The Rhode Island state champions turned in a pair of very strong performances and finished in second place in both the 18 & Under Advanced and 14 & Under Advanced divisions at the 2006 USTA New England Junior Team Tennis Sectional Championships held in West Hartford. It is the best showing for two Ocean State teams in the Advanced Division in the seven-year history of the New England junior team sectionals.
The Edgewood Tennis & Swim Club of Raynham, Mass., champions of the USTA Rhode Island 18 & Under Tournament, ended Slater Memorial Park of Pawtuckets six-year reign as Ocean State champions but could not stop the Cedardale Club of Haverhill, Mass. from capturing a sixth consecutive New England 18 Advanced title at Conard High School.
Edgewood, coached by Filipe Miguel, the mens and womens tennis coach at Bridgewater State College, placed second to Cedardale, 227 to 207 points. Edgewood did finish 34 points ahead of the third place team, Longmeadow, from Western Massachusetts.
