2009 Carolina All-Stars 13-Under Team Win AAU State Championship
Carolina All-Stars 13U State Champions
The 2009 Carolina All-Stars 13-Under Team claimed the North Carolina AAU State Championship on Sunday, April 26, 2009 in Fayetteville, North Carolina defeating the WNC Lady Royals 65 - 39 in the championship game.  Along the way to the state championship, the team defeated the following teams by an average of 35 points (Team Reign, Lake Norman Magic, Alamance Elite and WNC Lady Royals).  In July, the team is head to the National Championships to be held in Kings Island, Ohio.  The championship team photo is listed above:  Front Row (#11 Bayley Cox (Durham), #10 Alexis Brower (Pittsboro), #3 Ashley Mull (Belmont), #5 Lauren Smith (Gastonia)  Top Row (Coach Ty Cox, #35 Briana Day (Durham), #42 Armarni Asberry (Durham), #24 Mercedes Harris (Raleigh), #15 Sydni Dobson (Durham), #34 Bria Day (Durham), #23 Alexis Armstrong (Gastonia).

Long-time Carolina All-Stars Kristen Lyon commits to play basketball at Western Carolina University

KRISTEN LYON COMMITS TO PLAY BASKETBALL AT WESTERN CAROLINA 

Durham, NC - The Carolina All-Stars/NC Flight Girls Basketball Organization is pleased to announce that Kristen Lyon has verbally committed to play for Coach Karen Middleton at Western Carolina University.  Kristen becomes Coach Middleton's 1st recruit in her tenure at Western Carolina.  Coach Middleton previously coached at Illinois and 10 years at Stanford.  Western Carolina is the defending Southern Conference Tournament Champions and represented the conference in the 2009 NCAA Tournament making its 4th post-season trip in the past 5 seasons.  Western Carolina Women’s Basketball Ranked Eighth in 2009 WBCA Academic Top 25 with a combined team GPA of 3.428.  The Lady Catamounts ended the 2008-09 season with a 21-12 record, the third

“Western Carolina has the right combination of everything I am looking for in a school and basketball program.”  Lyon explained her decision.  “It has a beautiful campus with strong academics, winning tradition and a coaching staff that I felt very comfortable with playing for the next four years. 

 

Added Carolina All-Stars Director Ty Cox "It has truly been a joy to have Kristen in our program for so long and we are very happy for her and her family today.  I am extremely confident that she will do well in whatever she chooses in basketball and in life.  Kristen is a uniquely special young lady." 

Kristen is a very versatile 5'10" guard from Durham Jordan High School (North Carolina).  Kristen is extremely strong physical player with a nice shooting touch that also finishes well inside.  She works hard on both ends of court and plays with a high level of basketball intelligence.  Kristen is truly one the special players in this class.  

As a junior at Jordan, she led the PAC-6 Conference in assists and was 2nd in scoring.  As a sophomore, she led the PAC-6 conference is rebounding and was 3rd in scoring.  Last season, she recorded 11 double-doubles and had season highs of 25 points and 17 rebounds.  Plays travel basketball with Carolina All-Stars and NC Flight.  She was a member of the Carolina All-Stars Team that won the 2009 AAU Open Division State Championship and NC Flight Team that won the 2008 AAU Sophomore Super Showcase Championship at Disney last summer.   She was named to the 2008 & 2009 PAC-6 All-Conference and Herald-Sun Newspaper All-Area Teams.  Kristen needs less than 200 points this season to become Jordan’s All-Time Leading Scorer. Her high school coach is Michael Mulligan. 

Kristen is the daughter of John and Desiree Lyon and has an older brother John, III (Sophomore Football Player at Harvard University) and younger sister Justine (A 3 year member of AAU Nationally Ranked Carolina All-Stars 2015 Team) and younger brother Samuel.  Kristen has played and trained with the Carolina All-Stars since the age of 12. Some of the other schools Kristen considered were Gardner-Webb University, Elon University, Virginia Tech, UNC-Asheville, Radford and Charleston-Southern.  Kristen will sign her national letter of intent during the early signing period in November. 

