Carlisle drops CV in Mid-Penn lacrosse semifinals
The first three and one-half minutes of Tuesday’s Mid-Penn boys’ lacrosse semifinal at Biddle Field served as a perfect snapshot of the fate that laid ahead for the Cumberland Valley Eagles.
CV won the opening face-off, but spent the next 3:25 passing around the Carlisle defensive zone, searching for an open shot. What they ended up with was a shot wide of the net and a headache.
The Thundering Herd defense didn’t let up throughout, forcing the Eagles into bad passes and limiting them to just 10 total shots in Carlisle’s 8-3 victory. The Thundering Herd (14-5) advances to the Mid-Penn finals, where they will face unbeaten Hershey — an 11-4 winner over Northern — on Thursday at Central Dauphin East High School at 4:15 p.m.
“(The Eagles) were working for a good shot,” Carlisle head coach Steve Kidder said. “I’m sure they didn’t want to take a poor shot. Our goalie’s pretty good and they knew if they were going to take bad ones, it probably wouldn’t pay off for them.
“Where we tightened up really well on them was, they couldn’t pass through our defense. Our sticks were up to the inside, knocking down anything that tried to go through the heart of our defense. And when you play like that, you’re tough to beat.”
Cumberland Valley fell behind 2-1 in the first half and, despite the deficit, couldn’t muster a rally in the third quarter. Instead, the Thundering Herd held the Eagles to just three shots in that quarter, with one sailing wide and two saved by keeper Chris Dymski.
Carlisle midfielder Sean Kunst was the driving force behind a decidedly more physical Thundering Herd side, scoring the game’s first goal 4:25 into the first quarter by simply rushing through the heart of the CV defense and sinking a point-blank shot.
He did it again in the third quarter, this time faking a shot outside before breaking right through the Eagles interior defense.
“I beat their guy and they didn’t get a real good slide on me,” Kunst said. “They’re kind of hesitant, and when they do come out they don’t body up, they just throw a stick so I can just tuck it and go around for the goal.
“The first time we played them I saw that, too ... they don’t body up well, they just go for stick.”
Kunst’s second goal came shortly before a much-needed Carlisle scoring spree.
Thundering Herd attacker Rob Gilroy provided his team with a one-goal halftime advantage when he intercepted a high pass roughly 30 yards out from the CV goal before dropping a close shot into the net past Eagles goalkeeper Kenny Milburn. However, given Carlisle’s 10 shots on goal through the first half, Kidder needed his offense to turn its hard work into points.
“That’s what we talked about at halftime,” Kidder said. “I said, ‘Guys, if we can put three quickies into the cage, we can mentally separate from this team.’”
With just under four minutes left in the third quarter, the barrage of shots laid down on Milburn finally started to pay off for the Herd. Jordan Wenger, Cory Hartung and Gilroy each scored goals for Carlisle in a two-minute span, providing those three quickies needed to essentially wrap up the victory.
“Playing any team, (a 2-1 lead at halftime) is not a big lead,” Kunst said. “Especially against CV, they can come back, get a quick three (goals) and we’re down. Coach gave us a little speech, we got pumped up and came out, ran our offense, played awesome defense.”
Paul Miranda provided the Eagles with their only significant punch on offense. While the majority of the CV offense struggled to find open shots, Miranda sank two on high frozen-rope throws, each from 15 yards out. His first goal tied the game up, 1-1, in the first quarter.
Milburn kept his team in contention, saving eight of 10 shots on goal through the opening half, but the Eagles just couldn’t keep up with a more physical Carlisle side that totaled 18 shots on goal.
The victory gives the Thundering Herd another shot at Hershey — a team that pounded them 13-4 this season and is undefeated through 19 contests. However, Kunst feels he and his teammates are more prepared this time around.
“This is the best game we’ve played all season, we put in a couple goals then just kept pounding away,” Kunst said.
The Thundering Herd will enter the Mid-Penn final as a heavy underdog. According to laxpower.com’s computer ratings, the Trojans were the No. 155 team in the nation heading into Tuesday’s semifinal. Carlisle was ranked No. 689.
