Herd Lacrosse runs by rival Trojans
By Jeffrey Kauffman, Sentinel Reporter, April 22, 2009

Letdown is a concern for any coach after a big win over your rival but the Thundering Herd never let that word come into play as they walloped Chambersburg 9-2 Tuesday at the rainy and swampy Band Field at Carlisle.

Carlisle (4-2 Mid-Penn, 8-4 overall) scored the opening goal by Tyler Getz and never trailed in the contest as Elliot Metzger tallied a hat trick in the victory.

The Herd defense, led by Richard Bullis but helped by Joel Miller and Brewster Tisson and anchored by goalie Chris Dymski shut down the attack of Chambersburg just three days after shutting down the Cumberland Valley offense.

“We put Richard Bullis on the best player and he has shut them down consistently,” Herd assistant coach Rob Stewart said. “Joel Miller and Brewster Tisson have played very good defense and Chris Dymski has played well in the goal. They have played very well together. The three defenders are seniors but have played together. The midfield has been playing better, especially in man down situations. Sean Kunst and Amer Todorovac have solidified that attack.” Stewart is in charge of the Herd goalies and the defense.

Carlisle outshot the Trojans 54-18 and the final score could have been much worse if not for the superb effort of defender Mitch Rotz and keeper Dan Gadlasky. He totaled 18 saves in the game and stopped some solid Herd shots through screens and on the slick turf.

Metzger extended the Herd lead with a wicked rip from the left wing at an odd angle. Moments later, Dan Bolan added to the lead with a goal in traffic.

Chambersburg (4-3 Mid Penn, 6-4 overall) scored as Corey Boushell finally found some room to move on a break and slipped one past Dymski.

Mark Blashford responded quickly as he took a feed from Jordan Wenger and shot as he was leveled to the turf and the ball skipped past Gadlasky for the fourth goal.

Loren Schaffer took a dish from Boushell to half the margin but Robert Gilroy extended the lead back to three on a score off a scramble in front of the net.

Carlisle talled all four goals in the final quarter as Metzger scored twice and Blashford added another goal. Getz added his second goal of the contest.

Metzger’s final goal for the hat trick came off a pass from behind the net from Kunst. He headed to the goal and forced Gadlasky to commit low and he flipped it past the keeper on the high side.

“The difference tonight was we took a lot of shots and we possessed the ball. This was one more notch because we have to win out for the playoffs. Their goalie played a great game,” added Stewart.

“We can’t afford to slip up,” Herd coach Steve Kidder added. “We slipped up after Warwick. Friday-Monday was amen corner for us”

The Herd travels to Central Dauphin East on Wednesday and travels to Hempfield Friday.
