Bailey_2

The Calgary Wolfpack met their old rival the Edmonton Stallions on Sunday afternoon to decide the 26th AFL Championship. The Stallions stormed out to an early lead behind some strong special teams play. As a result, the Wolfpack was playing catch-up the entire game and just ran out of time with the Stallions holding on for a 39-32 victory and their 2nd AFL Championship.

QB Darryl Leason finished the game 37 of 68 for 505 yards, 3TD’s and 3 INT’s….2 of which were returned for costly Stallion touchdowns. WR Hugues Audet was Leason’s favourite target hauling in 9 receptions for 150 yards, 1TD and 1 2-pt conversion. SB Terry Eldridge caught 6 passes for 122 yards, many keeping drives alive while absorbing some massive hits! SB Evan Kaluta came up with 5 receptions for 51 yards and 1TD while SB Michael Leason grabbed 7 passes for 97 yards and 1TD. RB Rod Bailey scored the Wolfpack’s lone TD on the ground.

INT he returned 25 yards. CB Robb Sherman also had an INT. DT Jim Chappelle (2 solo, 1 assist, 1 tackle for loss) and DE Jim Lapointe (3 solo, 1 assist, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack) controlled the line of scrimmage. P/K Tom Dixon had a huge day punting the team out of trouble with 6 punts for 258 yards, an average of 43.0 yards/punt.

The Calgary Wolfpack would like congratulate the Edmonton Stallions on their victory and we wish them the best of luck in the National Championship game! Wolfpack Survive Gator Frenzy

The Calgary Wolfpack headed into their playoff match-up with the Calgary Gators on a roll. The team had marched off 5 wins in a row…..one of which was a 65-7 romp over the Gators just 3 weeks ago. A very different Gators team showed up at McMahon Saturday night and gave the Wolfpack all it could handle. When was over….the Wolfpack emerged bloodied but unbroken coming away with a hard fought 19-3 victory.

The Wolfpack offence got off to a bit of a slow start when RB Sean Ahronson went down with a knee injury but slowly worked things out to dominate the time of possession. QB Darryl Leason completed 23 of 41 pass attempts for 279 yards, 2TD’s and 2 INT’s. Leason also ran for 70 yards on just 5 carries and ended the game as the Wolfpack’s leading rusher. WR Theon James led the team with 69 yards receiving on 4 receptions. SB Evan Kaluta hauled in 5 passes for 56 yards while team mate WR Tim Johnson caught 5 passes for 54 yards. WR Scott Sargent caught 4 passes for 52 yards including 2 TD’s. RB Miguel Ceja ground out 35 yards on 7 carries and caught 1 pass for 10 yards.

The Wolfpack defence was tough all night limiting the Gators to a mere 3 points. S Rod Bailey had 4.5 tackles (3 solo, 3 assists) and 1 INT which he returned 36 yards! DHB Dwayne Ross also recorded 4.5 tackles (4 solo, 1 assist) while LB Jon Scratch chipped in with 4.5 tackles (3 solo, 3 assists) of his own. DT Jim Chappelle had 2 solo tackles including 1 for loss and 1 sack. DB Haroon Khan led a smothering Wolfpack coverage team with 2 big special teams tackles.

The win sets up a Semi-final match-up with the Grande Prairie Drillers. The game is scheduled for Sunday August 23, 1:00pm at Legion Field in Grande Prairie.

Wolfpack Closes Regular Season With 5th Win In A Row!

The Calgary Wolfpack closed the regular season on the road in Red Deer Saturday night still having a shot at 1st place in the AFL standings. Anyone who is a fan of old fashioned defensive football…..probably didn’t enjoy this game!! The Buccaneers brought their A+ game with their own playoff spot on the line. An old fashioned wild west shootout took place at Great Chief Park delighting the good sized crowd. When it was over however, Bucs fans went home disappointed when the Wolfpack fought back for a 56-49 victory!!

The Wolfpack offence had another great game amassing 611 total yards!! QB Darryl Leason had another great game finishing 30 of 41 for 462 yards, 5TD’s and 2 INT’s. Leason also helped out the running game with 5 carries for 60 yards and 1 TD. SB Michael Leason tied his own team record with 14 receptions for 226 yards and 1 TD. WR Scott Sargent hauled in 4 passes for 69 yards and 2 TD’s. SB Evan Kaluta recorded 6 catches for 83 yards and a 2 point conversion. WR Hugues Audet and RB Sean Ahronson also caught touchdowns. Ahronson had a big day with 3 receptions for 42 yards and 85 yards rushing on 15 carries, including a TD. FB Matt Squires had 4 yards rushing, 22 yards receiving and a huge kickoff return of 63 yards!

