Jackets hold head high in loss
On an unfortunately fitting cloudy Saturday afternoon, the 2007 Calhoun High baseball team gathered in right field.
They watched as head coach Chip Henderson solemnly approached the team with the Class AA runner-up trophy.
After a season that had success after success lead them to the No. 1 ranking in the state and a spot in the state championship series, their trail had come to an end.
With Holy Innocents forcing a game three to decide the title, the Golden Bears overtook the home team to win 11-1 in five innings.
Everyone was expecting us to win the state championship, Calhoun pitcher Charlie Culberson said. We were No. 1 all year until today.
Everybody knew that we should have won it but we cant do anything about it.
Despite the aftermath, it was the sum of the whole that the Yellow Jackets (34-4) were thankful for and the fact that for a large portion of the year, they had achieved success.
First up, this team has been unbelievable, Josh Smoker said. Its been great to play with them and great to play for them.
We would have liked to had won it all, but thats baseball.
Smoker, who along with Culberson, Brodie Pullen and Curt Welch make up the only seniors on the team, said that it was the friends he made and the friends he got closer to during his time with Calhoun that hell always remember.
Culberson, who took the loss in Saturdays contest, had little remorse for what he and his teammates had done this season.
Ive played with a lot of great players and had a lot of fun doing it, he said. Im walking out of here with a smile on my face because I had a lot of fun playing baseball here.
Junior first baseman Nick Davison, who had a pair of home runs in the opening game of the Holy Innocents series on Friday, wasnt sure exactly how he would remember this season.
I really dont know, he said. When I look back at it, I would probably say that we had a great season overall. It just would have been even better if we could have capped it off with a state championship.
As a junior, Davison said that he would absolutely look forward to coming back next season.
We should be pretty good, he said. Well just have to find us some pitchers, but weve got some young kids who should help us out.
Senior center fielder Curt Welch agreed that the only blemish was Saturdays run-rule shortened loss.
When I look back, Ill look back at this game every time
first and Ill probably get sick at my stomach because we didnt win it, he said. But then Ill think about all the good times we had and even practices
Just to look back and be able to smile and laugh about how much of a good time it was
will make me happy.
And that will be the mantra of the 2007 Yellow Jackets. Though the final stop on their trip wasnt paved with gold, the path that they traveled has made them all the richer.