Kristen is the 3rd member from the 2010 16U Team coached by Kevin Smith to commit to a Division I school.  Point Guard Shannon Smith has committed to play at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Post Lindsy Wright has committed to play at Wake Forest.  Post Lauren White and Guards Kelsey Harris and LaCherish Reed are all still considering a number Division I opportunities.

CAROLINA ALL-STARS/ NC FLIGHT SHANNON SMITH COMMITS TO PLAY FOR COACH HATCHELL AT UNC-CH
The Carolina All-Stars/NC Flight Girls Basketball Organization is pleased to announced that today Shannon Smith committed to play for Coach Sylvia Hatchell at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill beginning in the fall of 2010.  
Shannon is a very talented 5'7" point guard from Gastonia, NC with a strong handle and high basketball IQ.  She sees the floor well, delivers pinpoint accurate passes and has the ability to shoot from 3 point range off the dribble.  During the 2008-2009 season, Shannon was the only non-senior to be named to the AP All-State 1st team.  She averaged 26 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals per game.  Her season highs were 42 points and 12 assists (3 twices).  Shannon is a tremendous competitor and proven leader and winner.  Her NC Flight/Carolina All-Stars travel teams have claimed Northe Carolina State AAU championships in each of the last 4 years and captured the 2008 AAU Sophomore Super Showcase Championship last summer in Disney.  Shannon helped lead her Forestview High School team to the 2009 AAA state championship game.  Shannon was also named the 2009 State Player of the Year by the North Carolina High School Coaches Association.  Shannon has been trained and is coached by her dad, Kevin Smith who is the co-director of the NC Flight/Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball Organization.  Her high school coach is Ken Beatty of Gastonia Forestview High School.  Shannon is the daughter of Kevin and Ramada Smith and has an older brother Kevin and younger sister Lauren.  Lauren plays on the 2009 13-Under State Championship Team.

11 and Under Carolina All-Stars 3rd Straight NC AAU CHAMPIONSHIP


The Carolina All-Stars 11 and Under team finished the weekend with their 3rd straight North Carolina AAU State Championship.  While doing this, they remain undefeated in the State of North Carolina in there age group 3 years in a row.  Way to go girls!!!

Carolina All-Stars 9 and Under Capture the YBOA National Title

Carolina All-Stars 9 and Under are YBOA National Champions

The Carolina All-Stars 9 and Under team have arrived back home with some serious hardware.  They have come back with the 9 and Under Girls National Champions Title and National Championship Trophy.  Girls traveling to nationals were: Tajah Clark, Amber Courtney, Tamia Eatmon, Quineshia Graham, Kiara Jacobs, Mariah Jacobs, Mon  Jones, Brittany Kelly, Jamia Kenan, Imari McLean, Jazmyne Norwood, Nakeisha Revels, Kirsten Smith, Bryanna Staton, and Jessica Wall. The girls played an awesome tournament and went undefeated during bracket play.  Special thanks to Coaches Brian Norwood, John Courtney and Sherai Jones.  The girls also capture many individual and team awards which are listed below.  Excellent Job Ladies!!!

Carolina All-Stars Sweep YBOA Regionals!!!!
The Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball Organization sweep the North Carolina Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) Regionals with a combined 24-0 record. The 9-U YBOA Regional was won in Wilkesboro, 10-U and 12-U Regionals were won in Fayetteville and 11-U and 13-U Regionals were won in Pinehurst. All five teams were undefeated and will compete for the YBOA of North Carolina State Championships to be held in Statesville, North Carolina on May 6 - 8, 2005. Great job ladies and good luck at the State Championships.

North Carolina and Virginia AAU Girls Basketball Challenge & Invitational
The revised master schedule for the 2005 North Carolina/ Virginia AAU Girls Basketball Challenge and Invitational to held on June 18 & 19, 2005 at Lyon Park Recreation Center and Brogden Middle School for team ages 10 - 13. Games will begin on Saturday, June 18th at 8:30 am. Teams participating in this year's challenge include 5 State Champions; Roanoke Stars (VA DIV. I 10U), Greensboro Lady Gaters (NC DIV. I 12U), Carolina All-Stars (NC DIV. II 12U), James River (VA DIV. I 13U) and Garner Flames (NC DIV. I 13U and 2004 12U DIV. I Nationals 3rd Place)) and 3 State Runner-Ups (Boo Williams Red Tide VA DIV. I 10U, Prince William Virginians VA DIV. I 12U and Prince William Virginians VA DIV. I 13U). Other teams participating are Carolina All-Stars 10U, Norfolk Express 10U (VA AAU DIV. I 3rd Place), Carolina Lady Cougars 10U (NC AAU DIV. I 3rd Place), Greensboro Lady Gaters 11U (2004 10U DIV. II Nationals Runner-Up), Carolina All-Stars 11U, Carolina Comets 12U (NC AAU DIV. I 3rd Place), Carolina All-Stars 13U and Greensboro Lady Gaters 13U (NC AAU DIV. I 3rd Place).

