NPCA Invitational Tournament Information
Athletic Directors: To assist you in assisting me in the upcoming NPCA tournament, I have made these MS Excel files available for download. You can e-mail them back to me (NPCA@epix.net) or print them and fax me. The rosters should be completed in January (but are due by February 12); the seeding worksheet should be completed after your February 11 (12) game. If you have other games which could factor into the seeding, attach a note and fax me after those games. The newspaper contact information is optional; if you desire to have me send press releases to your local newspaper, I need to have a copy of this form on file. In Christian Service, Bob Eble II Handout: Tournament Forms and Information History of the NPCA Tournament North Pocono Christian Academy in Moscow established the NPCA Invitational Tournament in 1989. Mr. Lane Jones, boys’ basketball coach, wanted an end-of-season tournament to involved all those schools in northeastern Pennsylvania that played each other on a regular basis. Since the teams were not formally aligned in a league, the tournament would be similar to a league tournament. The inaugural tournament was tipped off on March 17-18, 1989. While the first tournament had only 7 boys’ participants, it was the overall plan of the tournament to involve a field of 8. To make room on the schedule for 3 games for each team, the squads were required to play 2 games on the opening day. From 1992 to 1995 the tournament also held a cheerleading competition. The 1994 and ‘95 competitions also saw individual competitions on Friday morning. The competition was curtailed due to a lack of qualified judges and scheduling changes. The 1994 tournament brought 2 significant changes. First, the tournament expanded to 3 days, Thursday through Saturday. Secondly, a 4-field girls’ bracket was added. North Pocono Christian Academy hosted the tournament and entered teams every year through 1997. While the school still operated in 1998 and 1999, they did not have enough players to enter a team. In 2000, the school put together a squad that participated mainly on a JV level and entered the tournament once again. Mr. Lane Jones successfully guided the first tournament through the 1995 season. Mr. Wally Kieselowsky took the helm of the North Pocono boys’ team and inherited the tournament directorship. In 2000, Lane Jones took over again and acquired the help of Mr. Bob Eble (Ebenezer Faith Christian) for future planning. Following the 2000 tournament, several changes were made to the tournament. First, the name of the tournament was changed to the Northeast Pennsylvania Christian Academy (NPCA) Tournament to better identify the participants, and also preserve the initials of the founding school. Secondly, the size of the field also grew to include 12 boys' and 8 girls’ teams. Thirdly, the main tournament venue was changed to Canaan Christian Academy in Lake Ariel because of the larger facility; North Pocono’s gym was also used for the opening day in the boys’ bracket. Beginning in 2002, the tournament added the 3 Western Wayne gymnasiums (elementary, middle, and high schools) and Trail’s End Camp for opening day games. This allowed up to 4 games to be played simultaneously. Friday and Saturday action continued at Canaan. In January 2005, Mr. Bob Eble joined the faculty of Canaan Christian Academy. This change of employment brought the tournament director “in house” with the host school for a smooth running of the tournament. In the 22 years of the tournament, 36 schools from 3 states (Pennsylvania, New York and Virginia) participated. Of those schools, there have been 11 different boys’ champions and 7 different girls’ champions. Snow has postponed the tournament and aspects of it on several occasions. The most drastic change occurred in March 1996 when the tournament moved the bracket one week later. Because of previous commitments, Twin Tiers Baptist High School could not participate. KCEA Fine Art competition was also scheduled for a week later and it was doubtful if Ebenezer and other schools would be able to participate in basketball. After some long hours of rescheduling, the tournament was compressed to 2 days for both the girls’ and boys’ brackets. The cheerleading competition was a casualty of the weather. The 2001 tournament received several inches of snow on Friday, but games were played on schedule with minimal delay. While the first games of the morning were delayed by nearly 30 minutes, the tournament was back on schedule by mid-morning with little interruption. The 2002 tournament saw the most dramatic change in the schedule as 6 different venues were utilized on the opening day with 4 games being played simultaneously for 3 games in the afternoon and evening. The compressed schedule allowed all tournament games to be completed in 2 ½ days rather than the 3 days used in the previous year. Following the tournament, Lane Jones turned the leadership role over to Bob Eble who had steadily been taking on tournament responsibilities from 2000 to 2002. Bob Eble made his debut has tournament director for the 2003 extravaganza. To give him a headache on opening day, 6 inches of snow came on the early morning of March 6. Several last minute venue changes made travel easier, but East Stroudsburg Christian was forced to withdraw due to the weather. To contrast the 2003 tournament, 2004 featured 50-degree temperatures much to the delight of the tournament director. A last minute withdrawal in the girls’ bracket opened the way for the first home-school squad to participate as Binghamton LEAH (Loving Education at Home) hastily joined us for the event. A long winter broke in time for the 2005 tournament as major storms hit the Monday before and the Tuesday after the tournament. The tournament proceeded as scheduled with no weather related delays. A previously forecasted warm spell turned cold in early March 2006. The predicted rain became 4 inches of snow. The tournament proceeded as scheduled, with only Summit Christian not making their first round matchup. A mild winter followed by a cold 6 weeks prior to the tournament greeted the 2007 tournament. With only rain in the forecast for the opening day, all games proceeded as scheduled. In the 20th tournament, Attorney Nick Barna challenged the youth for future Christian service during the annual all-tournament chapel. Repeat champions reigned in both girls’ and boys’ brackets in 2008 for the first time since the 1998 tournament. Former coach (Canaan, Emmanuel, Cincinnatus, Baldwinsville) Steve Baley challenged the young people to future service for the Lord in the 2009 tournament chapel program. For the first time since 1999, the same school won both the girls’ and boys’ divisions as Canaan garnered their first boys’ championship (fourth overall) since 1995 and the girls notched their unprecedented fourth straight (six overall) title. Although 2½ feet of snow falling on Northeast PA just 8 days before the 2010 tournament, planning continued, the weather broke, and the tournament went off without a hitch. For the second time in tournament history we had repeat champions with both girl’s and boy’s teams from the same school.
