Honkers Rally Past Cardinals In First Round of State Playoffs
Kenmare overcame a Cardinal first half scoring frenzy to earn a 48-34 win a a muddy Kenmare field on Tuesday night. The Cardinals came out flying as they scored on their first four possesions to lead 34 - 24 at the half.
As the field conditions deteriated in the second half the offensive line of the Honkers anfd their power running game took control of the contes. Washburn struggled with bad snaps and water soaked, muddy ball to throw in the second half were unable to respond.

Cardinals Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Wilton
On Thursday night a determined Cardinal squad hit the field knowing that a win obver rival Wilton - wing would put them into the state playoffs. Washburn responded by putting 16 points on the board before Wilton ran an offensive play and ran away from the Miners with a 38 - 0 victory.
It was the seconf shutout of the year for the Cardinal defense which turned over the Miners 3 times (Weinmann fumble recovery, Rassmussen & Deitz interceptions). Seniors Justin Petersen and Mitch Wachendorf led the Cardinals with 14 and 12 tackles respectively.
Offensively, Wachendorf ran for 108 yards while Jeff Rasmussen passed for 4 TD's. Sophomore Evan Eberle scored 3 TD's.

Depleted Cardinals Lose to #1 Ranked Mott-Regent
Traveling to Mott to played the top ranked team in the state is a daunting task at any time. Throw in unseasonably cold temperatures, a brisk wind and the fact that WHS was hit hard by the flu bug intensified the task for the Cardinals.
With only twelve players in uniforn the Caedinals put up a good fight but in the end were convincingly beaten 44 - 14. Sophomore Evan Eberle stood out catching 5 passes for 90 yards, while making 6 tackles defensively. Soph. Monty Johnson caught one TD pass from QB Jeff Rasmussen (215 yards passing on the night), while freshmen Brett Schreiner caught another. Schreiner who is the teams backup QB was forced to play TE because off the flu bug that hit the squad.
Kier Vander Wal played a strong game catching three passes and recording seven tackles.

Cardinals Cruise to Second Victory
Washburn's defense came up big Friday night to pitch a shutout 36-0 over the visiting Center - Stanton Wildcats. Sophore LB Evan Eberle & Jr. Safety Jeff Rasmussen led the team with 8 tackles each. Justin Petersen and Andrew Kaiser added each had 5 tackles and junior LB Weston Deitz picked off 2 Wildcat passes.
The ballanced offense produced 430 yards. 230 on the ground and 200 through the air. Mitch Wachendorf ran for 64 yards and a TD, while Kier Vander Wal gained 53 yards on 4 carries. QB Jeff Rasmussen was 12 for 16 passing for 129 yards and 3 TD's. Freshmen QB Brett Schreiner saw extensive action and was 3 for 6 passing for 71 yards and a TD. Vander Wal led the receiving corp with 4 receptions for 44 yards and a TD.

Cardinals Down Skyhawks 34-12
The Shiolh Skyhawks dominated the time of possesion and the total yardage statistics been fell far short of the Cardinals on the scoreboard.
Washburn cashed in on scoring plays of 27, 18, 45, 50 and 72 yards while keeping the Skyhawk grind it out style of offense out of the endzone most of the night.
Kyle Sailer rushed for 99 yards, had another ww yards receiving and added another 72 yards on one kickoff return. QB Jeff Rasmussen hooked up with senior WR for a 50 yard TD pass.
Defensively, the Cardinals were led by Charlie Retterath, Mitch Wachendorf, Lier Vander Wal & Caleb Strecker.

Cardinals Drop Hard Fought Contest to Mott-Regent
Mott-Regent took adavantage of a couple of early Cardinal mistakes to open a 16 - 0 lead two minutes into the game last night.
After that the teams slugged it out to a 30 - 30 tie the rest of the game. Washburn could not erase that that early Wildfire lead and lost the ballgame 46-30. The Cardinals comeback attemp was thwarted by 5 turnover to none for the wildfire.
Next week the Cardinals host the Central McLean Cougars.

Cardinals Even 2008 Record vs. Wilton
Washburn fumbled the ball on its first drive of the game, but recovered to score on its next 5 possesions to roll to a 52 - 8 victory over Wilton on Saturday night.
The Cardinals balanced offense (240 yards rushing / 171 passing) was led by QB Jeff Rasmussen (9 for 9 passing, 163 yards) and RB Kyle Sailer (20 points scored).
DE Joe Freidig led a strong Cardinal defense with 12 tackles, including a QB sack. LB Justin Petersen recorded 10 tackles with 1 sack and a fumble recovery.

