Calhoun trounces Dade Co
Calhoun High extended its region winning streak to 53 games in big fashion Friday night at Phil Reeve Stadium in a 41-14 victory over Dade County.
The Jackets set the tone early on for their domination all night - keeping the ball for eight minutes during the first quarter on their first possession en route to a 6-0 lead. Calhoun then pounced on the Wolverines for 25 points in the second quarter and never looked back.
"Our defense played great - gave us great field position," Jacket Coach Hal Lamb said after watching his team up its record to 8-1 overall, 4-0 in region.
"We did clinch the subregion championship tonight, and we'll be looking to clinch the No. 1 seed in the region next week."
Calhoun - which has now outscored Dade 147-14 in the last three meetings between the schools - closes out the regular season with a trip to LaFayette next Friday seeking its seventh straight region title before beginning the state playoffs on Nov. 16.
The Jackets moved ahead 6-0 with 2:18 left in the first quarter when Adam Urbano - who finished with 63 yards on 14 carries - ran the final two yards.
Early in the second quarter, quarterback Tre Lamb connected on a five-yard pass to Rhett McGowan three plays after a 20-yard toss to Jimmie Broomfield.
Dade fell behind 14-0 with 6:32 left in the second quarter after snapping the ball on a punt into the endzone for a safety.
Urbano's second touchdown of the night upped it to 21-0 after he took a lateral from Lamb, who was tripped up at the line but kept his composure and made an accurate toss to Urbano.
Andy Elakman kicked a 30-yard field goal with 1:28 left in the half for a 24-0 lead after a fumble recovery by Eric McDaniel.
The last touchdown of the half came with 35 seconds left when the Wolves failed on a fourth-down conversion in their territory. Lamb connected shortly after on a 30-yard pass to Derek Ramsey (who caught four passes for 55 yards). Calhoun moved ahead 38-0 on a 45-yard pass from Lamb to
McGowan, who finished with four catches for 72 yards. Elakman closed the Jackets' scoring with a 33-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Dade scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including one with 17 seconds left on a 53-yard pass from Nick Bowden to Cody McNabb.
