Averill Park Youth Basketball offers both instructional and competitive basketball programs for boys and girls in grades one through eight who are residents of the Averill Park Central School District. Our programs provide all children of all skill levels the opportunity to learn the game of basketball, have fun and make new friends. In the ten years APYB has been providing this service to the community, our membership has grown to include over 400 boys and girls.
On the competitive side, we are affiliated with the Capital District Girls Basketball League, CYO leagues, and independent leagues throughout the greater Capital District. Membership in these leagues offer our players the chance to face future Division 1 and 2 middle-school and high-school athletes. In fact, our competitive program has a strong track record of graduating basketball players into the Averill Park modified, freshman, junior varsity and varsity school programs.
Since we are a not-for-profit, community-based organization, we depend on parents and individuals to provide instruction and coaching. Many of our coaches have a variety of skills - ranging from playing basketball in the driveway to playing in college. However, they all have several things in common - a desire to work with children, an enthusiasm for basketball, and guidance from our coaching program. This formal program consists of an instructional guide and teaching clinics which help our coaches and assistants learn how to run our programs. In fact, our coaching program has been developed through the cooperation of several of the Averill Park Central School District physical education instructors and basketball coaches. This unique combination of our program with the school programs offers our players the distinct advantage of consistent learning from grades one through twelve. It also helps the school coaches concentrate on developing advanced skills instead of using their time to teach fundamentals.
We strive to provide a quality program and positive experience for our members. Working closely with the school coaches is one example of that. And, growing membership and surveys of our player's parents confirm our success. We invite you and your children to join our basketball family and look forward to seeing you on the courts in the Fall.
