KA EHU KAI MISSION STATEMENT :

Mele, music or song, is an integral part of the Hawaiian culture. For those who have lived or spent time in Hawai'i knows of the mana, power, of mele.  How it has provide the Hawaiians a powerful vehicle for their oral traditions. Allowing them to pass down their history and culture from generation to generation in a form that touches the hearts of the Hawaiians and Hawaiians at heart.  With this in mind, Ka Ehu Kai, has a mission to touch those hearts and souls through our mele.

WHO KA HU KAI  IS :

We are based in San Lorenzo, California. Our band specializes in a unique blending of traditional and contemporary  Hawaiian music, Reggae, Polynesian, Jazz, Pop, Fusion and even a smidgen of Western (when inspired).

Tennyson A. Lum the son of Kumu Hula “Aunty” Ehulani Enoka Lum, who was a major influence in his musical talent at a very young age. While cleaning the house, she would often listen to Hawaiian music in the early mornings before Tennyson left for school. It was this early exposure to the music of his culture that sparked the musical passions in her son. Tennyson impressed his mother with other talents by teaching himself to play the Tahitian drums so his mother wouldn’t have to go out and look for other drummers. But Hawaiian music was and is now his only love. He remembers the times when he was only ten or eleven years old and spending Summers riding his bike in his Grandparent’s home in Waimanalo. They lived only two block's from the Pahinui’s. He remembers riding his bike past their house one day and heard some music coming from the backyard where Gabby and his band practiced. He skid to a stop and listened, mesmerized by the melodies. It was at that point Hawaiian music would be forever impressed in his life. 

For those who see Tennyson perform for the first time tend to think, “WOW! What talent! He could sit down with pretty much anyone and play a set of drums and not miss a beat!" True, and oh yeah, his Ukulele playing “Ain’t So Bad” either!

Tennyson formed Ka Ehu Kai Hawaiian Band in 1991. It was with his band he grew into the exciting, dynamic and yet down to earth entertainer that he is today. When you see Tennyson, or “Ten” as people would eventually call him, you immediately know the type of Hawaiian this man is.  He is a truly warm, kind, big hearted, fun loving, Never say die, keep's on ticking, for the Hawaiian culture and heritage...bruddah...Ten.

 A LITTLE ABOUT HUKILAU:

Hukilau was founded by three guys from Hawaii who were homesick for the local-style food they grew up on and the relaxed and festive island feel of places back in Hawai'i.

Kurt (Kapa'a, Kauai), Al (Ewa Beach, Oahu) and Eric (Hilo, Hawai'i) created the Hukilau and infused it with a taste of each of the three islands and the spirit of Aloha. Soon they were joined by Rodney Park, who added even more flavor.

At the Hukilau, you will be transported back to your favorite "plate-lunch" restaurant in small town Hawai'i, you will hear the strummings of live Hawaiian music like "uncle" used to play at family gatherings, and you will also be able to order tropical cocktails just like at the bars on Waikiki.

 AN ETERNAL BAPTISM IN THE ENDZONE

At five foot five and a buck fifty-five,
I’ve heard the doubt all of my life.
In Boy’s Club football, I read their looks,
“Another dreamer whose read too many books”.

But I loved to HIT, my only chance,
To show the coaches that I could “dance”.
I won their hearts, but not their minds,
Most Inspirational, just to be kind???

I got cut during Hell Week, in ninth grade,
“You’ve got the heart, not the body, I’m afraid…”
Words that echoed deep in my soul,
“KEEP FIGHTING BACK!” became my inner voice’s goal.

Finally in High School, I made the team,
Playing under Friday Night Lights was living a childhood dream.
Although I got in sparingly, I got in my licks,
Earned some respect, had a lot of kicks.

In JUCO ball, the coaches loved my style,
“THE FALCON” on special teams, there was no denial!
Believe it or not, a “walk on” at San Diego State!
That dream lasted till I pulled my hammie in the 40 and did 5.8!

So for 24 years, the dream went dormant,
The game eluded me, but the need to be part of it was torment!
I found the Oregon Football League, and two seasons went by,
The enthusiasm as a seven year old once again was alive!

Alas, in The Dalles, after 45 years…
The fog of doubt lifted, washed away by sweet tears.
An eternal baptism in that glorious end zone,
On a five yard run, I stood all alone,
Finally, finally, my seeds had been sown!!!
Lifetime rushing stats:
2 carries,
12 yards,
6.0 yards per carry average,
1 Touchdown!
COST: PRICELESS!
Thank you Semi-Professional Football for allowing one old man to live out a lifetime dream!
