Heartbreak in Waterloo

The Calgary Wolfpack rolled into the Kitchener/Waterloo area with spirits high, ready to tangle with the Tri-City Outlaws for the 2011 CMFL National Championship. The game was a hard hitting affair with neither team able to establish a clear advantage until the 4th quarter. The Outlaws led 7-1 after the 1st quarter and held a 10-8 lead at halftime. The Wolfpack had a chance to take the lead with 2 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter but turned the ball over on the Outlaws 1 yard line! The Wolfpack scored on our first possession of the 2nd half to take a 14-10 lead but the Outlaws answered before the end of the quarter to bounce back in front 17-14. In the 4th quarter, the strong Outlaws running game finally wore down our tired defence and kept our offence on the bench, adding 2 more touchdowns in the process. Final score Outlaws 31 Wolfpack 14

Hats off to a strong Outlaws team who managed to keep the Wolfpack under 300 yards offence for the first time all season. QB Darryl Leason, under constant pressure all night, finished 21 of 39 for 247 yards and 2 TD’s. SB Mike Leason caught both TD’s (10, 8), his only 2 catches of the game. SB Danny Warrack hauled in 3 passes for 86 yards while WR Tim Johnson grabbed 4 passes for 34 yards. The Wolfpack were never able to generate much in the running game being held to 46 yards on 11 carries. RB Hassan Cohen led the effort with 3 carries for 17 yards.

The Wolfpack defence was in tough against a very solid Outlaws running game. DHB Reilly Penner led all players with 7 tackles while LB Jordan Gruman finished with 6 tackles. DE/LB Gunnar Godhe had 4 tackles including 2 for loss and was named the games Defensive MVP. DE Sheldon Southgate & DT Josh Comeau each had 4 tackles.

This brings the curtain down on the 2011 Calgary Wolfpack season. Despite the painful loss to the Outlaws, 2011 must be viewed as a success! We captured our 14th AFL Championship and saw some great individual player performances on the field. Heading into the off-season, we will do what we always do….reload for 2012! The Calgary Wolfpack would like to thank everyone who makes our playing this great game possible. We couldn’t field our team without the awesome support we receive from our fantastic sponsors! Thank you to all our fans for the support you give us no matter where we play! Finally we have to give our heartfelt gratitude to our families who give us their support & blessings to continue to play the game we love! The Wolfpack will be back in 2012! Bigger, stronger, faster than ever!

Wolfpack Claim 14th AFL Title

The Calgary Wolfpack travelled to Grande Prairie Saturday night to battle for the 2011 AFL Championship. The two teams met back in July with the Drillers winning a thrilling 50-49 game! That game helped them remain unbeaten heading into the final. The game was fairly close through the first half with the Wolfpack holding a 15-8 lead at halftime. All season long the Wolfpack has struggled in the 3rd quarter of games….not the case on Saturday night. The Pack dominated the 3rd putting up 17 points while holding the Drillers scoreless. Both teams traded touchdowns in the 4th quarter but the damage had been done and the Wolfpack claimed their 14th AFL Championship with a 38-14 victory!

The Wolfpack offence was balanced and dominated play all night. The Wolfpack put together 175 yards rushing & 3 TD’s led by QB Darryl Leason with 74 yards on 8 carries. RB Sean Ahronson had 14 carries for 61 yards and 1 TD. FB Matt Squires had 5 carries for 11 yards and 2 TD’s. Leason was also efficient through the air finishing 17 of 26 for 247 yards and 2 TD’s. WR Mike Wasylyniuk led all receivers with 5 receptions for 48 yards. RB Sean Ahronson hauled in 3 passes for 35 yards while WR Tim Johnson added 3 catches for 59 yards and 2 TD’s.

The Wolfpack defence was stifling. Leading the assault was DHB Reilly Penner with 6.5 tackles (6 solo, 1 assist, 2 for loss) and 2 knockdowns. LB Jon Scratch contributed 5.5 tackles (5 solo, 1 assist, 1 for loss) and 1 sack. LB Jordan Gruman finished with 4.5 tackles (3 solo, 3 assists, 1 for loss) and 1 sack. DE Jim Chappelle had 2 tackles & recovered a Drillers fumble while LB Gunnar Godhe also had 2 tackles one of which was for a loss. The Pack’s special teams was also impressive as P James Balsdon averaged 47.7 yards on his 3 punts and WR Denver Roy & SB Jesse Krsa led the charge on the coverage teams.

