSalle.
Swanteck, a senior forward, tipped in a shot by Grant Stockman in the La Salle game. Goaltender Kyle Stockman made 12 saves for the shutout.

CBA ruins victory dance

CLIFTON PARK– The celebration started in the closing seconds at Clifton Park Arena. A portion of smiling Shenendehowa students clad in green filed out of the stands, while those who remained sang the song of victory.

Someone forgot to tell Christian Brothers Academy that the hockey game was over.

Zach Swanteck's goal with 7.7 seconds left capped a CBA rally as the Brothers battled back to salvage a 3-3 tie Friday night against a Shen team that came into the game riding a four-game win streak.

The outcome looked bleak for CBA (6-5-2, 5-2-1) with a faceoff in its own zone and 13 seconds left in regulation. But the Brothers got the puck up the ice, and John Bassett's lunging pass to Swanteck turned into the equalizer.

"I've been a part of a lot of CBA hockey teams that have come into this building with the tradition of Shenendehowa hockey, you've got the students in your ear," CBA coach Blaine Drescher said. "We just kept fighting. I think half the people were in the parking lot, and we just kept battling."

Bassett dedicated to sport he loves

  John Bassett

COLONIE — When asked what John Bassett's biggest asset was as a hockey player, first-year Christian Brothers Academy coach Blaine Drescher noted Bassett's dedication to the sport.

Drescher gets a weekly reminder of Bassett's dedication when, instead of sleeping in on Saturday mornings, Drescher attends the Bassett-inspired weightlifting sessions at 7 a.m. as a team-building exercise for the team.

"That is the last thing I want to do is to wake up early and go to the weight room and it's the last thing he wants to do," Drescher said. "But, I'll do it because I know how important it is to him."

On the ice, Bassett, a senior defenseman, specializes in tormenting opposing goaltenders while providing CBA with a steady defensive presence on the blue line.

After leading all Section II defensemen in scoring with 15 goals last season, Bassett's ability to find the back of the net is once again evident as he ranks second overall in the league with nine goals in just nine games through Saturday.

Bassett, who has four assists so far this season, began skating at an early age and picked up his scoring touch while playing forward as a youth before switching to defense in high school.

CBA advances to finals of Shaker tournament

By Rob Jonas/Spotlight Newspapers

 — Christian Brothers Academy and Mamaroneck advanced to Saturday's final at the Albany County Holiday Hockey Tournament at the county rink in Colonie.

CBA tied Shaker/Colonie 4-4 and advanced on penalty shots in its opening-round game Friday, while Mamaroneck edged Bethlehem in overtime 5-4.

CBA (0-0-1) took a 3-1 lead on second-period goals by John Bassett, Liam Glennon and Zach Swanteck, but Mike Minneau tallied with seven seconds left in the period to get S/C (0-0-1) close. Sean Phillips scored less than one minute into the third period to pull the Jets even at 3-3.

Chase Crawford's goal with 10:52 left in the third period put CBA back in front before Minneau struck for his third marker of the game with 34 seconds left in regulation for S/C. The two teams played a scoreless overtime period, which led to penalty shots. The Brothers outscored the Jets 5-4 to advance.

In the finals:

 — Once Trey Herlitz-Ferguson got on track, there was nothing Christian Brothers Academy could do to stop him.

The senior forward recorded a hat trick to lead Mamaroneck to a 7-5 victory over the Brothers in the finals of the Shaker/Colonie Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament Saturday at the Albany County Hockey Facility.

Herlitz-Ferguson scored twice in a 34-second stretch of the first period to give the Tigers (2-0-0) a 2-1 lead, and he added his third goal midway through the second period to put Mamaroneck ahead 4-2.

“We didn’t have an answer for him all (day),” said CBA coach Blaine Drescher. “He really made us chase him in our defensive zone.”

CBA (0-1-1) did its best to stay with Mamaroneck in the goal scoring department. Five different players tallied for the Brothers.

“That’s one positive I took from this weekend,” said Drescher. “It was really good knowing we could put up nine goals in two games.”

Grant Stockman got CBA on the scoreboard first when he blasted a long shot into the upper right corner of the goal 2:30 into the first period. The 1-0 lead held until Herlitz-Ferguson scored the first of his two goals with 3:54 left in the frame. Mamaroneck added two goals before the period expired to build a 3-1 advantage.

John Basset scored off a feed from Zach Swanteck with 9:44 left in the second period to help CBA close the gap to 3-2 before Mamaroneck struck for two more goals to extend its advantage to 5-2. The Brothers pulled within two goals three times in the third period, but that was as close as they got.

Ted Bellis contributed three goals for Mamaroneck, while Swanteck, Chase Crawford and Nick Mackarowsky scored goals for CBA.

The Brothers begin their Capital District High School Hockey League season Wednesday when they play LaSalle at Hudson Valley Community College.

Hockey columnist on CBA: "It's hard to imagine a team playing any harder"

Sherrill Column: The Blue Streaks ice hockey team's triumph over CBA proved to be one for the ages

(The following is an excerpt from column, link to the full column below)

 ....

The Saratoga players and coaches said they weren’t worried. They had confidence. They knew they were going to win.

That’s a lie.

The Blue Streaks trailed 2-1 heading into the third period. Saratoga continued to pepper CBA goalie Dakota Smith with shots, but nothing got past him.

The clock kept ticking, down to 10 minutes left, 5 minutes left, 3 minutes left.

Saratoga can say they weren’t worried, but they were. Torres’ frustration at every missed opportunity tells the real story. Standing next to him, I thought I had lost hearing in my left ear a few times after missed chances for the Blue Streaks. (Luckily, it returned.)

Then, there was CBA.

The Brothers played a great game.

They ran two lines against an incredibly deep hockey team, and almost pulled it off. Smith stood on his head in net for the game. It’s hard to imagine a team playing any harder.

They were able to skate with Saratoga for two periods, capitalizing on their opportunities when they came. In the third, the tank was empty.

And still, CBA almost pulled it off. For just shy of 13 and a half minutes CBA tucked the puck in front of their net and blocked shots like they were defending the Alamo.

 ....

CBA takes defending champion Saratoga to overtime in league semifinals

Dakota Smith stood on his head in net for CBA with 32 saves in the game, including 10 in the third period. Saratoga took a 1-0 lead on a Brendon Wormley goal, before CBA scored back-to-back goals in the second period.  John Bassett and Brad Harrison scored the goals to give the Brothers a one-goal lead heading into the third. Mike Layman scored a power play goal with just 1:37 left in regulation and Saratoga went on to win 3-2 in overtime on a Nick Winters goal. The defending champion Streaks advanced to their third straight Section II Final.

"I was telling the seniors in the locker room, ‘It’s unfortunate that we lost, but what a way to go out,’" CBA assistant coach Blaine Drescher said after the game. "They left everything on the ice. That’s all I can say."
