Knights Haul in 3rd Place Bronze Medals at AAU State Championships!

Our 7 mighty Knights put up a great battle over the weekend and came home proud with third place medals to show for it.  The top four teams received medals.

Cave Spring was clearly one of top three teams in the tournament.  We lead at half-time by 2 points over the eventual second place winner Loudon County Triple Threat.  In the game with tournament champion Stafford Magic we were in the lead with less than 2 minutes to go in the first half.  In both games we suffered injuries, foul trouble, and weary legs in the second half due to our low number of players.  Cave Spring dominated in our other two wins.

The Knights should be very proud of their gallant effort and accomplishment!

CS 12U Opens Their 2010 Season

CS 12U opened their season at Patrick Henry High School this weekend at a Slam Dunk Tournament.  Unfortunately, they went 1-1 the first day with 6 players.  They won the first game 44-28 over the Botetourt Magic.  The second game brought a loss to the Sonics.  Sunday brought another loss to the Rampage.  It was a good local tournament that, hopefully, helped to work out some kinks and cobwebs.  The Knights are looking forward to improving, staying focused, and settling into a strong, competitive team.  Their next tournament will be in Roanoke on January 16th.

Congratulations to the Cave Spring 10U AAU team and Coach Custer!  They won their championship by beating the Rampage by 9 points.  Way to go!

12U Knights Learn A Lot During One Day Tourney

Having to compete aginst two 13U Teams in this weekend's One Day WolfPack tourney will probably prove helpful, in the longrun, to the 12U Knights.  The first game against the 13U Vinton Wildcats gave the team confidence.  Winning by 4 helped the players realize that they can be extremely competitive, and that they have started to work out the "beginning of the season" kinks.   The next game against a terrific VBC Eagles team, brought on a skilled competitor.  The players and Coach Clary hung in there for the first half, being only down by 8.  But the second half they came up short by more than 20.  Later in the afternoon, the 12U Knights played the only other 12U team entered in the tourney and dominated with a huge win over the host Wolfpack.  Cave Spring was awarded the 12U Championship Trophy.

Overall, the team played well and look forward to practicing this week to get ready for the Dublin/Pulaski tournament.

Congratulations to Coach Mackey's 13U Knights' team in their first tournament.  Even though they came up slightly short against the 13U Wolfpack in the morning, they dominated the 13U VBC Eagles in the second game.  They finished up the day with a huge win over the 13U Vinton Wildcats.  What a great showing for the first tournament!!!

Knights Win 12 Team Broadway Invitational

Our 12U Knights played with a lot of intensity this weekend in the toughest challenge of the season.  In the preliminary rounds Cave Spring beat some scrappy opponents including the West VA Rising Stars, ERSC-Laughlin, and the Bridgewater Ballerz.

The 3 preliminary wins qualified us for the championship round versus other undefeated bracket winners VBC and Broadway.  Broadway beat VBC in the first game in an amazing comeback win by the score of 34-30.  Cave Spring and VBC locked horns next with the Knights prevailing 32-27.

The ensuing Championship Game was between the two undefeated teams Broadway and Cave Spring.  The Knights knew we were going into a battle; last season we beat Broadway just before the buzzer with a 3 point shot.  The Knights played strong in the first half and held a 16-10 half-time lead.  However, the home Gobblers reversed the trend in the second half and created a 32-32 tie at the end of regulation.  It took 3 overtimes but the Knights finally pulled away in the third overtime with a hard-fought 38-32 victory.

For the tournament the Knights went 5-0 and outscored their opponents an average of 44-27.  For the season Cave Spring is now 12-3 with an average score of 40-29 (this includes two 13U opponents).   A great start to our 2010 season!

Congrats to our 13U team who made it to the finals of the 6 team Floyd Tournament this weekend; they lost to Radford and ended in 2nd place.  Great job 7th graders!

Cave Spring Wins Pulaski Cougar Classic

Nine area 12U teams competed in the always strong Pulaski tournament.  Our Knights played two days of solid basketball and came away with the Championship Trophy.

On the first day Cave Spring defeated Floyd 56-11 and Salem 55-27.  The Knights went onto the Championship Bracket and faced long-time rival the VA Sonics; we had only beaten them once in many attempts.  This day went to Cave Spring with a 36-28 emotional victory over a quality team.  This win brought the Knights to the Championship; in the finals the Knights defeated upstart Botetourt Magic by a score of 32-28 in the Championship Game.