The Calgary Wolfpack will now represent the AFL in the 2011 CMFL Senior National Championship against a familiar foe…the Tri-City Outlaws, 2011 Champions of the NFC. The game will be held at 7:00pm, Saturday September 17, 2011 at Warriors Stadium at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario. The Wolfpack have beaten the Outlaws twice before in the National Championship game (2005 & 2008) but will be taking nothing for granted in their preparations for the big game!

Battle For A Spot In The Final

The Calgary Wolfpack hosted the Lloydminster Vandals on Saturday night in a showdown for a spot in the 2011 AFL Championship game next weekend. In the first half the Wolfpack looked like a well oiled machine with a crisp offence and determined defence leading to a 27-3 halftime lead. When the Wolfpack took the opening drive of the second half down the field to increase the lead to 34-3 most people at Stampeder Field thought the game was over…..except someone forgot to tell the Vandals! From that point on momentum switched around to their favour. The Vandals dominated most of the second half closing the score to 34-26 and having the ball first & ten on the Wolfpack 11 yard line with 3 minutes left in the game. The Wolfpack defence finally came up with the stop they needed when Vandals QB Jared Valleau came up just short on a 3rd down scramble! The Wolfpack offence took over the ball on their own 1 yard line and were able to string together a number of huge first downs to run out the clock and preserve the victory.

The Wolfpack offence had another solid effort racking up 500 yards total. QB Darryl Leason finished the game 28 of 41 for 352 yards, 4 TD and 1 INT. WR Mike Wasylyniuk led all receivers with 131 yards on 6 receptions. SB Mike Leason hauled in 7 passes for 93 yards and WR Tim Johnson added 4 catches for 66 yards. FB Matt Squires, RB Holdyn Lorentz, RB Sean Ahronson and SB Danny Warrack each hauled in a Leason TD pass. Lorentz had a solid game on the ground as well adding 77 yards on 15 carries and 1TD.

The Wolfpack defence came up with the big plays when it needed, forcing 3 Valleau INT’s. LB Jordan Gruman led the team with 9 tackles (7 solo, 4 assists) while LB Jon Scratch added 2.5 tackles (2 solo, 1 assist) and 1 INT. DB Rob Sakires came up with some big tackles (4 solo, 1 assist) as well CB Cameron Todd (3 solo, 1 assist). S Sean Stewart had 3 tackles (2 solo, 2 assists) and 2 big INT’s. DT Josh Comeau chipped in 2 solo tackles, 1 for loss and the Wolfpack’s only sack!

The Wolfpack will now prepare for a much anticipated rematch with the Grande Prairie Drillers in the AFL Championship game. The Wolfpack lost their only game of the season to the Drillers 50-49 just a few weeks ago and are looking for redemption. The Wolfpack will travel to Grande Prairie this weekend where the exact time & location of the game is still to be determined.

Northern Lights

The night sky in Grande Prairie was lit up with fireworks at Legion Field as the 4-0 Wolfpack tangled with the 4-0 Drillers in a battle for sole possession of 1st place in the AFL. Despite the rainy weather & less than perfect field conditions, both offences put on a show. In a back & forth affair the Pack pulled out to a quick 12-0 lead in the 1st quarter only to see the Drillers rally quickly and move ahead 14-12. The 2nd quarter was all Wolfpack driving out to 33-14 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter was the reverse of the 2nd with the Drillers in charge slowly eating into the lead. The finish in the 4th quarter was spectacular with the Drillers getting to within 1 point at 49-48 with 36 seconds to play. In a bold move the Drillers went for 2 points & converted to take the lead 50-49. The Pack wasn’t done though, after a nice Holdyn Lorentz return of the kick-off, QB Darryl Leason hit WR Denver Roy for a 29 yard gain. The Drillers were also assessed a roughing the passer penalty on the play. This set up a game winning 31 yard FG attempt with 5 seconds left that unfortunately sailed wide right and was returned out of the end zone to seal the win for the Drillers.

