Q. When are the games played? What nights, and at what time?
A. Usually Boys play on Monday/Wednesday, and Girls on Tuesday/Thursday.
Genesee (GYSL), sometimes has older ages playing on Fridays & Sundays, because of the lack of available fields. SouthWest (SWISL) plays games with a 6:00 PM or 7:15 PM kick-off, while most GYSL games start at 6:30 PM.
Q. What are the age brackets for the teams?
A. It varies a little depending on the league.
SWISL ages are U7/U8 , U9/U10, U11/U12, U13/U14/U15 (together), and U16/U17/U18 & U19 (together -- but the U19's must still be in high school).
GYSL brackets are U11/U12, U13/U14, U15/U16, U17/U18/U19 (and the U19's may be in school, or not).
Q. Why are the teams not organized by school grade level? My child isn't on the same team as her classmate who is only 2 months older?
A. US Youth Soccer, & NYS West, our governing organizations, conform to the international(FIFA) soccer age categories. However, the worldwide 'Soccer Year'; August 1st through July 31st, has no relation to school grade. For example, a 5th Grader, born in Sept.1996, is a "10 year and under (U10)" player. Her 5th Grade classmate, born in July 1996, is a U11 player, and would play with other 11's and 12 yr. olds. At registration, an 'age matrix' will be provided to help you place your child in the right age bracket.
Q. Can a player play 'down' an age bracket? Can my U11 son play with his buddies who are in the U10 bracket?
A. The rule is, no, he may not.
Q. My daughter wants to play on a team with her older friends -- she's big, and a better player than the younger girls - can she play 'up' an age level?
A. Perhaps - it's a decision of the coaches involved, with the approval of the club's executive board. You must put your request in writing, on paper, when you submit the registration form.
Q. What's "Travel" soccer? How far away do we have to drive, anyway?
A. "Travel" is really a slang term which means a team that is selected, usually by tryouts, and a team which plays its best players most of the time - not always everyone, and some players not very much - because their objective is to WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP of the "Travel" league. Most Caledonia teams play in Recreation leagues; where everyone is placed on a team, everyone plays in every game, and the league does not crown Champions -- maybe doesn't even keep standings. 'Rec' league U8's & U10's, don't officially keep score.
However, to make a league, we have to go out of town -- the U8's journey as far as Churchville, the oldest teams may travel to Medina, Attica, or Irondequoit.
Q. What does the registration fee cover? Will there be extra expenses?
A. The club does not provide required shinguards. The fee ($75) for 2007, covers a mandatory supplemental insurance fee, ($7.50), a full uniform, a portion of referee fees, and a tournament fee, equipment, & field maintenance. The $40 fee for U8's is lower because no shorts are provided with the uniform, no tournament is included, and the referee fees and equipment costs are less. An extra expense might be an additional tournament entry fee, or another team event, with costs split among players.
Q. There is a discount for families registering 3 or more players -- how does that work?
A. The discount applies to the 3rd (or 4th) and youngest. The older two would pay the full fee ($75, or $40 for U8) . The third would pay 1/2 the full fee ($38 or $20). If any had participated in a Fall 2006 program, or Indoor, their insurance would be already paid, and their balances for the year would be reduced by $7 . So the first two would owe $68, or $33 (U8) and the 3rd would owe $31 or $13 (U8).
