Calhoun rips Indians
Homecoming proved no distraction Friday night for Calhoun’s powerful football team which crushed Region 7-AA North co-leader Chattooga 52-12.
In the process, coach Hal Lamb’s Yellow Jackets took sole possession of the subregion top spot at 3-0. The No. 4 state-ranked squad advanced to 7-1 overall.
“Our kids came out ready to play,” Lamb praised. “We played particularly well in the first half. It puts us in the driver’s seat. We just need to get these last two games (heavy favorites over Dade County and LaFayette) and get a No. 1 seed hopefully.”
Chattooga coach John Starr appeared somewhat shell-shocked as he saw the visitors fall behind at halftime 32-6. It dropped to 5-3 overall but still is in the hunt for one of the two North state playoff berths.
“They’re just a solid team,” Starr said of the Jackets. “They are solid in everything.”
Starr related, “We had a plan to try to slow Urbano (running back Adam). Then Lamb (quarterback Tre) took us apart.”
Despite the Indians’ focus on Urbano, he still scored three touchdowns. The senior rushed for 96 yards on 17 carries. Lamb accounted for three touchdowns – including two throwing and one running.
Lamb completed 15-of-22 passes for 156 yards an no interceptions. Rhett McGowan caught five passes for 70 yards and Derek Ramsey seven for 55.
McGowan displayed Calhoun’s most versatile performance. On defense, he intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.
“Talk about a competitor and somebody with instincts, that’s Rhett,” Lamb praised. “He’s a winner.”
Calhoun scored touchdowns on its first three possessions – getting the third one early in the second period.
Those TDs came in order from Lamb to Ramsey, 10 yards; and Urbano, 25 and 1-yard runs. Andy Elakman booted a 44-yard field goal and three extra points – building a 24-0 lead.
Chattooga cut the deficit to 24-6 on Rashad Ramsey’s 20-yard run.
Calhoun closed the half’s scoring on Urbano’s 11-yard run. It was set up on Lamb’s 22-yard toss to Ramsey which put the ball at the 20.
At the start of the second half, Senorise Perry scooted 68 yards to paydirt for the Indians.
The Jackets then reeled off 20 unanswered points. Those came from Lamb, 1-yard run; Jimmie Broomfield, 29-yard pass from Lamb; and Deon Kennedy, 64-yard run.
Perry topped all pedestrians with 129 yards on 11 carries. Kennedy on only two totes added 65 yards for two attempts.
Calhoun’s balanced attack showed 175 yards passing and 169 passing for 344 total. Chattooga showed 291 running but a mere 18 throwing for 309.
