High school lacrosse: Herd finds offense in win over Spartans
By Jeffrey Kauffman, April 25, 2007
The Carlisle boys lacrosse relied on their foundation to defeat the Harrisburg Academy Spartans 10-2 Tuesday night at Carlisle High School.

Having lost most of their offense to graduation last year and with several other players sitting out this game due to injuries, or other various off the field incidents, junior Colin Shevlin sparked the offense scoring five goals and adding two assists to lead the Herd attack. Tim Margeson added three goals and two assists in a supporting role.

“It is alot of pressure because those guys were great, but we all have to step it up. We know we can win and we just have to play our positions and play smart,” said Shevlin.

Senior keeper Andrew Dymski played a key role in the Herd victory. Supported by a strong defense which allowed him to clearly see the shots, Dymski stepped up his game once again. He has consistently allowed few goals. The Herd defense has allowed only 34 goals in eight contests, an average of only four goals per game.

“Our offense has really stepped it up. The improvement between last year and this year in Colin is night and day. I have to give props to our offense. The defense played good today. The defense is awesome. They are the greatest guys in the world. As a goalie they give me the shots that I can save. I am nothing without them in front of me,” said Dymski.

Justin Malenich, Jordan Kepner, and Richard Bullis provided the critical positioning and control the middle of the crease by knocking players out of the way so Dymski could see the shots. That defense is not afraid to take or give any punishment, but are also skilled enough to run the ball up the field to start the offensive thrust. John Agolia, Casey Wagner and Dylan Small provided some defensive pressure to aid Dymski as well.

“We have alot of guys with a great field sense, like Richard Bullis. He's young and playing well and has a strong sense of the game. We are very young and we do have some senior leadership and obviously that is carrying us a little bit. We are coming together as a team. We are starting to look good,” said Kepner.

The offensive crew of Margeson, Shevlin, Sean Kuntz, Nate Bussard, Mike Thompson, Rob Wrightstone and Jordan Wenger worked the ball around the perimeter and looking for good shots.

“I had to get on the guys about some of the mental errors that we made against Lower Dauphin the other night and they responded tonight. said first-year head coach Steve Kidder. “ We cut those down. I'm happy with them. We had a rash of injuries and I had a group of kids who stepped up. I brought a whole line up from the jayvees and they played well.”

Harrisburg Academy continually gave the Herd power plays opportunities. Even though the Herd only scored on one of them, they had the chance to work the ball around and take advantage of their passing game.

Margeson tallied two goals for the Herd in the first quarter while the defense held the Spartans scoreless.

Carlisle took advantage of a man break as Sean Kuntz raced down the field and flipped the ball to Margeson who found Shevlin on the doorstep for the score.

Josh Robbins scored for the Spartans to end the shutout at the 10:22 mark of the second quarter. Robbins added a goal approximately the same time in the third quarter, but that would be the extent of the offense for Harrisburg Academy.

Nate Bussard assisted on two goals by Margeson and Shevlin in the second half and freshman Chris Porter scored his first varsity point as he found Shevlin for the 9th goal. Rob Wrightstone found the net for the second time in the final two minutes for the final outcome.

“We have a better team than we showed tonight,” said Harrisburg Academy coach Matt O'Bannion.

Carlisle hosts Hempfield Friday night at Carlisle. Varsity start is 6 p.m.