The Wolfpack piled up 558 yards of offence on the night. RB Holdyn Lorentz, playing his former team for the first time delivered a fantastic performance. Holdyn carried the ball 20 times for 112 yards and 2 TD’s and also caught 3 passes for another 32 yards! FB Matt Squires rumbled for 29 yards and 1 TD while QB Darryl Leason ran for 77 yards on 10 carries and 2 TD’s. Leason also finished 29 of 40 for 340 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s. He used 9 different receivers on the night. Rookie WR Denver Roy had a breakout game with 4 receptions for 93 yards. SB Mike Leason hauled in 4 receptions for 63 yards and 2 TD’s. FB Matt Squires caught 5 passes for 33 yards and 2 point conversions. WR Mike Wasylyniuk also caught 5 passes for 47 yards.

The Wolfpack defence was in tough trying to contain the AFL’s # 1 Offence. LB Jordan Gruman led the team with 9 tackles (7 solo, 4 assists, 1 for loss) while DB Reilly Penner kicked in with 7 solo tackles, 2 INT’s (returned 45 & 14 yards) and 2 knockdowns. LB Jon Scratch added 3 tackles (2 solo, 2 assists) and his first INT of the season. LB Nick Debortoli pitched in with 4 tackles (3 solo, 2 assists) in his first game back from an injury while DE Gunnar Godhe recorded his team leading 3rd sack of the season.

The 4-1 Wolfpack will now get ready to face the 2-3 Calgary Gators. Gametime is 4pm on Saturday July 16, Stampeder Field, Shouldice Park, Calgary.

First Place Showdown

The Calgary Wolfpack rolled into Lloydminster on Saturday to battle the defending AFL Champion Vandals for 1st place. The crowd that braved the damp, cool weather was not to be disappointed as the 2 heavyweights pounded each other all evening. Turnovers and big plays were the order of the day and there were plenty of both. The game was tied 14-14 at the half and it wasn’t until late in the 4th quarter that the Wolfpack was finally able to pull away with a couple of big plays and hold on to win 41-24!

The Wolfpack’s high reward/high risk offence was on display again. QB Darryl Leason finished 27 of 43 for 430yds, 6TD’s and 5 INT’s. SB Mike Leason led the team with 9 receptions for 146yds and 3TD’s. WR Tim Johnson added 7 catches for 123yds and 1 TD. SB Danny Warrack had 5 catches for 79yds, 1 TD while new comer Mike Wasylyniuk contributed 4 receptions for 60yds and a TD! RB Holdyn Lorentz pounded out 80yds on 14 rushing attempts.

The Wolfpack defence was in tough trying to defend reigning AFL MVP Jared Valleau and an excellent Vandal’s offence. Evan Kaluta, making his first start at LB led the team with 7.5 tackles (7 solo, 1 assist) and 1 INT. DHB Reilly Penner added 4.5 tackles (4 solo, 1 assist, 1 for loss), 1 sack and 4 pass knockdowns. LB Jon Scratch added 4 tackles (3 solo, 2 assists, 0.5 for loss) while LB Gunnar Godhe added another 3 solo tackles to his list. S Sean Stewart had 2 tackles (1 solo, 2 assists) and 2 huge INT’s which he returned 23 & 22 yards!

The Wolfpack head into the Canada Day bye week at 4-0 and time to heal some aches & pains. On July 9th the Wolfpack makes the long journey north to Grande Prairie for a showdown with the 4-0 Drillers in what could be a shootout of epic proportions. Kickoff is 7:00pm at Legion Field.

Wolfpack Pounds Out A Win

The Edmonton Renegades came to town on Saturday afternoon. The weather was horrendous with heavy rain and strong winds keeping both teams pretty much limited to a ground game. 2 bone chilling hours later the Wolfpack was able to walk away with a 30-0 victory.

The weather forced the Wolfpack to rely on their ground game and despite 3 fumbles, the team was able to rush for over 260 yards! RB Holdyn Lorentz was brilliant finishing with 18 carries for 170 yards 1TD and 1 FUM. FB Matt Squires banged out 34 yards on 6 carries while SB Danny Warrack piled up 77 yards on only 3 carries! QB Robb Sherman, making his 1st start since 2005 due to the absence of Darryl Leason, proved his leadership skills by moving the offence when needed. Robb finished 8 of 14 for 69 yards and 2 TD’s. WR Tim Johnson caught 4 passes for 37 yards and 1TD, while WR Stephen McLean hauled in his only pass for a 3 yard TD…..his first in over 5 years!