The Wolfpack defence had a tough night trying to contain a surprisingly dynamic Buccaneers defence. LB Jon Scratch led the team with 5.5 tackles (3 solo, 5 assists) and shared in a tackle for loss. DHB Dwayne Ross came up with 5 tackles (4 solo, 2 assists) and grabbed his first interception of the season. DT Sheldon Southgate had a strong effort with 4 tackles (3 solo, 2 assists) and 2 tackles for loss while his line mate DE Gunnar Godhe added 3 tackles (2 solo, 2 assists) and 1.5 tackles for loss. S Rod Bailey had 3.5 tackles (3 solo, 1 assists) and 1.5 tackles for loss.

With the close of the regular season, playoff positions are now set with the Wolfpack holding down 3rd place in the standings. This means that the 6-2 Wolfpack will host the 2-6 Calgary Gators in one AFL Quarterfinal while the 5-3 Edmonton Stallions will host the 4-3-1 Parkland Panthers in the other.

Wolfpack Clears Out Swamp
Ahronson_1

The Calgary Wolfpack met our long time rival Calgary Gators on Saturday night in a must win situation to keep our hopes alive to still have a shot at capturing 1st place in the AFL standings at the end of the year. Having lost 2 of our last 3 games to the Gators going back to 2007, a little payback was also on our minds. The result was an almost flawless game for the Pack that saw us crush the Gators 65-7 and improving our record to 5-2 on the year.

Wolfpack QB Darryl Leason picked apart the Gators at will. Darryl finished the game completing 32 of 41 pass attempts and a new AFL record 8 TD passes!! SB Michael Leason was on the receiving end of 4 of those Touchdown’s!! Michael finished the night with 11 receptions for 172 yards and 4 Touchdown’s including a long catch of 41 yards. SB Evan Kaluta hauled in 7 passes for 79 yards and 1 TD. WR Tim Johnson, FB Matt Squires and RB Miguel Ceja also caught a touchdown pass each. RB Sean Ahronson, in his first start at RB had a solid game with 52 yards rushing on 9 carries and also catching 3 passes for 40 yards! Kicker Tom Dixon hit on all 8 extra point attempts and finished 2 of 4 of field goal attempts including a season long 44 yard effort!

The Wolfpack defence wasn’t on the field much….but when they were they made things happen. DT Jim Chappelle led all players with 3.5 tackles (3 solo, 1 assist) and 1 tackle for loss. LB Lazar Velev finished with 3 solo tackles and also blocked a Gator punt in the 4th quarter. LB Pablo Martinez finished up with 2.5 tackles (2 solo, 1 assist), a 34 yard return of an INT and also recovered an onside kick! DHB Leroy Favel also returned an INT 16 yards.

The Wolfpack head into the final bye week of season on a roll having won 4 games in a row after our terrible 1-2 start. The final week of the AFL season will determine playoff rankings and the Wolfpack is right in the hunt for 1st place and that valuable home field advantage through the playoffs!! In order to have a shot we must knock off the Red Deer Buccaneers in Red Deer. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm, Saturday August 8 at Great Chief Park.

Wolfpack Hang On To Win Thriller!

The Calgary Wolfpack rolled our 2009 road show into a smoking hot Lloydminster on Saturday. The first place Vandals were looking to end any thoughts of the Wolfpack contending for first place. The first quarter was scoreless with both sides simply feeling each other out. The second quarter was all Wolfpack taking a 15-0 lead into halftime. The 3rd quarter started well with the Pack extending our lead to 18-0 but there is a reason the Vandals were 5-0 coming into the game….cue the comeback!! The Vandals dominated the 4th quarter charging back to take a 20-18 lead with under 4 minutes left in the game. The Wolfpack finally managed to wake up late and with 2:01 left on the clock, took back the lead 21-20 on a Tom Dixon 42 yard FG!! The Vandals weren’t done though. They quickly drove the ball down to inside the Wolfpack 20 yard line with under a minute remaining in the game. Rather than attempt a game winning field goal, the Vandals tried to get even closer….a mistake that cost them. CB Robb Sherman read the ball all the way and stepped in front of the pass to record his 3rd INT of the year and preserve the victory for the Wolfpack!

