The AAU Girls' Basketball Program was established in 1972 as part of the AAU Junior Olympic program. Prior to 1972, the AAU Men's and Women's Committee conducted basketball championships, which included a single junior division. The National Championships started in two       age divisions (15u &18u) and have expanded to nine (10u through 18u) plus the Junior Olympic Games, the NICs (National Invitational Championships, now called Division II National Championships) and the 10 thru 13 Western Championship. In 2003, 751 teams competed for ten AAU Girls' Basketball National Championship crowns, with 288 additional teams playing in our D-II National Championships.

The Capitals are committed to assisting female student athletes ages 11 through 16 in improving their individual basketball skills by providing knowledgeable coaching along with the opportunity to play with and against the highest level of competition. An equally important goal of the club is to develop character, teamwork, and sportsmanship in an enjoyable basketball environment. Players also develop new friendships established through the travel and competitive experience.

The Albany Capitals also provide those girls who wish to pursue basketball in college the opportunity to demonstrate their basketball abilities at AAU tournaments attended by college coaches and recruiters. In this regard, the Capitals participate in tournaments in an eleven state region consisting of New England and the Middle Atlantic States as well as in National AAU tournaments.

The American Eagles Girls Basketball Club, Cohoes, New York, has completed its fifteenth season, the fourteenth under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), and we are member of the Eastern Girls Basketball Association. It has been very gratifying to watch the girls grow athletically, physically and socially over the years. The knowledge, skills and abilities of each girl have been enhanced by the club's program. The degree of that enhancement is determined by the amount of commitment of each individual girl.
