2006 USTA New England
Junior Team Tennis Sectional Championships

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Rhode Island state champions turned in a pair of very strong performances and finished in second place in both the 18 & Under Advanced and 14 & Under Advanced divisions at the 2006 USTA New England Junior Team Tennis Sectional Championships held in West Hartford. It is the best showing for two Ocean State teams in the Advanced Division in the seven-year history of the New England junior team sectionals.

The Edgewood Tennis & Swim Club of Raynham, Mass., champions of the USTA Rhode Island 18 & Under Tournament, ended Slater Memorial Park of Pawtucket’s six-year reign as Ocean State champions but could not stop the Cedardale Club of Haverhill, Mass. from capturing a sixth consecutive New England 18 Advanced title at Conard High School.

Edgewood, coached by Filipe Miguel, the men’s and women’s tennis coach at Bridgewater State College, placed second to Cedardale, 227 to 207 points. Edgewood did finish 34 points ahead of the third place team, Longmeadow, from Western Massachusetts.

Andrew Bumila (Raynham) was a standout in the boys singles, winning five of six individual matches. Amy Lopes (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jackie McGuirk (Raynham) turned in strong performances splitting the girls singles duties. Regis Chang (Mattapoisett, Mass.), Charles Kurgatt (Fall River, Mass.), Daniel Caticha (Taunton, Mass./Wheeler School, Providence), Devin Kitterick (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Nick Almeida (Raynham) were success playing boys singles and mixed doubles. Sangita Murali (Dartmouth, Mass.), Stephanie Crovello (Raynham) and Carolina Gonzalez (Bridgewater) earned valuable points in the girls doubles and the mixed doubles.

The Aquidneck Island Community Tennis 14 & Under Advanced Team entered their championships at William Hall High School without two key girls players but still managed to hold off Bloomfield of Connecticut by a one-game margin to finish in second place. Team Carrington from Hampshire College in Western Mass. placed first with 229 games, followed by Aquidneck Island with 181 and Bloomfield with 180.

Aquidneck Island, coached by Mario Llano of Mario’s School of Tennis, had won 22 of a possible 25 individual matches in a round robin to capture the 2006 USTA Rhode Island 14 & Under State Championship. The Aquidneck Island team includes Nick Carter (Portsmouth), Evan Chomka (Warwick), Jared Donaldson (Chepachet), Elizabeth Erickson (Barrington), Jesse Frieder (Providence), Alex Geremia (Wakefield), Kate Gilligan (Wakefield), Stephanie Kurgatt (Fall River, Mass.) and Tara Prasad (Lincoln). Geremia and Prasad were unable to compete in West Hartford, and Anna Caticha and Jody Greenlaw were able to step in and keep the team near the top of the sectional standings.

MACKSOUD WINS JTT ORGANIZER OF YEAR AWARD

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Joanne Macksoud may not put forth effort and passion to make USTA New England’s Jr. Team Tennis programs a success to win praise from others, but she’s getting it, anyway.

Macksoud, president of the Blackstone Valley Community Tennis Association, has been named USTA New England’s 2007 Section Organizer Award for JTT.

“When I started the league eight years ago, I was just hoping to give some high school kids the chance to play a little more tennis,” Macksoud recalled. “Then it started to get a little bigger. I owe a lot to Doug Chapman [USTA NE Community Coordinator] for helping this grow. This year, I looked out on the courts and saw more than 120 kids playing tennis and I realized how much the league had grown since we started. I’d say that was one of the most rewarding days of my life.”

With the sectional honor, Macksoud becomes a finalist for the USTA’s prestigious Janet Louer National Organizer of the Year Award.

“Joanne is certainly deserving of this award, and what makes her and her CTA successful is the fact that she isn’t driven by recognition,” said Deirdre Tindall, USTA New England’s Director of Community Tennis. “To be as dedicated as she is to Jr. Team Tennis takes a lot of sacrifice and her selfness actions over the years have benefited countless numbers of kids, which I’m certain is reward enough for her.”

The Janet Louer National Organizer of the Year Award is presented to an individual who delivers USTA Jr. Team Tennis to their community and embodies the true meaning of having a positive impact on children.

The award is named after Janet Louer, an individual who was instrumental in the development of junior tennis during her lifetime. As the administrator for USTA Jr. Team Tennis in Georgia, she built the state championships into the largest youth team tennis state championships in the nation. Her expertise also was utilized in the development of the Section and National Championships for the program.

Macksoud has been the area league coordinator throughout the eight-year history of the league.

The Blackstone Valley CTA was the 2006 USTA New England CTA of the Year, thanks to its involvement in several key programs aimed at area youths.

No schedule is the best schedule.

We know what it’s like. You’ve got a big-time passion for tennis, but you’ve got little time for yourself. Every week, you’re pulled in so many different directions that you sometimes need a GPS system just to find your way back home. Sure, you’d love to make tennis a regular part of your life, but let’s face it, there’s nothing regular about your life. Maybe you’ve thought about playing league tennis many times, but since you can’t commit to a regular day and time, you obviously can’t play in a league.

You call the shots.

Ladders are designed with your busy schedule in mind. You make the schedule. You set the time. You play when it’s convenient for you. Ladders provide all the thrills of league tennis, built around your busy lifestyle. With Flex Leagues (Ladder), you can control everything—with the possible exception of your opponent’s down-the-line forehand.

Flex Leagues have arrived in Rhode Island!

USTA New England Honors 2006 Award Recipients at Annual Awards Ceremony

1/25/07 2:28 PM

USTA New England today announced that it will recognize 28 individuals and six organizations that have made positive contributions to tennis in New England in 2006 at its annual awards ceremony being held Saturday, March 3, 2007, at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Marlborough, Mass. USTA New England’s annual awards ceremony is sponsored by T. Rowe Price.

Award recipients represent each area of the six-state New England region, which collectively comprise the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) New England section. An active awards committee made up of six volunteers chose this year’s award winners – with input from the USTA New England staff – from nominations that were submitted in each award category throughout 2006. A list of the award recipients with location information appears below.

“Our annual awards luncheon gives us the opportunity to recognize the outstanding contributions of those individuals and organizations that exemplify the best of tennis in New England,” said Jeff Waters, USTA New England Executive Director. “The award recipients represent a dedicated and passionate group of people and organizations that we are proud to honor.”

One award that carries special significance is the Gardner Ward Chase Memorial Award, which is given to an individual for his or her outstanding lifetime contribution to tennis in New England. The award will be officially presented to 2006 recipient Richard Mount from Chestnut Hill, Mass., at USTA New England’s annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 9, 2007, at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.