A revised schedule was updated as of 6/14/05 5:00 pm due to consolidating this event into two (2) gyms; Lyon Park Recreation Center and Brogden Middle School.  This schedule and gym directions are attached below.

10-U Nearly Capture AAU Division II National Championship in Orlando, FL

The 10-Under Team of the Durham-based Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball Organization finished 2nd in the nation at the AAU 10-Under Division II National Championship held in Orlando, Florida at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex during the 10 days of competition from June 24, 2005 – July 4, 2005.


The national tournament was hosted by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and featured nearly 30 teams from 15 states.  The Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball 10-Under AAU Division II National Runner-Up Team included Guard Emerald Smith (Durham), Guard Courtney Benson (Durham), Guard Jamisha Lee (Durham), Guard Taylor Torres (Durham), Forward Janetta Hunt (Durham), Forward Arianna Jacobs (Carrboro), Forward Chanell Daye (Creedmoor), Forward Ashley Courtney (Garner) and Center Morgan McGee (Durham).

The team was coached by Carolina All-Stars Director Ty Cox and Damon Copeland.

11-U Finish 3rd in Nation at AAU Division II National Championship in Nashville, TN

The 11-Under Team of the Durham-based Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball Organization finished 3rd in the nation at the AAU 11-Under Division II National Championship held in Nashville, Tennessee during the 9 days of competition from July 17, 2005 – July 24, 2005. 

The national tournament was hosted by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and featured fifty-two teams from twenty-two states.  The Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball 11-Under AAU Division II National 3rd Place Team included Forward Chandrica Fuller (Durham), Center Mardre Morris (Durham), Forward Tyler Holloway (Durham), Forward Miyah Shaw (Durham), Guard Akira Sampson (Roxboro), Center Tyler Hobgood (Roxboro), Guard Attiana O’Neal-Dixon (Durham), Guard Jennifer Brown (Hillsborough) and Guard Misha Alston (Pittsboro). 

The team was head coached by Steven Morris and assistant coach Bobby Fuller.

2004 Carolina All-Stars Open Gyms for 2005 Spring Season

Carolina All-Stars will host its final two 2005 Spring Season Open Gyms and Informal Parent Information Sessions of 2004 for girls ages 9 – 13 (4th – 8th Grades) on Sunday, November 21st (4:00 pm - 6:00 pm) and Sunday, December 5, 2004 (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm).

Open Gyms are set up to allow players in the Carolina All-Stars program to continue to sharpen their skills.  It also allows players and parents not already in the program to come and see what our program is about and to try-out to become a player in our program for 2005 Season.  All girls interested in trying out for 2005 season are encouraged to attend Open Gyms.  Come check us out and see if you have the skills to be a part of the Carolina All-Stars Basketball Organizations.  Teams are organized based upon age as of January 1, 2005.

For the 2005 Season, Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball Organization will have  9-U, 10-U, 11-U, 12-U & 13-U teams. 
The player age determination date will be as of 1/1/2005.  Tryouts have concluded for 9-U & 10-U teams.  Tryouts for 14-U team will be held in late February.  If you are interested in playing for the 9-U, 10-U or 14-U teams, please contact Director Ty Cox at (919) 313-4858 to schedule to discuss possible playing opportunities for 2005.  There may still be an opportunity for your daughter to be selected for the team.



Tryouts for 2005 Season 11-under, 12-under and 13-under will be held on Sunday, February 6, 2005 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the Community & Family Life Center at Lyon Park, 1313 Halley Street.  Players are asked to wear a white (or light colored) t-shirts and bring black (or dark colored) t-shirt to tryouts.  Reversible jerseys with a light and dark side are also OK.
 