Cardinal End Season With Thrilling Come From Behind Victory

Washburn came from 14 points behind on two different occasions last Friday night to clain a 44 - 41 vistory over the Heart River Cougars.
Trailing by 14 in the second quarter the Cardinals came storming back starting with a perfectly executed play action pass from Jeff Rasmussen to Michael Sheldon for an 84 yard TD pass. On Washburn's next possesion QB Joe Kaiser surprised the Cougar defense by by taking the ball up the middle for a 74 yard QB sneak for the score.
Trailing 28 - 14 at the half, Washburn scored on the first drive of the third quarter when Sr. WR Jordan Beutler made two big pass receptions to set Washburn up in a first & goal situation. Jr. Kyle Sailor capped the drive with a 4 yard TD run.
Sailor struck again hitting paydirt on a 90 yard kickoff return.
Washburn took its first lead of the game when Jordan Beutler took a short pass and latteraled to Paul Swanson for a 57 yard scoring play.
Heart River regained the lead but Washburn scored last when Rasmussen hit Paul Swanson with a 29 yard scoring strike.
Washburn sealed the win when the defense stopped Heart River on a fourth and two play late in the game.
Defensively Washburn was led by Jordan Melby with 9 tackles, Paul Wollmuth & Paul Swanson added 7 tackles each.

Cardinals Drop Tight Game to Center-Stanton
Washburn lost a two point game on a dreary night in Center Friday night, 24 - 20. Senior RB Paul Swanson scored three times for the Cardinals but it wasn't enough as the Wildcat offense controled the game with their grinf out style offense behind RB Aaron Reinke.
Swanson had several big gains on Washburn drive to tie the game when he scored with 4:47 to go in the 4th quarter. Washburn failed on the two point conversion and would never see the ball again.
LB's Paul Wollmuth & Michael Sheldon along with sophomore CB Mitch Wachendorf led the Cardinal defense in the game.

Cardinals Lose Shootout to Hettinger
Washburn battled the 6 - 1 Hettinger Black Devils with everything they had last Friday night, but the Black Devils prevailed behind the power running of Cole Miller 56 - 36.
No one would have anticipated the final score after both defenses dominated the first half that ended in a 8 - 8 tie. Washburn was trailing 8 - 0 in the second quarter with 6 minutes remaining, senior QB Joe Kaiser led the team on a 92 yard drive for the tieing score. Kaiser hit Paul Swanson with a 14 yard TD pass with 20 seconds left in the half. He followed that up with a conversion strike to senior WR Jordan Beutler.
Washburn took the lead early in the third when freshman QB Jeff Rasmussen hit Kyle Sailor with a 16 yard scoring pass. Hettinger then drove for the tieing score. The Cardinals Paul Swanson responded with a 85 yard kickoff return to put Washburn back in front. A Cardinal turnover setup another Black Devil TD and the Black Devils executed an onside kick to set up the score that would put then a head to stay.
Washburn fought back with Rassmussen hitting seniors Jordan Beutler and Michael Sheldon with scoring passes in the fourth quarter.
LB's Michael Sheldon, Paul Swanson, & Paul Wollmuth led the Washburn defense in tackles. Defensive ends Jordan Melby and Joe Freidig played strong games. CB's Kyle Sailor & Mitch Wachendorf had outstanding game covering the talented Black Devil WR's.

Cardinals Earn Big Homecoming Game
The return of Junior Kyle Sailor to the Washburn lineup sparked the Cardinals to a 54 - 22 homecoming win.
Sailor scored the first two TD's of the game and then added a a third a 76 yard kickoff return. Senior Paul Swanson rushed for 108 yards and scored 14 points. Senior Michael Sheldon led the Cardinal receivers with 4 catches for 48 yards.
Swanson and Sheldon led the Cardinal defensive with 12 and 11 tackles respectively. Joe Kaiser picked off a Skyhawk.

Cardinals Clinch Playoff Spot For Tenth Straight Season
Washburn won a hard earned 34 - 22 victory over a determined Wilton Miner squad on in Wilton on Friday night. Junior Paul Swanson got Washburn off to a great start scooping up a Miner fumble and returning it 31 yards for the opening TD. Swanson added a 40 yard TD run from scrimmage on Washburns next possession. The Cardinals added two more TD's in the second quarter for a comfortable 26 - 0.
Washburn was driving for another TD on the opening possession of the third quarter when the injury bug rose its ugly head again. On two consecutive plays Washburn lost key starters to injuries. With the Cardinals scrambling to regroup Wilton gathered the momentum scoring two third quarter TD's to get back in the game. In the fourth quarter Washburn mounted a 10 play drive ending with Landon Schneider hauling in Chad Reimer TD pass to seal the win.
The Washburn victory coupled with TLM's win over Underwood makes the Cardinals and the Trojans the Region 6 representatives in the playoffs starting in two weeks. Washburn travels to TLM next Friday to conclude the regular season.