The Wolfpack rolled for 466 yards offence but except for the 2nd quarter, had problems finishing with points. QB Darryl Leason finished 26 of 46 for 349 yards and 2 TD’s. WR Tim Johnson led all receivers with 7 receptions for 78 yards. SB Michael Leason hauled in 6 passes for 87 yards and 1 TD. SB Evan Kaluta grabbed 5 passes for 69 yards. WR Scott Sargent caught 3 passes for 55 yards and 1TD. RB Sean Ahronson had 2 carries for 17 yards and 1 reception for 35 yards. RB Jeff Williams put in a strong days effort with 18 carries for 76 yards and 2 receptions for 9 yards. PK Tom Dixon hit on both of his field goal attempts, including a 42 yard effort to secure the win!!

The Wolfpack defence had a strong day forcing 5 Vandal turnovers at key moments of the game. Leading the charge on defence was LB Lazar Velev with 9 tackles (7 solo, 4 assists) 2.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. LB Jon Scratch had 5 tackles (4 solo, 2 assists) 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, 1 INT with a 40 yard return and recovered a fumble!! DB Justyn Wilson had 4 tackles and an INT. DB Robb Sherman had 1.5 tackles and a game saving INT which he returned 19 yards.

The 4-2 Wolfpack will now prepare to take on the 2-4 Calgary Gators….a game with massive playoff implications. Game time is 7:00pm Saturday July 25 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

The Wolfpack offence piled up 584 yards against the Bucs. The Wolfpack defence played strong & physical keeping the Bucs offence out of the end-zone all evening. Wolfpack Wins Ugly

The Calgary Wolfpack evened our record at 2-2 on the season following a nasty 24-21 victory over our rival the Edmonton Stallions on Saturday night. The game was a penalty filled affair with neither side able to maintain any flow on offence. The Wolfpack looked to be comfortably in charge with a 24-7 lead late in the 4th quarter only to see that lead evaporate due to mistakes & penalties. The Wolfpack hung on to the win only after the Stallions botched a 37 yard field goal attempt in the last minute of the game!

The offence struggled to find any rhythm on the evening. QB Darryl Leason finished 18 of 38 for 337 yards, 2 TD’s and 1 INT. SB Evan Kaluta had a big night hauling in 7 passes for 124 yards. Rookie SB Theon James had an impressive debut with 3 catches for 70 yards and 1 TD. RB Jeff Williams was a dual threat with 61 yards rushing on 9 carries and 64 yards receiving in 4 catches. FB Matt Squires scored twice, once on the ground and once through the air. PK Tom Dixon hit all 3 extra points and hit a 19 yard game winning FG late in the 4th quarter.

The defence played strong and for the most part was able to contain a powerful Stallions offence. CB Rob Sakires led all tacklers with 5.5 (5 solo, 1 assist) and 1 KD. DE Jim Lapointe chipped in with 4 tackles (3 solo, 2 assists). CB Robb Sherman had 3.5 tackles (3 solo, 1 assist) and 1 tackle for loss. DHB Jack Braybrook also had 3.5 tackles (3 solo, 1 assist) and 1 INT which he returned 27 yards. DT Sheldon Southgate had 2 tackles including a sack and a forced fumble. WR Jesse Krsa had a big game on special teams with 2.5 tackles (2 solo, 1 assist) as well as recovering an onside kick.

The Wolfpack head into the bye week tied with 4 other teams at 2-2. The second half of the AFL season will begin on Saturday July 11, 6:00pm, Great Chief Park in Red Deer when the Pack will take on the 0-4 Buccaneers.

Wolfpack Drops 2nd In A Row!

The Calgary Wolfpack rolled into Spruce Grove on Saturday night expecting a tough game with the Parkland Panthers. Little did they know how tough it would be. Both defences were ferocious and Parkland was able to disrupt the usually powerful Wolfpack offence for most of the game. When the sun set, the Wolfpack found ourselves on the losing end of a 14-7 battle, dropping our record to 1-2 on the year!

The Wolfpack defence did their job all night, containing a powerful Panthers running attack time and time again. Leading the way was LB Jon Scratch with 10.5 tackles (7 solo, 7 assists). DE Jim Lapointe had a big game as well with 5 tackles (3 solo, 4 assists), 1 tackle for loss and a huge sack! DT Sheldon Southgate had 3.5 tackles (2 solo, 3 assists) and shared in a tackle for loss. DB Ken Watt had 3 tackles (2 solo, 2 assists) and 3 big knockdowns. CB Robb Sherman chipped in with 2.5 tackles and 1 INT.

The Wolfpack offence was ragged all night long. One bright spot was the play of RB Miguel Ceja who was filling in for an injured Jeff Williams. Miguel had 95 yards on 14 carries and also caught 2 passes for 8 yards. QB Darryl Leason was under fire from the Parkland pass rush all night and finished 25 of 46 for 311 yards and 3 INT’s. Leason did score the Wolfpack’s only TD on a 3 yard carry in the 4th quarter. SB Evan Kaluta led all receivers with 6 receptions for 74 yards. WR Scott Sargent had another strong game with 5 receptions for 83 yards. SB Rod Bailey caught 3 balls for 56 yards and Rookie SB Sean Ahronson hauled in 3 passes for 35 yards in his first action of the season.

