Jeff Rasmussen Named Second Team All State
QB Jeff Rasmussen was named to second team All State by the states coaches.
Jeff passed passed for 2,127 yards and 23 TD's. On the ground he rushed 78 times for 620 yards and 8 TD's. 2,747 yards of total offense.

Honkers Rally Past Cardinals In First Round of State Playoffs
Kenmare overcame a Cardinal first half scoring frenzy to earn a 48-34 win a a muddy Kenmare field on Tuesday night. The Cardinals came out flying as they scored on their first four possesions to lead 34 - 24 at the half.
As the field conditions deteriated in the second half the offensive line of the Honkers anfd their power running game took control of the contes. Washburn struggled with bad snaps and water soaked, muddy ball to throw in the second half were unable to respond.

Cardinals Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Wilton
On Thursday night a determined Cardinal squad hit the field knowing that a win obver rival Wilton - wing would put them into the state playoffs. Washburn responded by putting 16 points on the board before Wilton ran an offensive play and ran away from the Miners with a 38 - 0 victory.
It was the seconf shutout of the year for the Cardinal defense which turned over the Miners 3 times (Weinmann fumble recovery, Rassmussen & Deitz interceptions). Seniors Justin Petersen and Mitch Wachendorf led the Cardinals with 14 and 12 tackles respectively.
Offensively, Wachendorf ran for 108 yards while Jeff Rasmussen passed for 4 TD's. Sophomore Evan Eberle scored 3 TD's.

Depleted Cardinals Lose to #1 Ranked Mott-Regent
Traveling to Mott to played the top ranked team in the state is a daunting task at any time. Throw in unseasonably cold temperatures, a brisk wind and the fact that WHS was hit hard by the flu bug intensified the task for the Cardinals.
With only twelve players in uniforn the Caedinals put up a good fight but in the end were convincingly beaten 44 - 14. Sophomore Evan Eberle stood out catching 5 passes for 90 yards, while making 6 tackles defensively. Soph. Monty Johnson caught one TD pass from QB Jeff Rasmussen (215 yards passing on the night), while freshmen Brett Schreiner caught another. Schreiner who is the teams backup QB was forced to play TE because off the flu bug that hit the squad.
Kier Vander Wal played a strong game catching three passes and recording seven tackles.

Cougars Out Muscle Cardinals in Underwood
Washburn put up a great fight against the 5 - 1 Central McLean Cougars but fell 44 - 24 last Friday night. The Cardinals spotted the Cougars two quick scores but then ralled to make it competitive game trailing 24 - 16 at the half.
The second half belonged to the Cougars as their size and stable of running backs led by All World Grant Singer wore the Cardinals down.
The Central McLean defense harrased Cardinal QB Jeff Rasmussen all night holding him to 180 yards passing with no TD passes. Rasmussen did score one TD rushing, as did Sr. running back Mitch Wachendorg and Soph. Evan Eberle.
LB's Wachendorf and Eberle led the Washburn defense with 15 & 17 tackles respectively. SR. DE Justin Peterson & Soph. NG James Cavo added 9 and 10 tackles.
Rasmussen and Soph. Andrew Kaiser picked off Cougar passes for the Cardinals.
This week the Cardinals travel to Mott to take on the #1 team in the state. 8PM ct start.

Cardinals Soar to Homecoming Win
Washburn earned a hard fought 30 - 18 over the visiting Hettinger Blackdevils on Sept. 25.
Kier Vander Wal hauled in 9 Jeff Rasmussen passes for 121 yards and a TD to pace Cardinal receivers. QB Jeff Rasmussen completed 18 for 28 for 241 yards and 2 TD's while running for 2 more.
Washburn's defense was led by Sophomore DE Monty Johnson who recorder 4 QB sacks. Mitch Wachendorf led the team with 16 tackles & Evan Eberle added another 14 vs. a ground pounding Hettinger offense.

Cardinals Comeback Falls Short at Beach
Washburn looked to be out of the game when Beach scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter to go up 35 - 8 on the Cardinals. Whasburn got hot and scored three times in the next 6 minutes to cut the lead to 35 - 30. Beach scored in the final minute to seal the 42 - 30 victory.

Cardinals Cruise to Second Victory
Washburn's defense came up big Friday night to pitch a shutout 36-0 over the visiting Center - Stanton Wildcats. Sophore LB Evan Eberle & Jr. Safety Jeff Rasmussen led the team with 8 tackles each. Justin Petersen and Andrew Kaiser added each had 5 tackles and junior LB Weston Deitz picked off 2 Wildcat passes.
The ballanced offense produced 430 yards. 230 on the ground and 200 through the air. Mitch Wachendorf ran for 64 yards and a TD, while Kier Vander Wal gained 53 yards on 4 carries. QB Jeff Rasmussen was 12 for 16 passing for 129 yards and 3 TD's. Freshmen QB Brett Schreiner saw extensive action and was 3 for 6 passing for 71 yards and a TD. Vander Wal led the receiving corp with 4 receptions for 44 yards and a TD.

Cardinals Fly High in Home Opener 46 - 24
Washburn evened its 2009 record (1-0 in Region 6) wil a 46 - 24 over the Richardton - Taylor - Hebron Raiders.
The big story was the continued fine play of the Cardinals offensive line of Justin Petersen, Mark Petersen, James Cavo, Evan Eberle & Weston Deitz as they paved the way for 304 yards rushing on 54 carries. Senior Mitch Wachendorf carried 30 times for 171 yards. QB Jeff Rasmussen added another 129 yards and blistered to Raider defense for 190 yards passing.
Washburn's defense forced to Raider turnovers, the last was a 54 yard pass interception return by senior DE Justin Petersen. LB Mitch Wachendorh led the team with 10 tackles while Soph. DE Monty Johnson had two QB. Sacks.
Next week the Cardinals will host the Center - Stanton Wildcats.

Cardinals Come Up Short In A Wild Season Opener
Washburn traveled to Steele last Friday to challege one of the Region 1 title favorites in the season opener.
The Carsdinals jumped out to a 14 - 0 lead before the Pirates started to mount their comeback.
At the half the score was deadlocked at 22. Both teams made some adjustments at the half to slow the offenses down, but Kidder County was able to take the lead late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Pirates as they scored twice to the Cardinals one TD to seal a 44 - 30 victory.
QB Jeff Rasmussen carved up the Kidder County defense for 390 yards passing (a single game Washburn school record). Senior receiver Ashwin Weinman & Kier Vander Wal had great games as they each caught 6 passes for 153 & 149 yards respectively. Senior RB rushed for 107 yards and scored 10 points.
Washburn's defensive leaders were Jeff Rasmussen (14 tackles), LB Mitch Wachendorf (12 tackles),sophomore Evan Eberle (11 tackles), and senior DE Justin Petersen (7 tackles)
The Cardinals and Pirates combined for 1, 074 yards of offense in the action packed contest.
