Hockey columnist on CBA: "It's hard to imagine a team playing any harder"

Sherrill Column: The Blue Streaks ice hockey team's triumph over CBA proved to be one for the ages

(The following is an excerpt from column, link to the full column below)

 ....

The Saratoga players and coaches said they weren’t worried. They had confidence. They knew they were going to win.

That’s a lie.

The Blue Streaks trailed 2-1 heading into the third period. Saratoga continued to pepper CBA goalie Dakota Smith with shots, but nothing got past him.

The clock kept ticking, down to 10 minutes left, 5 minutes left, 3 minutes left.

Saratoga can say they weren’t worried, but they were. Torres’ frustration at every missed opportunity tells the real story. Standing next to him, I thought I had lost hearing in my left ear a few times after missed chances for the Blue Streaks. (Luckily, it returned.)

Then, there was CBA.

The Brothers played a great game.

They ran two lines against an incredibly deep hockey team, and almost pulled it off. Smith stood on his head in net for the game. It’s hard to imagine a team playing any harder.

They were able to skate with Saratoga for two periods, capitalizing on their opportunities when they came. In the third, the tank was empty.

And still, CBA almost pulled it off. For just shy of 13 and a half minutes CBA tucked the puck in front of their net and blocked shots like they were defending the Alamo.

CBA takes defending champion Saratoga to overtime in league semifinals

Dakota Smith stood on his head in net for CBA with 32 saves in the game, including 10 in the third period. Saratoga took a 1-0 lead on a Brendon Wormley goal, before CBA scored back-to-back goals in the second period.  John Bassett and Brad Harrison scored the goals to give the Brothers a one-goal lead heading into the third. Mike Layman scored a power play goal with just 1:37 left in regulation and Saratoga went on to win 3-2 in overtime on a Nick Winters goal. The defending champion Streaks advanced to their third straight Section II Final.

"I was telling the seniors in the locker room, ‘It’s unfortunate that we lost, but what a way to go out,’" CBA assistant coach Blaine Drescher said after the game. "They left everything on the ice. That’s all I can say."