The Calgary Wolfpack will now regroup and prepare for their first home game of the season. The Wolfpack will face the powerful Edmonton Stallions next Saturday June 27, 7:00pm at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

Wolfpack Falls Short

The Calgary Wolfpack rolled into Grande Prairie Saturday night for a matchup with the Drillers. The Wolfpack started slowly letting the Drillers build a 14-1 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Wolfpack stormed back in the 2nd quarter only to give up a last second touchdown to head into the half down 24-17. The Drillers dominated the 3rd quarter taking a commanding 41-17 lead only to see the Wolfpack storm back yet again to take the lead 42-41 with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Too many Wolfpack mistakes however saw the Drillers pull in front again and eventually hang on for a 54-49 victory.

The Wolfpack offence got off to a slow start with some early turnovers. QB Darryl Leason finished 33 of 64 for 401 yards, 5TD’s and 2 INT’s. WR Hugues Audet caught 8 passes for 99 yards. DB Jack Braybrook   had a big game with 6.5 tackles (6 solo, 1 assist), 1 knockdown and 1 fumble recovery. DB Dwayne Ross contributed with 4 tackles (2 solo, 4 assists) and 1 sack. Defence Hit
Sunday, June 7

The Calgary Wolfpack opened up our 2009 AFL season with a solid 53-7 victory over the scrappy Edmonton Seahawks at Foote Field in Edmonton on Sunday. The Wolfpack were missing some key players such as of All-Star SB Mike Leason, All-Star WR Hugues Audet and 2008 Co-Defensive MVP Pablo Martinez. As a result some line-up changes were in order.

The offence started slowly but picked up momentum after a couple of series and never looked back cranking out 510 yards. Picking up where he left off in last years National Championship game, RB Jeff Williams served notice to the AFL that the Wolfpack does indeed have a running game. Jeff had 174 yards on only 7 carries, including a spectacular 108 yard TD run in the 2nd quarter!! Jeff finished with 2 rushing TD’s and also hauled in 3 passes for 59 yards for 233 all purpose yards on the day! Reigning AFL MVP Darryl Leason had a bit of a rocky start but settled down to put up some impressive numbers. Darryl finished 21 of 38 for 268 yards, 5TD’s and 1 INT. SB Evan Kaluta led all receivers with 5 receptions for 65 yards and 1 TD. WR Scott Sargent hauled in 4 passes for 57 yards, including a 36 yard TD   . SB Terry Eldridge, FB Matt Squires and WR Jesse Krsa also hauled in TD receptions.

The Wolfpack defence was very solid all game long forcing 3 Seahawk turnovers and coming up with a huge goal line stand  in the 2nd half!! Leading the way in an impressive debut was DT Jim Chappelle. Jim finished the game with 5.5 tackles and 1 sack!! LB Lazar Velev had his usual solid game with 5 tackles, 1.5 for loss and shared in a sack. CB Rob Sakires came up hard on run support and was rewarded with 4 tackles including 1 for loss. 2nd year LB Jon Scratch was seemingly everywhere finishing with 4 tackles and a shared sack. CB Robb Sherman and MLB Sheldon Southgate each had an INT while DB Jack Braybrook recovered a Seahawk fumble. DB Ken Watt chipped in on special teams with 5 punt returns for 118 yards.

The Wolfpack now face a short week to prepare for the 1-0 Grande Prairie Drillers. The Wolfpack play in Grande Prairie Saturday June 13, 7:00pm at Legion Field.

4th Annual Jamie Ferguson Memorial Flag Game

It was a gorgeous day on Sunday for the 4th Annual Jamie Ferguson Memorial Flag game at the Acadia Fields. Unfortunately....the Wolfpack suffered from a bad case of dropped passes and despite making 3 interceptions, allowed the Seminoles to get out to a 24-0 halftime lead. We managed to settle down in the 2nd half as QB Robb Sherman led us to the endzone twice to make the final score 48-14 Seminoles. Congratulations to RB Joel Gueverra who came up with a bunch of huge catches and was named the games Offence MVP. OL Doug Robertshaw was named the "Heart & Soul" award winner. Good luck to the Seminoles who now head off to a  tournament in Vancouver!! Now the real work begins for the Calgary Wolfpack as training camp starts Tuesday May 5, 7:00pm at James Fowler High School.
