Elites back on St. John

When the Capital City Bass Elite Teams Series first visited Lake St. John in 2011, Randy Brown & Andrew Wilson won with 18 pounds and 1 ounce, mostly on top water fishing. When the Elite anglers return there for the February 16th Cypress Shootout out of Ferriday, two key factors could change the game.

One is the warm winter weather that anglers suspect might make the spawning surge they can capitalized on. The second is that high water has had the lake on lock down with no fishing pressure for a month. With the tournament for the first time here in February, fish will be full of eggs and a 20 pound plus bag is in the picture. Reports have been coming in and we expect a record breaking catch with limits as high as 24 pounds seen from some of our anglers. A front is due in the day of the tournament, but the teams that don't let it affect them mentally will still catch a good bag.

Lake St. John is loaded with structure to fish, as both banks of the lake are lined with docks and cypress trees. Teams will also find seawalls, grass beds, and brush piles located throughout the lake. The water is at a perfect level right now. Bigger females will be up tight on the banks or off in the deeper trees getting ready to spawn.

This will be the third time that the Capital City Bass Elite Teams Series has visted St. John. In 2012, Classic champions, Boyd Causey and George Gateley won the tournament at 14 pounds, 8 ounces. Troy David and Ryan Bergeron have the highest average finish in the two Cypress Shootout events with a 4th place avg. The avg. winning weight has been 16 pounds for us here the last two years on St. John, and it seems it will take alot more than that to win this year!

Teams can call (225) 397-2071 or email: capitalcitybass@yahoo.com to get on the tournament list, and get a better take-off position.
