Former NFL All Pro to Join Canyon Coaching Staff
When
the Canyon Comanche’s start spring football practice this week, there will be a
lot of new faces on the coaching staff, none bigger than that of Leroy
Irvin. Leroy Irvin was a member of the
Los Angeles Rams from 1980 to 1989. He played in the Pro Bowl in 1985 and 1986,
and was named all-pro four seasons (1981, '82, '85 and '86) as a cornerback and
punt returner. Leroy isn’t the only
former NFL player to join the Comanche staff.
Leroy’s former teammate with the Rams Lucious Smith, who also played
with the Chargers and Chiefs is now Canyon’s new strength and speed coach. Coming over along with these two former NFL
players, will be former Beckman Head Football Coach Fred Shambaugh, who will
take over as Defensive Coordinator.
Among his many accomplishments Coach Shambaugh guided the Patriots to
the C.I.F. finals in 2010 before stepping down to spend more time with
family. Coach Shambaugh will be bringing
with him his former defensive coordinator at Beckman Glen Fisher. Coach Fisher is also a former Head
Coach. In addition to these outstanding
coaches Canyon has also added Kyle Bell, Christian Carter, Josh Brakefield,
Jared Treanor and Cody Fisher all of whom have played at the college level.
Head Coach Brent McKee who will be returning for his 13th season is very excited about his new coaching staff. Last year, Coach McKee had to step away from the team after 5 games after being diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. Coach McKee is cleared to coach this year and is looking forward to being very competitive in the Century league with his new coaching Staff, and 27 returning lettermen.

Lose Moala Attends USC Junior Day
|
On Saturday, February 11, USC and Coach Lane Kiffin held its Junior Day, a group unofficial visit where over 100 of the West's top football prospects attended. Junior days typically include meetings with position coaches, coordinators, strength coaches, nutrition staff and academic advisers. The visitors take campus tours and/or attend a basketball game -- and might even participate in some serious football discussion. One of those prospects was Canyon’s very own Lose Moala, and below is his story.
My trip to University of Southern California’s Junior Day was a great learning experience. First we started off with a PowerPoint Presentation from Coach Lane Kiffin himself on the great histories of the greatest players that participated in USC's football program, and how they left their legacy behind. After that segment, we were introduced to the coaching staff. Then, we took a small tour of their weight room, team room, and Heritage Hall. They explained to us how important football is to their school. One thing, their strength and conditioning coach asked was "How many people work out?" and every junior raised their hand. Then the coached laughed and said, "See that's where you're all wrong, we don't work out, we train here at USC". Some people didn't get the message so he explained, that working out is doing what you want do, but training is doing what has to be done. That really inspired me to do what needs to be done to make me a better athlete, and not what "I" want to do. People around the nation might believe that USC is just a college for football fanatics, but that's where they're wrong. The athletic director Pat Haden repeated to us that it's called "College" Football not football college, this saying, told us that not only that they are serious about football, but they care more about you, getting your degree. These coaches gave us a lecture on how to get into the college and it opened my mind on how important an education is, and it changed my views on school. I learned a lot on this trip, not just about football but also about life. And I am thankful for the opportunity to attend Junior Day at a great University like USC. It really showed me that the coaches don't only care for their athletes performing their best on the field, but also in class!