Player registration for the tryouts will be held during open gyms on Sunday, January 9, 16, 23 and 30, 2005 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Lyon Park Recreation Center Gym.  All players must register in order to tryout for a team.  The tryout registration fee is $ 25.00, this covers player 2005 Season AAU Card and Insurance.  Please also bring a copy of the player's birth certificate to tryout registration.  Additional details about the 2005 season will be provided during open gyms.


ALL PLAYERS ARE EXPECTED TO REGISTER FOR TRYOUTS IN ADVANCE OF TRYOUTS.

The Carolina All-Stars will have its 2005 Season Annual Tip-Off Meeting on Sunday, January 9, 2005 at the Lyon Park Recreation Center Gym from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.  All Parents, Players and Coaches interested in being a part of the Carolina All-Stars in 2005 should attend the meeting.  This time is set aside to go over the whole season.    Information on 2005 fees, 9-Under, 10-Under, 11-Under, 12-Under & 13-Under Teams and Tryouts, uniforms, coaching information, tournaments, team travel arrangements, parent and player expectations, rules, schedules, policies, team pictures, hosted events, web site access, fund raising and over all club and team management will be discussed. There will be a breakout session that each coach will meet with players and their parents to discuss team rules and player expectations. Because this meeting is so essential; we do require some parent or guardian and the player to be at this meeting.    It is very important that you and your parent attend this meeting.  Players will also be allowed to play basketball during the scheduled open gym, so players should come prepared to play.

Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball announces 2005 Fall AAU Season Information

Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball is pleased to announce that registration for the 2005 Fall AAU Season has begun and will end on August 30, 2005.


9-Under (1995s or younger) – 10-Under (1994s) 
11-Under (1993s) – 12/13-Under (1992s/1991s)



$ 200.00 per Player (9-U) - Due August 30, 2005
$ 250.00 per Player (10-U, 11-U, 12/13-U) - Due August 30, 2005
$ 25.00 DISCOUNT IF PAID BY AUGUST 23, 2005




The Fall Season will go from August to October. This price will include Friday night 4th – 9th grade leagues (Played at Downtown Durham YMCA), 2-3 AAU tournaments, young player fundamentals camp (9-U), complete player fundamentals training camp (10-U, 11-U & 12/13U), practice time, New 05-06 AAU card, insurance, coaches’ expenses and administrative fees. Players will be placed on teams based on the age you sign up for to play. The Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball Organization will have the right to place you in the age group we feel is best for the player if we think that the player cannot compete in the grade she signs up for to play. Players will sign up on an individual basis and will be assigned to teams that our staff will place them on based on where we think they will benefit the most in getting playing time. The fall season will be used as a tool for us to evaluate the players for the 2006 season. Players will be placed on teams of 8 to 12 players per team.

There is a $ 25 discount if fees are paid by August 23, 2005.  The complete fee and this paperwork is due on August 30, 2005, no exceptions. You will not be placed on a Carolina All-Stars Girls Basketball Organization 2005 fall team if this information and the money are not in our hands by this date.
 

Please register by mailing information to address listed above or attend one of the open gyms and registration sessions listed below.  Any player that is interested in playing middle school or high school basketball is strongly encouraged to get involved in club basketball. More and more players today are getting involved in club basketball and because of this it is making it more difficult for those players not involved to make their high school team. If basketball is your daughter’s love, give her the opportunity she deserves to benefit from our experience and training and play with us during the 2005 Fall Season.


Players may register at our 2005 Fall Open Gyms & Registration at Lyon Park Community Family Life Center Gym for girls ages 6 – 14 (2nd – 9th Grade) held on Sunday, August 14th (2:00 pm – 4:00 pm), Tuesday, August 16th (6:30 pm – 8:30 pm), Thursday, August 18th (6:30 pm – 8:30 pm), Sunday, August 21st (2:00 pm – 4:00 pm) and Tuesday, August 23rd (6:00 pm – 6:30 pm). Open Gyms are set up to allow players in the Carolina All-Stars program to continue to sharpen their skills. It also allows players and parents not already in the program to come and participate in our program. All girls interested in playing in 2005 Fall season are encouraged to attend Open Gyms.