Ten Most Memorable Games
Here are my top ten games that I have coached in my 28 years on the Washburn sidelines. If you have other games to nominate please let me know. Coach Moe 1978 WHS 8 - Hazen 6 In my first game in Washburn we came from behind in the final minutes to steal a win on the Bison's home field. QB Jeff Leidholm, RB's Mark Hagel & Doug Reiser, Receivers Dwight Gradin & Loren Reimers along with linemen Rick Nordquist, Paul Jannsen, Stuart Pickell, Jon Chrest, Kerry Beckman & Daryl Person led the Cardinals that season.
1990 WHS 14 - Beulah 12 Chris Hyttinens power running and the accurate toe of Charlie Heringer sealed a homecoming victory over the defending state champions.
1993 WHS 25 - Watford City 12 The Cardinals made their first trip to Watford City and came away with a solid victory. QB DJ Hushka passed for 177 yards to receivers Eric Tollefson & Eric Dissel in the victory.
1993 WHS 9 - Des Lacs - Burlington 6 (OT) On a bitterly cold October night the Cardinals won a defensive battle over the team that would go on to win the 1993 state championship. Eric Hyttinen picked off two Laker passes late in the game to force the overtime. Lawrence Gomes kicked the FG to gives us the win. Ryan Sabin recovered a Laker fumble to end the game. 1994
WHS 19 - Velva 16 QB DJ Huschka connected on 9 of 14 passes for 189 yards leading Washburn to TD's on their first three possessions.
1998 WHS 53 - Kenmare 16 (State Playoffs) Washburn roared to a 46 - 0 halftime lead in dominating a highly respected Kenmare squad. Nate Brunsell rushed for 136 yards and QB Jon Anderson passed for 144 yards in the win.
1999 WHS 14 - Velva 7 (State Playoffs) QB Matt Adsero riddled the Aggie defense with passes to Ray Caylor while the Cardinal defense came up big being led by Nate Brunsell, Donavan Pickell & Tim Forsch.
2003 WHS 20 - Killdeer 0 A week after losing a heartbreaker to Bowman the Cardinals saved their season by traveling to Killdeer and giving them their only conference loss of the season. The Ward DeMontigny & Barry Kinnischtzke led defense kept the Cowboys in check all night. Sophomore Eric Eberle gave the Cardinals the lead for good with a 26 yard run in the third quarter.
2003 WHS 14 - Velva 20 (State Playoffs) On a snow covered field Washburn led the eventual state champion for all but the last two minutes of the game before coming up a little bit short.
2005 WHS 22 - Wilton 8 Washburn used an amazing 24 play, 12 minute drive to down the determined Miners and take over first place for good in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Cardinals Use The Drive To Knock The Miners Out Of The Top Spot In Region 6
Washburn used a punishing running game to pound a hard fought 22 - 8 victory over the Wilton Miners Friday night. It was a sweet homecoming victory and their 7th straight on the season.
Washburn's answer to the potent Miner offense was to keep them off the field. Washburn ran 78 offensive plays to the Miners 35 effectively controlling the ball and the clock. Washburn mixed the run and the pass effectively of their first drive to take an early 6 - 0 lead, but Wilton scored its only TD on its next possession and with the two point conversion led 8-6. From that point the Washburn offensive line of Brad Klug, Bryce Rost, Adam Forsch & Cody Kinnischtzke took over leading the way for a 11 play 72 yard drive for the go ahead TD in the second quarter. Washburn put the game away when they took over on their own 5 yard line following a Miner punt with 4 minutes left in the third quarter. Twelve minutes and 24 running plays later the Cardinals sealed the victory with their third TD.
Wilton's last two possessions ended in interceptions by Landen Schneider & Stephen Joerz.
Eric Eberle & Jeff Schafer led the ground attack with 120 & 87 yards respectively.
Cardinals Qualify For The NDSHSAA Playoffs For The Ninth Straight Year
Washburn's win over Wilton locked up one of Region 6 two playoff spots for them. TLM or Wilton will get the other spot depending on the outcome of the Washburn - TLM game Oct. 14.
The state playoffs start Saturday, Oct. 22.
Cardinals Conquer #2 Ranked New Salem
The #4 state ranked Cardinals invaded the home field of #2 state ranked New Salem Holsteins Friday night and came away with a 40 - 6 victory.
The Cardinals kicked off to start the game and quickly forced a three and out punt. Washburn then showed what was to come as QB Chad Reimer hit Cody Kinnischtzke with a 58 yard scoring play on the Washburn's first play from scrimmage. Reimer would complete 8 of his 9 passing attempts in the game. Two of them went for TD's. Senior Eric Eberle gained 167 yards on thirteen carries and added another 65 yards receiving.
The Cardinal's defense was just as impressive has they shut down the potent Holstein running game, holding them to 123 yards. Brad Klug and Jeff Schafer each accumulated 11 tackles, while junior Nate Richard made 8 stops.
Next week Washburn plays in Hettinger. 7PM ct kickoff.
