Williamsport Team:
Capitol 3 New Castle 0
Capitol got their tournament started with a hard fought 3-0 victory over New Castle, behind a no-hit pitching effort of Nick Sayers. Early in the game hits were scarce for both team's as New Castle's Kyle Adams seemed intent on matching Sayers. Finally in the top of the 3rd, Kenny Panella got the offense going with a line drive between short and 3rd for the first hit of the game. Two batters later, Sayers hit a 3-2 fastball well over the right-center field fence to put Captiol on the board 2-0. That would be all the offense Sayers would need. With New Castle trying to work the pitch count, he kept pouring in 1st pitch strike after 1st pitch strike and eventually struck out 11 batters while only surrender 1 walk. Capitiol would strand runners in the 4th and 5th innings, as New Castle kept making the plays and the pitches it needed to stay within striking distance. Wayne Lamarche led off the top of the 6th by hitting a solo home run to end the scoring for the night. It was a good effort against a young and well coached New Castle team. Capitol will now face Canal in the next round.
Canal 5 Capitol 3
Capitol lost a heartbreaker to Canal 5-3 Thursday night at Midway. The game started off strong for Capitol as Kenny Panella dropped a base hit into left field to start the game. 2 batters later, Nick Sayers hit a bomb on the first pitch he saw to stake Capitol to a 2-0 lead. Jake Minka went to work on the mound and pitched beautifully all night. Center fielder Panella threw out a runner trying to go 1st to 3rd on a single to end an inning. Nick Sayers took a ground ball up the middle, stepped on 2nd and fired to first to end another. Canal finally got on the board with a HR and sac fly that tied the game. The scored stayed 2-2 until Minka helped himself with a line drive hit into right field in the top of the 6th. After moving to second on a passed ball, Mike Delpizzo hit a bullet into center field. Minka never hesitated coming around third and beat the high throw to put Capitol up 3-2. In the bottom of the 6th, Canal led off with a double. After a great play by third basemen Dominic Cicconi Canal struck again. With 2 outs, they hit a perfectly placed fly ball into right center. Both Panella and right fielder Marty Murphy broke and both layed out, only coming up just short of ending the game. Minka beared down and got Canal's Brian Zweir to a 3-2 count. Zweir took the 3-2 offering and hit over the centerfield wall to end the game. It was a great game played by 2 outstanding teams. Capitol will have to advance through the loser's bracket starting Saturday.
Capitol 14 Midway 9
Capitol's offense finally got on track vs interleague rival Midway. Leadoff batter Kenny Panella got things going with a single. With Panella on third base, Capitol got on the board with a sac fly off the bat of Jake Minka. With two outs, Capitol got back to back to back hits from Mike Delpizzo, Wayne Lamarche and Chris Argo to jump out to a 4-0 lead. After starting pitching Nick Sayers got through the top of the first without yeilding a run, Kyle Cox led off the 2nd with a single. Two batters later Sayers lofted a fly ball over the centerfield fence to put Capitol up 6-0. It appeared the game was going to be all Capitol, until Midway fired back with a 7 spot in the bottom, keyed by a 2 out grand slam off the bat of Adam Gerderman. Fortunately, Capitol's offense was not done. Tommy Bowers and Marty Murphy got 2 singles to start the next inning. After an out, Panella got his 2nd hit of the game to tie the game. Ryan Campbell's walk loaded the bases. Up came Sayers, who hit a no doubt about it shot over the left centerfield wall for a grand slam. After a Jake Minka walk, Lamarche then hit his 2nd home run of the tournament to put Capitol up 13-7. Lamarche then went to work on the mound. Over the next 4 innings, he would make that lead hold up as he scattered 4 hits while only walking 1 batter. Midway's Matt Buckery supplied some fireworks in the 5th by hitting a monster shot of his own to pull Midway within 4. That would be as close as they got. Argo and Murphy's 2nd hit of the game plated an extra insurance run and closed out the scoring. Capitol moves on to face Newark National.
Newark National 9 Capitol 6
Capitol's drive towards a District II crown ended tonight against Newark National. National came out firing with 3 straight hits in the top of the first, concluded by a 3 run home run by Dennis Robinson. Not to be out done, Capitol answered with a 3 run 1st of their own. Ryan Campbell hit the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to put Capitol on the board. Jake Minka, Nick Sayers and Wayne Lamarche all worked walks before Chris Argo lined a 2 on 2 out double to tie the game. Niether team scored in the 2nd. In the 3rd, National got to work. Robinson led off with his 2nd line shot home run, and added another on a hit by Brandon Dooley. In the fourth, National added 2 more and things were looking bleak as Dooley sent a deep fly ball into left center field. Capitol's Kenny Panella found the fence reached back and robbed him of a home run for the 3rd out of the inning, keeping Capitol within striking distance. Tommy Bowers led off the 4th with a walk, followed by Panella getting hit by a pitch. Nick Sayers hit a hard single to left that scored both as Panella flew around the bases from first to take advantage of a miscue by the left fielder. Back to back hits from Argo and Marty Murphy in the 5th pulled Capitol to within a run at 7-6. With two outs, National took advantage of a walk and an error to keep the inning alive. Both runners scored on a double. With Capitol only able to muster a walk in the bottom of the 6th, their tournament ended. Chris Argo(.667) led the team in hitting for the tournament and Nick Sayers batted .417 with 4 home runs to lead to team. Kenny Panella led off all tourney long, getting on base consistently and running down everything he could get to in CF getting 11 put outs and throwing out a runner in a key spot vs Canal. Catchers Wayne Lamarche and Mike Delpizzo were rocks behind the plate not letting anything get past them. Capitol pitchers(Sayers,Minka, Lamarche, Kyle Cox and Delpizzo) only issued 7 walks in the 4 games played.