In this Championship run the Knights had 4 wins and no losses with an average score of 45-24.  For the season the Knights stand at 7 Wins and 3 Losses.

Our 13U team also made a great showing finishing in 2nd Place!!

Tough Roanoke City Jam Sees Knights Finish 3rd of 9 Teams

This tournament included maybe the best overall group of teams to assemble in Roanoke for our age group.  Teams included the mighty VA Warriors, AAU Regular the VA Panthers, Roanoke Rampage, Southside Stars, Martinsville Magic Heat, Greensboro Galaxy, Waynesboro Jayhawks, Franklin County Wolfpack, and our Cave Spring Knights.

The preliminary round saw Cave Spring struggling by losing 56-43 to the Magic Heat and 47-40 to the Rampage.  Coach Clary commented that our defense fell apart on Day 1 and would have to be much better to get wins in the Championship Round on Sunday.

Defense was the theme of the day on Sunday and it worked.  Cave Spring defeated the Galaxy 43-25, followed by a 51-27 win over Franklin County.   This moved Cave Spring into the top 4 teams and the semi-finals.

The Knights faced off against the very athletic Panthers from Norfolk.  The Knights lost their composure in the first few minutes of the game getting down 18-4; the half-time score was 30-14.  The second half saw a very determined Knights squad battling back and cutting the margin to 43-40 with just about 1:45 showing on the clock.  The Knights had to commit some fouls trying to get the ball back and saw the game end 49-44.  It was a loss, but one that the team members should be proud of knowing they took a very strong team to the wire.

As a result of our tournament record we finished 3rd in the tournament and the Southside Stars finished 4th.  The VA Warriors won the Championship Game versus the Panthers by a score of 69-52.

Knights Win Radford Championship Going 4-0

Six 12U teams came to Radford for the weekend tournament including:  Franklin County Wolfpack; Princeton, WV Storm; Pulaski Cougars; Radford Bobcats; Roanoke Rampage, and the Cave Spring Knights.

On day one Cave Spring faced a tough Storm team from Princeton.  The Knights blistered the nets early running the score to 22-6 in quick fashion.  However, the Storm had just come off two tournament championships and showed their resilience cutting the half-time score to 32-24.  Cave Spring stepped up their defense in the second half holding the Storm to only six points; the game ended with a 59-30 victory for the Knights.

The Knights faced arch-rival the Roanoke Rampage in game two and it proved to be a battle; half-time showed Knights 22 and the Rampage 19.  However, Cave Spring pulled away in the second half and took victory by a score of 40-31.

Cave Spring finished day one in first place of the A Division while 3-0 Pulaski won the B Division.  Day two saw Cave Spring having to face the Rampage again as they had defeated the B 2nd Place Franklin County Wolfpack.  This game was very similar to the previous day as Cave Spring held a 21-17 half-time lead and won the game over the Rampage by a score of 43-32.

The Championship Game pitted Cave Spring against the Storm again.  The Storm had defeated B  Division 1st Place team Pulaski by a score of 52-29 to get to the finals.  The scoring was almost a complete reversal of the day before as Princeton jumped out to an early 17-2 lead over the Knights.  However, the Knights clawed their way back in tying the game at half-time 22-22.  Cave Spring won the championship by a score of 46-38.

This is the 4th time in the last 5 outings that Cave Spring has brought home the championship tropy!

Knights Had A Very Successful 2010 Season!

Our Cave Spring Knights had a terrific 2010 season.  We Won Four out of Seven Tournaments and finished 3rd in the Virginia AAU D-2 State Championships! This was quite a feat as most teams we faced had players from multiple schools.

Our players this season were:
Zach Shannon, Walker Champney, Trevor Lee, Paxton Daniels, Mason Reyer, Khal Clary, Jordan Stovall, Davis Call, Brody Hicks, & Adam Sledd

This will be a pivotal year for some of our Knights as they will go on to play for the Cave Spring Middle School Knights this coming school year.   We had an amazing group of student-first athletes on this squad; they will be very successful adults one day as they understand the value of hard work, perseverance, and teamwork!  You guys are CHAMPIONS in every sense of the word!

Coach Clary wants to thank all the parents and players for their efforts and support this season!  SPECIAL THANKS TO:
