  Sat 8/9/08 1pm - 3pm Sirens 4 Norhern Lights 2 August 9, 2008 Sirens Double Up Northern Lights Sirens 4 Northern Lights 2 The Brandon United Sirens were on home turf at Optimist Park to take on the visiting Northern Lights Nitro today. The rivalry between these two teams has been building for 4 years now and the games never fail to be exciting. Northern Lights went ahead in the 22nd minute against the run of play. Brittany 'Steamin'' Heaman levelled the score with a display of speed and skill. Picking the ball up 40 yards from goal, Brit touched it past the right back, ran around her and the central defender taking the angle on her and blew it by the keeper on the near side--- beautiful. Ashlea 'The Earl Girl' deposited a corner kick directly into the goal off a NL defender with seconds remaining in the first half to give the Sirens the lead they deserved at the break. Northern Lights struck again to draw even early in the second half and Hattie 'Stonewall' Melvin was called upon to make some key saves in the ten or so minutes after that to keep the Lights from going ahead. Two more goals off of corner kicks put the game away for the Sirens as Breezy and Shady both won goalmouth scrambles off of corners and deposited them behind the NL keeper. Some excellent ball movement was on display all game, with good support from the back four and defensive mids. Good possession passing with 'give and goes' and wall passing had Northern Lights chasing the ball most of the game. The work you girls have been doing in practice is really starting to show.   Sun 7/6/08 5pm Sirens 3 Portage Trail 3 Sirens Battle Back Sirens 3 Portage Trail 3 Portage Trail thought the Brandon United Sirens were dead and buried. They were down 3-0 on 3 goals in 20 minutes to open the second half after a scoreless first half. Cue the comeback. All the Sirens needed was for the door to open a crack and they kicked it down. Breezy Thompson cooly converted a penalty kick on a Portage Trail handball to pull the score back to 3-1. Next, Ashlea 'The Earl Girl' deposited a free kick off the keeper's fingertips into the corner on the far post from 25 yards out. With the final seconds ticking away, Shay 'It's My Birthday' Wlock took a quick throwin, which was passed back (I'm sorry--I can't remember who passed it back--I was too excited) and Ash slotted it through a mass of players into the bottom left corner to bring the Sirens all the way back. While the Sirens were clawing their way back into the game, Hattie 'Stonewall' Melvin was making more key saves that kept us in the game. Some excellent possession passing was on display. We are improving but we need to be more consistant here. The Sirens could have called it quits down 3-0 but showed great character in fighting back and never giving up. An excellent team effort.