The defence took advantage of the weather and dominated the Renegades. DHB Morgan Willis-Jones led all defenders with 4 tackles (3 solo, 2 assists and 1.5 for loss). DE Evan Kaluta recorded 2 solo tackles, both for loss. DT Josh Comeau added 3 tackles (1 solo, 4 assists and 1 for loss) while Gunnar Godhe, playing LB, pitched in with 3.5 tackles (2 solo, 3 assists and 0.5 for loss). DHB Reilly Penner continued his outstanding rookie campaign with 3 tackles (2 solo, 2 assists and 1 for loss) and a 75 yard INT return TD! S Sean Stewart also had an INT.

The 3-0 Wolfpack will spend the next week getting ready for a first place showdown with the 3-0 Lloydminster Vandals. The game is at 4:00pm, Armstrong Field, Lloydminster.

Wolfpack/Stallions Get Defensive

The Edmonton Stallions came to Calgary on Sunday afternoon in a another chapter of this long rivalry. Right from the start it was clearly a battle of both teams defences. Yards on offence were hard to find and points were even harder. Tied 7-7 at halftime, the Stallions recovered a muffed missed field goal attempt in the end zone to take a 14-7 lead in the 3rd. With some gritty play & timely turnovers, the Pack managed to crawl back on top late in the game and held on for a 21-14 victory.

QB Darryl Leason was 21 of 33 for 243 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT’s. SB Danny Warrack had his second strong game in a row catching 4 passes for 76 yards and 1 TD. WR Tim Johnson led all receivers with 5 receptions for 39 yards. SB Evan Kaluta hauled in 3 passes for 54 yards. Leason led the team in rushing as well with 4 carries for 49 yards including a 21 yard TD in the first quarter. FB Matt Squires had 6 carries for 38 yards and the game winning TD late in the 4th quarter. RB Holdyn Lorentz ran 10 times 34 yards and caught 3 passes for another 15!

The Wolfpack defence played brilliantly all game thwarting the Stallions offence at every turn. LB Jordan Gruman (3 solo, 5 assists, 1.5 for loss) and DE Gunnar Godhe (3 solo, 3 assists) again led the charge. DE Jim Chappelle contributed 2 solo, 2 assists and 1.5 for loss including 1 sack. LB Jon Scratch was solid with 3 solo and 3 assisted tackles. Our 2 rookie DHB’s continued to impress, Morgan Willis-Jones had 2 tackles and 1 INT while Reilly Penner added 4 tackles, 2 for loss and 2 INT’s.

The Wolfpack will finish our 3 game home stand on Saturday June 18, 2011 at 4:00pm Stampeder Field when the 0-2 Edmonton Renegades come to town.

The Pack Survives Pirate Assault

The 2011 AFL season kicked off on Saturday when the Central Alberta Buccaneers swept into Calgary to tangle with the Wolfpack. Right from the start it was apparent that neither side was too interested in playing any lock down defence. Scoring came in bunches by both sides. Big plays & long drives were the order of the day but in the end the Buccaneers ran out of time & luck and the Pack held on for a 49 – 42 win!

The Wolfpack offence rolled up over 570 yards during the game. QB Darryl Leason finished 28 of 42 for 425 yards and 6 TD’s while adding another 37 yards rushing. SB Mike Leason caught 8 passes for 138 yards and 1 TD. SB Evan Kaluta caught 5 passes for 53 yards and 3TD’s. SB Danny Warrack hauled in 4 passes for 141 yards. FB Matt Squires led all Wolfpack rushers with 38 yards on 5 carries and also caught 4 passes for 16 yards and 1 TD. 2010 Wolfpack Outstanding Player: Offence RB Mike Fedyniak ran for 27 yards on 5 carries and 1 TD and also caught a 7 yard TD pass. Former Grande Prairie Driller RB Holdyn Lorentz had a big day as well rushing for 21 yards on 5 carries and 4 kickoff returns for 128 yards!

The defence, despite giving up 42 points, did feature some great performances. LB Jordan Gruman led the team with 9.5 tackles (9 solo, 1 assist, 1 for loss), while DE Gunnar Godhe had a monster game with 8 solo tackles, 4 of them for loss and 2 sacks! S Sean Stewart pitched in with 2.5 tackles (2 solo, 1 assist) and 1 INT. DB Rob Sakires also had an INT with an electric 56 yard return.
